    Robust model predictive kinematic tracking control with terminal region for wheeled robotic systems

    This paper addresses the nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) for wheeled mobile robots (WMRs) under external disturbance. The decoupling technique is utilized based on the non-holonomic constraint description for separating the WMR model. This method is able to achieve the under-actuated kinematic sub-system without disturbance and fully-actuated dynamic sub-system in presence of disturbance. Thanks to the decoupling technique, the disturbance is lumped into dynamic sub-system. The novelty lies in that the MPC-based tracking control with fixed initial point guarantees the stability based on a new establishment of terminal region and equivalent terminal controller. The feasibility problem is demonstrated to lead the tracking problem using theoretical analysis. Moreover, the control structure is inserted more the robust nonlinear dynamic controller. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed control scheme are verified by numerical simulations using Yamip tool

    State-Dependent Dynamic Tube MPC: A Novel Tube MPC Method with a Fuzzy Model of Disturbances

    Most real-world systems are affected by external disturbances, which may be impossible or costly to measure. For instance, when autonomous robots move in dusty environments, the perception of their sensors is disturbed. Moreover, uneven terrains can cause ground robots to deviate from their planned trajectories. Thus, learning the external disturbances and incorporating this knowledge into the future predictions in decision-making can significantly contribute to improved performance. Our core idea is to learn the external disturbances that vary with the states of the system, and to incorporate this knowledge into a novel formulation for robust tube model predictive control (TMPC). Robust TMPC provides robustness to bounded disturbances considering the known (fixed) upper bound of the disturbances, but it does not consider the dynamics of the disturbances. This can lead to highly conservative solutions. We propose a new dynamic version of robust TMPC (with proven robust stability), called state-dependent dynamic TMPC (SDD-TMPC), which incorporates the dynamics of the disturbances into the decision-making of TMPC. In order to learn the dynamics of the disturbances as a function of the system states, a fuzzy model is proposed. We compare the performance of SDD-TMPC, MPC, and TMPC via simulations, in designed search-and-rescue scenarios.     Design, testing and validation of model predictive control for an unmanned ground vehicle

    The rapid increase in designing, manufacturing, and using autonomous robots has attracted numerous researchers and industries in recent decades. The logical motivation behind this interest is the wide range of applications. For instance, perimeter surveillance, search and rescue missions, agriculture, and construction. In this thesis, motion planning and control based on model predictive control (MPC) for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) is tackled. In addition, different variants of MPC are designed, analysed, and implemented for such non-holonomic systems. It is imperative to focus on the ability of MPC to handle constraints as one of the motivations. Furthermore, the proliferation of computer processing enables these systems to work in a real-time scenario. The controller's responsibility is to guarantee an accurate trajectory tracking process to deal with other specifications usually not considered or solved by the planner. However, the separation between planner and controller is not necessarily defined uniquely, even though it can be a hybrid process, as seen in part of this thesis. Firstly, a robust MPC is designed and implemented for a small-scale autonomous bulldozer in the presence of uncertainties, which uses an optimal control action and a feed-forward controller to suppress these uncertainties. More precisely, a linearised variant of MPC is deployed to solve the trajectory tracking problem of the vehicle. Afterwards, a nonlinear MPC is designed and implemented to solve the path-following problem of the UGV for masonry in a construction context, where longitudinal velocity and yaw rate are employed as control inputs to the platform. For both the control techniques, several experiments are performed to validate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed scheme. Those experiments are performed under realistic localisation accuracy, provided by a typical localiser. Most conspicuously, a novel proximal planning and control strategy is implemented in the presence of skid-slip and dynamic and static collision avoidance for the posture control and tracking control problems. The ability to operate in moving objects is critical for UGVs to function well. The approach offers specific planning capabilities, able to deal at high frequency with context characteristics, which the higher-level planner may not well solve. Those context characteristics are related to dynamic objects and other terrain details detected by the platform's onboard perception capabilities. In the control context, proximal and interior-point optimisation methods are used for MPC. Relevant attention is given to the processing time required by the MPC process to obtain the control actions at each actual control time. This concern is due to the need to optimise each control action, which must be calculated and applied in real-time. Because the length of a prediction horizon is critical in practical applications, it is worth looking into in further detail. In another study, the accuracies of robust and nonlinear model predictive controllers are compared. Finally, a hybrid controller is proposed and implemented. This approach exploits the availability of a simplified cost-to-go function (which is provided by a higher-level planner); thus, the hybrid approach fuses, in real-time, the nominal CTG function (nominal terrain map) with the rest of the critical constraints, which the planner usually ignores. The conducted research fills necessary gaps in the application areas of MPC and UGVs. Both theoretical and practical contributions have been made in this thesis. Moreover, extensive simulations and experiments are performed to test and verify the working of MPC with a reasonable processing capability of the onboard process

    A comprehensive performance evaluation of different mobile manipulators used as displaceable 3D printers of building elements for the construction industry

    The construction industry is currently technologically challenged to incorporate new developments for enhancing the process, such as the use of 3D printing for complex building structures,which is the aim of this brief. To do so, we show a systematic study regarding the usability and performance of mobile manipulators as displaceable 3D printing machinery in construction sites,with emphasis on the three main different existing mobile platforms: the car-like, the unicycleand the omnidirectional (mecanum wheeled), with an UR5 manipulator on them. To evaluate its performance, we propose the printing of the following building elements: helical, square, circular and mesh, with different sizes. As metrics, we consider the total control effort observed in the robots and the total tracking error associated with the energy consumed in the activity to get a more sustainable process. In addition, to further test our work, we constrained the robot workspace thus resemblingreal life construction sites. In general, the statistical results show that the omnidirectional platform presents the best results –lowest tracking error and lowest control effort– for circular, helicoidal and mesh building elements; and car-like platform shows the best results for square-like building element.     Robust Stabilization of a Wheeled Mobile Robot Using Model Predictive Control Based on Neurodynamics Optimization

    In this paper, a robust model predictive control (MPC) scheme using neural network based optimization has been developed to stabilize a physically constrained mobile robot. By applying a state scaling transformation, the intrinsic controllability of a mobile robots can be regained by incorporation into the control input with an additional exponential decaying term. An MPC based control method is then designed for the robot in the presence of external disturbances. The MPC optimization has been formulated as a convex nonlinear minimization problem and a primal-dual neural network (PDNN) is adopted to solve this optimization problem over a finite receding horizon. The computational efficiency of MPC has been significantly improved by the proposed neuro-dynamic approach. Experimental studies under various dynamic conditions have been performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach, which can be applied for a large range of wheeled mobile robots
