Robust Joint Image Reconstruction from Color and Monochrome Cameras
International audienceRecent years have seen an explosion of the number of camera modules integratedinto individual consumer mobile devices, including configurations that contain multi-ple different types of image sensors. One popular configuration is to combine an RGBcamera for color imaging with a monochrome camera that has improved performancein low-light settings, as well as some sensitivity in the infrared. In this work we in-troduce a method to combine simultaneously captured images from such a two-camerastereo system to generate a high-quality, noise reduced color image. To do so, pixel-to-pixel alignment has to be constructed between the two captured monochrome and colorimages, which however, is prone to artifacts due to parallax. The joint image recon-struction is made robust by introducing a novel artifact-robust optimization formulation.We provide extensive experimental results based on the two-camera configuration of a commercially available cell phone
Kinect Range Sensing: Structured-Light versus Time-of-Flight Kinect
Recently, the new Kinect One has been issued by Microsoft, providing the next
generation of real-time range sensing devices based on the Time-of-Flight (ToF)
principle. As the first Kinect version was using a structured light approach,
one would expect various differences in the characteristics of the range data
delivered by both devices. This paper presents a detailed and in-depth
comparison between both devices. In order to conduct the comparison, we propose
a framework of seven different experimental setups, which is a generic basis
for evaluating range cameras such as Kinect. The experiments have been designed
with the goal to capture individual effects of the Kinect devices as isolatedly
as possible and in a way, that they can also be adopted, in order to apply them
to any other range sensing device. The overall goal of this paper is to provide
a solid insight into the pros and cons of either device. Thus, scientists that
are interested in using Kinect range sensing cameras in their specific
application scenario can directly assess the expected, specific benefits and

Detection of leaf structures in close-range hyperspectral images using morphological fusion
Close-range hyperspectral images are a promising source of information in plant biology, in particular, for in vivo study of physiological changes. In this study, we investigate how data fusion can improve the detection of leaf elements by combining pixel reflectance and morphological information. The detection of image regions associated to the leaf structures is the first step toward quantitative analysis on the physical effects that genetic manipulation, disease infections, and environmental conditions have in plants. We tested our fusion approach on Musa acuminata (banana) leaf images and compared its discriminant capability to similar techniques used in remote sensing. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of our fusion approach, with significant improvements over some conventional methods
Polarimetric Multi-View Inverse Rendering
A polarization camera has great potential for 3D reconstruction since the
angle of polarization (AoP) of reflected light is related to an object's
surface normal. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D reconstruction method
called Polarimetric Multi-View Inverse Rendering (Polarimetric MVIR) that
effectively exploits geometric, photometric, and polarimetric cues extracted
from input multi-view color polarization images. We first estimate camera poses
and an initial 3D model by geometric reconstruction with a standard
structure-from-motion and multi-view stereo pipeline. We then refine the
initial model by optimizing photometric and polarimetric rendering errors using
multi-view RGB and AoP images, where we propose a novel polarimetric rendering
cost function that enables us to effectively constrain each estimated surface
vertex's normal while considering four possible ambiguous azimuth angles
revealed from the AoP measurement. Experimental results using both synthetic
and real data demonstrate that our Polarimetric MVIR can reconstruct a detailed
3D shape without assuming a specific polarized reflection depending on the
