    Robust Distributed Control Protocols for Large Vehicular Platoons with Prescribed Transient and Steady State Performance

    In this paper, we study the longitudinal control problem for a platoon of vehicles with unknown nonlinear dynamics under both the predecessor-following and the bidirectional control architectures. The proposed control protocols are fully distributed in the sense that each vehicle utilizes feedback from its relative position with respect to its preceding and following vehicles as well as its own velocity, which can all be easily obtained by onboard sensors. Moreover, no previous knowledge of model nonlinearities/disturbances is incorporated in the control design, enhancing in that way the robustness of the overall closed loop system against model imperfections. Additionally, certain designer-specified performance functions determine the transient and steady-state response, thus preventing connectivity breaks due to sensor limitations as well as inter-vehicular collisions.     Provably safe cruise control of vehicular platoons

    We synthesize performance-aware safe cruise control policies for longitudinal motion of platoons of autonomous vehicles. Using set-invariance theories, we guarantee infinite-time collision avoidance in the presence of bounded additive disturbances, while ensuring that the length and the cruise speed of the platoon are bounded within specified ranges. We propose: 1) a centralized control policy and 2) a distributed control policy, where each vehicle's control decision depends solely on its relative kinematics with respect to the platoon leader.     Event-Triggered Multi-Lane Fusion Control for 2-D Vehicle Platoon Systems with Distance Constraints

    This paper investigates the event-triggered fixedtime multi-lane fusion control for vehicle platoon systems with distance keeping constraints where the vehicles are spread in multiple lanes. To realize the fusion of vehicles in different lanes, the vehicle platoon systems are firstly constructed with respect to a two-dimensional (2-D) plane. In case of the collision and loss of effective communication, the distance constraints for each vehicle are guaranteed by a barrier function-based control strategy. In contrast to the existing results regarding the command filter techniques, the proposed distance keeping controller can constrain the distance tracking error directly and the error generated by the command filter is coped with by adaptive fuzzy control technique. Moreover, to offset the impacts of the unknown system dynamics and the external disturbances, an unknown input reconstruction method with asymptotic convergence is developed by utilizing the interval observer technique. Finally, two relative threshold triggering mechanisms are utilized in the proposed fixed-time multi-lane fusion controller design so as to reduce the communication burden.     Cooperative control of autonomous connected vehicles from a Networked Control perspective: Theory and experimental validation

    Formation control of autonomous connected vehicles is one of the typical problems addressed in the general context of networked control systems. By leveraging this paradigm, a platoon composed by multiple connected and automated vehicles is represented as one-dimensional network of dynamical agents, in which each agent only uses its neighboring information to locally control its motion, while it aims to achieve certain global coordination with all other agents. Within this theoretical framework, control algorithms are traditionally designed based on an implicit assumption of unlimited bandwidth and perfect communication environments. However, in practice, wireless communication networks, enabling the cooperative driving applications, introduce unavoidable communication impairments such as transmission delay and packet losses that strongly affect the performances of cooperative driving. Moreover, in addition to this problem, wireless communication networks can suffer different security threats. The challenge in the control field is hence to design cooperative control algorithms that are robust to communication impairments and resilient to cyber attacks. The work aim is to tackle and solve these challenges by proposing different properly designed control strategies. They are validated both in analytical, numerical and experimental ways. Obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the strategies in coping with communication impairments and security vulnerabilities

    Model-Free Output Feedback Path Following Control for Autonomous Vehicle With Prescribed Performance Independent of Initial Conditions

    Time-delay control (TDC) is widely recognized as a robust and straightforward model-free control approach for complex systems. However, the transient performance and settling time are often given less consideration in most TDC-based controllers. In this article, we propose an integrated control protocol that combines fixed-time prescribed performance control with time-delay estimation techniques for autonomous ground vehicles. The proposed control paradigm offers the advantages of being model-free while ensuring that the preview error converges to a neighborhood of zero within a fixed time, adhering to predefined constraint functions. To overcome the limitations of commonly used exponential decay boundaries, a prescribed performance function that remains independent of the initial conditions is employed. Furthermore, a high-order model-free fixed-time differentiator is constructed to observe the high-order dynamics of the preview error, which are essential for estimating unknown model dynamics. Finally, the simulations and practical experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the superiority of our proposed control protocol

    Robust min-max model predictive vehicle platooning with causal disturbance feedback

    Platoon-based vehicular cyber-physical systems have gained increasing attention due to their potentials in improving traffic efficiency, capacity, and saving energy. However, external uncertain disturbances arising from mismatched model errors, sensor noises, communication delays and unknown environments can impose a great challenge on the constrained control of vehicle platooning. In this paper, we propose a closed-loop min-max model predictive control (MPC) with causal disturbance feedback for vehicle platooning. Specifically, we first develop a compact form of a centralized vehicle platooning model subject to external disturbances, which also incorporates the lower-level vehicle dynamics. We then formulate the uncertain optimal control of the vehicle platoon as a worst-case constrained optimization problem and derive its robust counterpart by semidefinite relaxation. Thus, we design a causal disturbance feedback structure with the robust counterpart, which leads to a closed-loop min-max MPC platoon control solution. Even though the min-max MPC follows a centralized paradigm, its robust counterpart can keep the convexity and enable the efficient and practical implementation of current convex optimization techniques. We also derive a linear matrix inequality (LMI) condition for guaranteeing the recursive feasibility and input-to-state practical stability (ISpS) of the platoon system. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed MPC in terms of constraint satisfaction, platoon stability and robustness against different external disturbances

    Analysis and Design of Robust and High-Performance Complex Dynamical Networks

    In the first part of this dissertation, we develop some basic principles to investigate performance deterioration of dynamical networks subject to external disturbances. First, we propose a graph-theoretic methodology to relate structural specifications of the coupling graph of a linear consensus network to its performance measure. Moreover, for this class of linear consensus networks, we introduce new insights into the network centrality based not only on the network graph but also on a more structured model of network uncertainties. Then, for the class of generic linear networks, we show that the H_2-norm, as a performance measure, can be tightly bounded from below and above by some spectral functions of state and output matrices of the system. Finally, we study nonlinear autocatalytic networks and exploit their structural properties to characterize their existing hard limits and essential tradeoffs. In the second part, we consider problems of network synthesis for performance enhancement. First, we propose an axiomatic approach for the design and performance analysis of linear consensus networks by introducing a notion of systemic performance measure. We build upon this new notion and investigate a general form of combinatorial problem of growing a linear consensus network via minimizing a given systemic performance measure. Two efficient polynomial-time approximation algorithms are devised to tackle this network synthesis problem. Then, we investigate the optimal design problem of distributed system throttlers. A throttler is a mechanism that limits the flow rate of incoming metrics, e.g., byte per second, network bandwidth usage, capacity, traffic, etc. Finally, a framework is developed to produce a sparse approximation of a given large-scale network with guaranteed performance bounds using a nearly-linear time algorithm

    Energy-Efficient and Semi-automated Truck Platooning

    This open access book presents research and evaluation results of the Austrian flagship project “Connecting Austria,” illustrating the wide range of research needs and questions that arise when semi-automated truck platooning is deployed in Austria. The work presented is introduced in the context of work in similar research areas around the world. This interdisciplinary research effort considers aspects of engineering, road-vehicle and infrastructure technologies, traffic management and optimization, traffic safety, and psychology, as well as potential economic effects. The book’s broad perspective means that readers interested in current and state-of-the-art methods and techniques for the realization of semi-automated driving and with either an engineering background or with a less technical background gain a comprehensive picture of this important subject. The contributors address many questions such as: Which maneuvers does a platoon typically have to carry out, and how? How can platoons be integrated seamlessly in the traffic flow without becoming an obstacle to individual road users? What trade-offs between system information (sensors, communication effort, etc.) and efficiency are realistic? How can intersections be passed by a platoon in an intelligent fashion? Consideration of diverse disciplines and highlighting their meaning for semi-automated truck platooning, together with the highlighting of necessary research and evaluation patterns to address such a broad task scientifically, makes Energy-Efficient and Semi-automated Truck Platooning a unique contribution with methods that can be extended and adapted beyond the geographical area of the research reported
