This dissertation presents several model predictive control (MPC) techniques and finite-position-set observers (FPSOs) for permanent-magnet synchronous generators and doubly-fed induction generators in variable-speed wind turbines. The proposed FPSOs are novel ones and based on the concept of finite-control-set MPC. Then, the problems of the MPC techniques like sensitivity to variations of the model parameters and others are investigated and solved in this work.

Event-triggered distributed MPC for resilient voltage control of an islanded microgrid

This paper addresses the problem of distributed secondary voltage control of an islanded microgrid (MG) from a cyber-physical perspective. An event-triggered distributed model predictive control (DMPC) scheme is designed to regulate the voltage magnitude of each distributed generators (DGs) in order to achieve a better trade-off between the control performance and communication and computation burdens. By using two novel event triggering conditions that can be easily embedded into the DMPC for the application of MG control, the computation and communication burdens are significantly reduced with negligible compromise of control performance. In addition, to reduce the sensor cost and to eliminate the negative effects of non-linearity, an adaptive non-asymptotic observer is utilized to estimate the internal and output signals of each DG. Thanks to the deadbeat observation property, the observer can be applied periodically to cooperate with the DMPC-based voltage regulator. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control method has been tested on a simple configuration with 4 DGs and the modified IEEE-13 test system through several representative scenarios

Model predictive control for microgrid functionalities: review and future challenges

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: Renewable generation and energy storage systems are technologies which evoke the future energy paradigm. While these technologies have reached their technological maturity, the way they are integrated and operated in the future smart grids still presents several challenges. Microgrids appear as a key technology to pave the path towards the integration and optimized operation in smart grids. However, the optimization of microgrids considered as a set of subsystems introduces a high degree of complexity in the associated control problem. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a control methodology which has been satisfactorily applied to solve complex control problems in the industry and also currently it is widely researched and adopted in the research community. This paper reviews the application of MPC to microgrids from the point of view of their main functionalities, describing the design methodology and the main current advances. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of MPC and its applications in microgrids are described and summarized.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Discrete Model-Predictive-Control-Based Maximum Power Point Tracking for PV Systems:Overview and Evaluation

    Get PDF
The main objective of this work is to provide an overview and evaluation of discrete model-predictive control (MPC)-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic systems. A large number of MPC-based MPPT methods have been recently introduced in the literature with very promising performance; however, an in-depth investigation and comparison of these methods has not been carried out yet. Therefore, this paper has set out to provide an in-depth analysis and evaluation of MPC-based MPPT methods applied to various common power converter topologies. The performance of MPC-based MPPT is directly linked with the converter topology, and it is also affected by the accurate determination of the converter parameters; sensitivity to converter parameter variations is also investigated. The static and dynamic performance of the trackers is assessed according to the EN 50530 standard, using detailed simulation models, and validated by experimental tests. The analysis in this work aims to present useful insight for practicing engineers and academic researchers when selecting the maximum power point tracker for their application.</p
