Doutoramento em Engenharia ElectrotécnicaThe thesis addresses the sum rate or spectral e ciency maximization problem in cellular systems with two main components, multiple antennas and multiple users. In order to solve such a problem, several resource allocation techniques are studied and developed for di erent cellular scenarios. The antennas at the transmitters are arranged in several con gurations, i.e., co-located or distributed and for such arrangements di erent levels of coordination and cooperation between transmitters are investigated. Accounting for more receiver antennas than transmitter antennas implies that system optimization must select the best transmitter-receiver match (combinatorial problem) which can be solved with di erent degrees of cooperation between transmitters. The system models studied can be classi ed either as interference limited or as power limited systems. In interference limited systems the resource allocation is carried out independently by each transmitter which yield power leakage to unintended receivers. For this kind of systems, the access network using distributed antenna architectures is examined. The properties of distributed antenna in cellular systems as well as the gains they provide in terms of frequency reuse and throughput are assessed. Accounting for multiple user scenarios, several techniques and algorithms for transmitter-receiver assignment, power allocation, and rate allocation are developed in order to maximize the spectral e ciency. In power limited systems the transmitters jointly allocate resources among transmit and receive antennas. The transmitters are equipped with multiple antennas and signal processing is implemented in order to suppress inter-user interference. Single-cell and multi-cell systems are studied and the problem of sum rate maximization is tackled by decoupling the user selection and the resource allocation (power and precoding) processes. The user selection is a function of the type of precoding technique that is implemented and the level of information that can be processed at the transmitter. The developed user selection algorithms exploit information provided by novel channel metrics which establish the spatial compatibility between users. Each metric provides a di erent trade-o between the accuracy to identify compatible users, and the complexity required to compute it. Numerical simulations are used to assess the performance of the proposed user selection techniques (metrics and algorithms) whose performance are compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

Multiple-antenna based transmitter cooperation has been established as a promising tool towards avoiding, aligning, or shaping the interference resulting from aggressive spectral reuse. Although the impact of imperfect knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) is often investigated, it is usually assumed that the channel estimates are perfectly shared between all the transmitters. This assumption is however not adapted to many practical cases of transmitter cooperation between distant transmitters. Therefore, we focus in this thesis on the network scenario where the transmitters would like to cooperate in their transmission but can only imperfectly exchange on CSI which is acquired locally. This imperfect CSI sharing step gives rise to a CSI configuration, denoted as “distributed CSI”, where each transmitter has its own imperfect estimate of the global multi-user channel based on which it determines its transmit parameters. We study first the impact of having distributed CSI over the precoder design. Specifically, we show that conventional precoding schemes are not adapted to the distributed CSI configuration and lead to poor performance. We then turn to another aspect of this CSI configuration which is to determine “Who needs to know what", when it comes to CSI at cooperating transmitters. In contrast to the resource-hungry solution consisting in providing the same CSI to all transmitters, it is shown how a non-uniform spatial allocation of the CSI to the transmitters can provide strong gains depending on the networks topology.

Resource allocation in future green wireless networks : applications and challenges

Over the past few years, green radio communication has been an emerging topic since the footprint from the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is predicted to increase 7.3% annually and then exceed 14% of the global footprint by 2040. Moreover, the explosive progress of ICT, e.g., the fifth generation (5G) networks, has resulted in expectations of achieving 10-fold longer device battery lifetime, and 1000-fold higher global mobile data traffic over the fourth generation (4G) networks. Therefore, the demands for increasing the data rate and the lifetime while reducing the footprint in the next-generation wireless networks call for more efficient utilization of energy and other resources. To overcome this challenge, the concepts of small-cell, energy harvesting, and wireless information and power transfer networks can be evaluated as promising solutions for re-greening the world. In this dissertation, the technical contributions in terms of saving economical cost, protecting the environment, and guaranteeing human health are provided. More specifically, novel communication scenarios are proposed to minimize energy consumption and hence save economic costs. Further, energy harvesting (EH) techniques are applied to exploit available green resources in order to reduce carbon footprint and then protect the environment. In locations where implemented user devices might not harvest energy directly from natural resources, base stations could harvest-and-store green energy and then use such energy to power the devices wirelessly. However, wireless power transfer (WPT) techniques should be used in a wise manner to avoid electromagnetic pollution and then guarantee human health. To achieve all these aspects simultaneously, this thesis proposes promising schemes to optimally manage and allocate resources in future networks. Given this direction, in the first part, Chapter 2 mainly studies a transmission power minimization scheme for a two-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet) over frequency selective fading channels. In addition, the HetNet backhaul connection is unable to support a sufficient throughput for signaling an information exchange between two tiers. A novel idea is introduced in which the time reversal (TR) beamforming technique is used at a femtocell while zero-forcing-based beamforming is deployed at a macrocell. Thus, a downlink power minimizationscheme is proposed, and optimal closed-form solutions are provided. In the second part, Chapters 3, 4, and 5 concentrate on EH and wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) using RF signals. More specifically, Chapter 3 presents an overview of the recent progress in green radio communications and discusses potential technologies for some emerging topics on the platforms of EH and WPT. Chapter 4 develops a new integrated information and energy receiver architecture based on the direct use of alternating current (AC) for computation. It is shown that the proposed approach enhances not only the computational ability but also the energy efficiency over the conventional one. Furthermore, Chapter 5 proposes a novel resource allocation scheme in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) networks where three crucial issues: power-efficient improvement, user-fairness guarantee, and non-ideal channel reciprocity effect mitigation, are jointly addressed. Hence, novel methods to derive optimal and suboptimal solutions are provided. In the third part, Chapters 6, 7, and 8 focus on simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) for indoor applications, as a complementary technology to RF SWIPT. In this research, Chapter 6 investigates a hybrid RF/visible light communication (VLC) ultrasmall cell network where optical transmitters deliver information and power using the visible light, whereas an RF access point works as a complementary power transfer system. Thus, a novel resource allocation scheme exploiting RF and visible light for power transfer is devised. Chapter 7 proposes the use of lightwave power transfer to enable future sustainable Federated Learning (FL)-based wireless networks. FL is a new data privacy protection technique for training shared machine learning models in a distributed approach. However, the involvement of energy-constrained mobile devices in the construction of the shared learning models may significantly reduce their lifetime. The proposed approach can support the FL-based wireless network to overcome the issue of limited energy at mobile devices. Chapter 8 introduces a novel framework for collaborative RF and lightwave power transfer for wireless communication networks. The constraints on the transmission power set by safety regulations result in significant challenges to enhance the power transfer performance. Thus, the study of technologies complementary to conventional RF SWIPT is essential. To cope with this isue, this chapter proposes a novel collaborative RF and lightwave power transfer technology for next-generation wireless networks

The major challenges faced by the gas turbine industry, for both the users and the manufacturers, is the reduction in life cycle costs , as well as the safe and efficient running of gas turbines. In view of the above, it would be advantageous to have a diagnostics system capable of reliably detecting component faults (even though limited to gas path components) in a quantitative marmer. V This thesis presents the development an integrated fault diagnostics model for identifying shifts in component performance and sensor faults using advanced concepts in genetic algorithm. The diagnostics model operates in three distinct stages. The rst stage uses response surfaces for computing objective functions to increase the exploration potential of the search space while easing the computational burden. The second stage uses the heuristics modification of genetics algorithm parameters through a master-slave type configuration. The third stage uses the elitist model concept in genetic algorithm to preserve the accuracy of the solution in the face of randomness. The above fault diagnostics model has been integrated with a nested neural network to form a hybrid diagnostics model. The nested neural network is employed as a pre- processor or lter to reduce the number of fault classes to be explored by the genetic algorithm based diagnostics model. The hybrid model improves the accuracy, reliability and consistency of the results obtained. In addition signicant improvements in the total run time have also been observed. The advanced cycle Intercooled Recuperated WR2l engine has been used as the test engine for implementing the diagnostics model.SOE Prize winne
