Theory and Applications of Robust Optimization
In this paper we survey the primary research, both theoretical and applied,
in the area of Robust Optimization (RO). Our focus is on the computational
attractiveness of RO approaches, as well as the modeling power and broad
applicability of the methodology. In addition to surveying prominent
theoretical results of RO, we also present some recent results linking RO to
adaptable models for multi-stage decision-making problems. Finally, we
highlight applications of RO across a wide spectrum of domains, including
finance, statistics, learning, and various areas of engineering.Comment: 50 page
Multi-Step Knowledge-Aided Iterative ESPRIT for Direction Finding
In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for DOA estimation which
iteratively reduces the disturbance factors of the estimated data covariance
matrix and incorporates prior knowledge which is gradually obtained on line. An
analysis of the MSE of the reshaped data covariance matrix is carried out along
with comparisons between computational complexities of the proposed and
existing algorithms. Simulations focusing on closely-spaced sources, where they
are uncorrelated and correlated, illustrate the improvements achieved.Comment: 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1703.1052
Joint Tensor Factorization and Outlying Slab Suppression with Applications
We consider factoring low-rank tensors in the presence of outlying slabs.
This problem is important in practice, because data collected in many
real-world applications, such as speech, fluorescence, and some social network
data, fit this paradigm. Prior work tackles this problem by iteratively
selecting a fixed number of slabs and fitting, a procedure which may not
converge. We formulate this problem from a group-sparsity promoting point of
view, and propose an alternating optimization framework to handle the
corresponding () minimization-based low-rank tensor
factorization problem. The proposed algorithm features a similar per-iteration
complexity as the plain trilinear alternating least squares (TALS) algorithm.
Convergence of the proposed algorithm is also easy to analyze under the
framework of alternating optimization and its variants. In addition,
regularization and constraints can be easily incorporated to make use of
\emph{a priori} information on the latent loading factors. Simulations and real
data experiments on blind speech separation, fluorescence data analysis, and
social network mining are used to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed
algorithm
