    Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost, WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process (MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs

    Learning and Matching Multi-View Descriptors for Registration of Point Clouds

    Critical to the registration of point clouds is the establishment of a set of accurate correspondences between points in 3D space. The correspondence problem is generally addressed by the design of discriminative 3D local descriptors on the one hand, and the development of robust matching strategies on the other hand. In this work, we first propose a multi-view local descriptor, which is learned from the images of multiple views, for the description of 3D keypoints. Then, we develop a robust matching approach, aiming at rejecting outlier matches based on the efficient inference via belief propagation on the defined graphical model. We have demonstrated the boost of our approaches to registration on the public scanning and multi-view stereo datasets. The superior performance has been verified by the intensive comparisons against a variety of descriptors and matching methods

    Deep convolutional regression modelling for forest parameter retrieval

    Accurate forest monitoring is crucial as forests are major global carbon sinks. Additionally, accurate prediction of forest parameters, such as forest biomass and stem volume (SV), has economic importance. Therefore, the development of regression models for forest parameter retrieval is essential. Existing forest parameter estimation methods use regression models that establish pixel-wise relationships between ground reference data and corresponding pixels in remote sensing (RS) images. However, these models often overlook spatial contextual relationships among neighbouring pixels, limiting the potential for improved forest monitoring. The emergence of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) provides opportunities for enhanced forest parameter retrieval through their convolutional filters that allow for contextual modelling. However, utilising deep CNNs for regression presents its challenges. One significant challenge is that the training of CNNs typically requires continuous data layers for both predictor and response variables. While RS data is continuous, the ground reference data is sparse and scattered across large areas due to the challenges and costs associated with in situ data collection. This thesis tackles challenges related to using CNNs for regression by introducing novel deep learning-based solutions across diverse forest types and parameters. To address the sparsity of available reference data, RS-derived prediction maps can be used as auxiliary data to train the CNN-based regression models. This is addressed through two different approaches. Although these prediction maps offer greater spatial coverage than the original ground reference data, they do not ensure spatially continuous prediction target data. This work proposes a novel methodology that enables CNN-based regression models to handle this diversity. Efficient CNN architectures for the regression task are developed by investigating relevant learning objectives, including a new frequency-aware one. To enable large-scale and cost-effective regression modelling of forests, this thesis suggests utilising C-band synthetic aperture radar SAR data as regressor input. Results demonstrate the substantial potential of C-band SAR-based convolutional regression models for forest parameter retrieval

    Automated anomaly recognition in real time data streams for oil and gas industry.

    There is a growing demand for computer-assisted real-time anomaly detection - from the identification of suspicious activities in cyber security, to the monitoring of engineering data for various applications across the oil and gas, automotive and other engineering industries. To reduce the reliance on field experts' knowledge for identification of these anomalies, this thesis proposes a deep-learning anomaly-detection framework that can help to create an effective real-time condition-monitoring framework. The aim of this research is to develop a real-time and re-trainable generic anomaly-detection framework, which is capable of predicting and identifying anomalies with a high level of accuracy - even when a specific anomalous event has no precedent. Machine-based condition monitoring is preferable in many practical situations where fast data analysis is required, and where there are harsh climates or otherwise life-threatening environments. For example, automated conditional monitoring systems are ideal in deep sea exploration studies, offshore installations and space exploration. This thesis firstly reviews studies about anomaly detection using machine learning. It then adopts the best practices from those studies in order to propose a multi-tiered framework for anomaly detection with heterogeneous input sources, which can deal with unseen anomalies in a real-time dynamic problem environment. The thesis then applies the developed generic multi-tiered framework to two fields of engineering: data analysis and malicious cyber attack detection. Finally, the framework is further refined based on the outcomes of those case studies and is used to develop a secure cross-platform API, capable of re-training and data classification on a real-time data feed

    Fast fluorescence lifetime imaging and sensing via deep learning

    Error on title page – year of award is 2023.Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) has become a valuable tool in diverse disciplines. This thesis presents deep learning (DL) approaches to addressing two major challenges in FLIM: slow and complex data analysis and the high photon budget for precisely quantifying the fluorescence lifetimes. DL's ability to extract high-dimensional features from data has revolutionized optical and biomedical imaging analysis. This thesis contributes several novel DL FLIM algorithms that significantly expand FLIM's scope. Firstly, a hardware-friendly pixel-wise DL algorithm is proposed for fast FLIM data analysis. The algorithm has a simple architecture yet can effectively resolve multi-exponential decay models. The calculation speed and accuracy outperform conventional methods significantly. Secondly, a DL algorithm is proposed to improve FLIM image spatial resolution, obtaining high-resolution (HR) fluorescence lifetime images from low-resolution (LR) images. A computational framework is developed to generate large-scale semi-synthetic FLIM datasets to address the challenge of the lack of sufficient high-quality FLIM datasets. This algorithm offers a practical approach to obtaining HR FLIM images quickly for FLIM systems. Thirdly, a DL algorithm is developed to analyze FLIM images with only a few photons per pixel, named Few-Photon Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FPFLI) algorithm. FPFLI uses spatial correlation and intensity information to robustly estimate the fluorescence lifetime images, pushing this photon budget to a record-low level of only a few photons per pixel. Finally, a time-resolved flow cytometry (TRFC) system is developed by integrating an advanced CMOS single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array and a DL processor. The SPAD array, using a parallel light detection scheme, shows an excellent photon-counting throughput. A quantized convolutional neural network (QCNN) algorithm is designed and implemented on a field-programmable gate array as an embedded processor.     Autonomy in the real real-world: A behaviour based view of autonomous systems control in an industrial product inspection system

    The thesis presented in this dissertation appears in two sequential parts that arose from an exploration of the use of Behaviour Based Artificial Intelligence (BBAI) techniques in a domain outside that of robotics, where BBAI is most frequently used. The work details a real-world physical implementation of the control and interactions of an industrial product inspection system from a BBAI perspective. It concentrates particularly on the control of a number of active laser scanning sensor systems (each a subsystem of a larger main inspection system), using a subsumption architecture. This industrial implementation is in itself a new direction for BBAI control and an important aspect of this thesis. However, the work has also led on to the development of a number of key ideas which contribute to the field of BBAI in general. The second part of the thesis concerns the nature of physical and temporal constraints on a distributed control system and the desirability of utilising mechanisms to provide continuous, low-level learning and adaptation of domain knowledge on a sub-behavioural basis. Techniques used include artificial neural networks and hill-climbing state-space search algorithms. Discussion is supported with examples from experiments with the laser scanning inspection system. Encouraging results suggest that concerted design effort at this low level of activity will benefit the whole system in terms of behavioural robustness and reliability. Relevant aspects of the design process that should be of value in similar real-world projects are identified and emphasised. These issues are particularly important in providing a firm foundation for artificial intelligence based control systems
