    Application of Improved Jellyfish Search algorithm in Rotate Vector reducer fault diagnosis

    In order to overcome the low accuracy of traditional Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) network in the performance evaluation of Rotate Vector (RV) reducer, a pattern recognition model of ELM based on Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) fusion and Improved artificial Jellyfish Search (IJS) algorithm was proposed for RV reducer fault diagnosis. Firstly, it is theoretically proved that the torque transmission of RV reducer has periodicity during normal operation. The characteristics of data periodicity can be effectively reflected by using the test signal periodicity characteristics of rotating machinery and EEMD. Secondly, the Logistic chaotic mapping of population initialization in JS algorithm is replaced by tent mapping. At the same time, the competition mechanism is introduced to form a new IJS. The simulation results of standard test function show that the new algorithm has the characteristics of faster convergence and higher accuracy. The new algorithm was used to optimize the input layer weight of the ELM, and the pattern recognition model of IJS-ELM was established. The model performance was tested by XJTU-SY bearing experimental data set of Xi'an Jiaotong University. The results show that the new model is superior to JS-ELM and ELM in multi-classification performance. Finally, the new model is applied to the fault diagnosis of RV reducer. The results show that the proposed EEMD-IJS-ELM fault diagnosis model has higher accuracy and stability than other models

    Increasing the robustness of autonomous systems to hardware degradation using machine learning

    Autonomous systems perform predetermined tasks (missions) with minimum supervision. In most applications, the state of the world changes with time. Sensors are employed to measure part or whole of the world’s state. However, sensors often fail amidst operation; feeding as such decision-making with wrong information about the world. Moreover, hardware degradation may alter dynamic behaviour, and subsequently the capabilities, of an autonomous system; rendering the original mission infeasible. This thesis applies machine learning to yield powerful and robust tools that can facilitate autonomy in modern systems. Incremental kernel regression is used for dynamic modelling. Algorithms of this sort are easy to train and are highly adaptive. Adaptivity allows for model adjustments, whenever the environment of operation changes. Bayesian reasoning provides a rigorous framework for addressing uncertainty. Moreover, using Bayesian Networks, complex inference regarding hardware degradation can be answered. Specifically, adaptive modelling is combined with Bayesian reasoning to yield recursive estimation algorithms that are robust to sensor failures. Two solutions are presented by extending existing recursive estimation algorithms from the robotics literature. The algorithms are deployed on an underwater vehicle and the performance is assessed in real-world experiments. A comparison against standard filters is also provided. Next, the previous algorithms are extended to consider sensor and actuator failures jointly. An algorithm that can detect thruster failures in an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle has been developed. Moreover, the algorithm adapts the dynamic model online to compensate for the detected fault. The performance of this algorithm was also tested in a real-world application. One step further than hardware fault detection, prognostics predict how much longer can a particular hardware component operate normally. Ubiquitous sensors in modern systems render data-driven prognostics a viable solution. However, training is based on skewed datasets; datasets where the samples from the faulty region of operation are much fewer than the ones from the healthy region of operation.     Linear friction weld process monitoring of fixture cassette deformations using empirical mode decomposition

    Due to its inherent advantages, linear friction welding is a solid-state joining process of increasing importance to the aerospace, automotive, medical and power generation equipment industries. Tangential oscillations and forge stroke during the burn-off phase of the joining process introduce essential dynamic forces, which can also be detrimental to the welding process. Since burn-off is a critical phase in the manufacturing stage, process monitoring is fundamental for quality and stability control purposes. This study aims to improve workholding stability through the analysis of fixture cassette deformations. Methods and procedures for process monitoring are developed and implemented in a fail-or-pass assessment system for fixture cassette deformations during the burn-off phase. Additionally, the de-noised signals are compared to results from previous production runs. The observed deformations as a consequence of the forces acting on the fixture cassette are measured directly during the welding process. Data on the linear friction-welding machine are acquired and de-noised using empirical mode decomposition, before the burn-off phase is extracted. This approach enables a direct, objective comparison of the signal features with trends from previous successful welds. The capacity of the whole process monitoring system is validated and demonstrated through the analysis of a large number of signals obtained from welding experiments

    Application of variational mode decomposition in vibration analysis of machine components

    Monitoring and diagnosis of machinery in maintenance are often undertaken using vibration analysis. The machine vibration signal is invariably complex and diverse, and thus useful information and features are difficult to extract. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) is a recent signal processing method that able to extract some of important features from machine vibration signal. The performance of the VMD method depends on the selection of its input parameters, especially the mode number and balancing parameter (also known as quadratic penalty term). However, the current VMD method is still using a manual effort to extract the input parameters where it subjects to interpretation of experienced experts. Hence, machine diagnosis becomes time consuming and prone to error. The aim of this research was to propose an automated parameter selection method for selecting the VMD input parameters. The proposed method consisted of two-stage selections where the first stage selection was used to select the initial mode number and the second stage selection was used to select the optimized mode number and balancing parameter. A new machine diagnosis approach was developed, named as VMD Differential Evolution Algorithm (VMDEA)-Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). Vibration signal datasets were then reconstructed using VMDEA and the multi-domain features consisted of time-domain, frequency-domain and multi-scale fuzzy entropy were extracted. It was demonstrated that the VMDEA method was able to reduce the computational time about 14% to 53% as compared to VMD-Genetic Algorithm (GA), VMD-Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and VMD-Differential Evolution (DE) approaches for bearing, shaft and gear. It also exhibited a better convergence with about two to nine less iterations as compared to VMD-GA, VMD-PSO and VMD-DE for bearing, shaft and gear. The VMDEA-ELM was able to illustrate higher classification accuracy about 11% to 20% than Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD)-ELM, Ensemble EMD (EEMD)-ELM and Complimentary EEMD (CEEMD)-ELM for bearing shaft and gear. The bearing datasets from Case Western Reserve University were tested with VMDEA-ELM model and compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM)-Dempster-Shafer (DS), EEMD Optimal Mode Multi-scale Fuzzy Entropy Fault Diagnosis (EOMSMFD), Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT)-Local Characteristic-scale Decomposition (LCD)- ELM, and Arctangent S-shaped PSO least square support vector machine (ATSWPLM) models in term of its classification accuracy. The VMDEA-ELM model demonstrates better diagnosis accuracy with small differences between 2% to 4% as compared to EOMSMFD and WPT-LCD-ELM but less diagnosis accuracy in the range of 4% to 5% as compared to SVM-DS and ATSWPLM. The diagnosis approach VMDEA-ELM was also able to provide faster classification performance about 6 40 times faster than Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). This study provides an improved solution in determining an optimized VMD parameters by using VMDEA. It also demonstrates a more accurate and effective diagnostic approach for machine maintenance using VMDEA-ELM

    Condition based maintenance has become an increasingly popular maintenance strategy. According to the strategy, maintenance decisions are made in compliance with the actual condition of the equipment. The introduction of condition based maintenance strategy requires the establishment of a condition monitoring system that is used to determine the condition of the maintained equipment. One way to observe the condition of the equipment is to analyze the changes in its audio signature. This study examines the feasibility of an audio based condition monitoring system for the condition monitoring of a certain type of equipment. First, the audio signatures are measured in several conditions, where the equipment operates normally, and in three fault situations. Obtained audio signatures are then analyzed by using statistical features in time and frequency domain as well as power spectral densities. From the three fault cases, two can be accurately detected by using the selected methods. Different normal operational conditions do affect the sound signature, but notably not as much as the detected faults do.Laitteen kunnonvalvontaan perustuva menetelmä on viime aikoina noussut suosituksi kunnossapitostrategiaksi. Kyseisessä strategiassa huollot ja korjaukset tehdään laitteen senhetkisen kunnon mukaan. Tästä syystä strategian käyttöönotto vaatii toimivan kunnonvalvontajärjestelmän. Eräs tapa havainnoida laitteen kuntoa on analysoida laitteen tuottamia ääniä ja niiden muutoksia. Tässä työssä tutkitaan ääneen perustuvan kunnonvalvontajärjestelmän soveltuvuutta tietyn tyyppisen laitteen kunnonvalvontaan. Työssä mitataan laitteen tuottamia äänisignaaleja eri normaalin toiminnan olosuhteissa, sekä kolmessa eri vikatilanteessa. Äänisignaalien analysointiin käytetään aika- ja taajuustason tilastollisia parametreja, sekä äänisignaalin spektriä. Valituilla menetelmillä pystytään selkeästi havaitsemaan kaksi kolmesta testatusta vikatilanteesta. Erilaiset normaalin toiminnan olosuhteet vaikuttavat myös laitteen tuottamiin ääniin, mutta vaikutukset ovat selvästi pienemmät kuin havaittujen vikojen aiheuttamat muutokset

    Deep Cellular Recurrent Neural Architecture for Efficient Multidimensional Time-Series Data Processing

    Efficient processing of time series data is a fundamental yet challenging problem in pattern recognition. Though recent developments in machine learning and deep learning have enabled remarkable improvements in processing large scale datasets in many application domains, most are designed and regulated to handle inputs that are static in time. Many real-world data, such as in biomedical, surveillance and security, financial, manufacturing and engineering applications, are rarely static in time, and demand models able to recognize patterns in both space and time. Current machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models adapted for time series processing tend to grow in complexity and size to accommodate the additional dimensionality of time. Specifically, the biologically inspired learning based models known as artificial neural networks that have shown extraordinary success in pattern recognition, tend to grow prohibitively large and cumbersome in the presence of large scale multi-dimensional time series biomedical data such as EEG. Consequently, this work aims to develop representative ML and DL models for robust and efficient large scale time series processing. First, we design a novel ML pipeline with efficient feature engineering to process a large scale multi-channel scalp EEG dataset for automated detection of epileptic seizures. With the use of a sophisticated yet computationally efficient time-frequency analysis technique known as harmonic wavelet packet transform and an efficient self-similarity computation based on fractal dimension, we achieve state-of-the-art performance for automated seizure detection in EEG data. Subsequently, we investigate the development of a novel efficient deep recurrent learning model for large scale time series processing. For this, we first study the functionality and training of a biologically inspired neural network architecture known as cellular simultaneous recurrent neural network (CSRN). We obtain a generalization of this network for multiple topological image processing tasks and investigate the learning efficacy of the complex cellular architecture using several state-of-the-art training methods. Finally, we develop a novel deep cellular recurrent neural network (CDRNN) architecture based on the biologically inspired distributed processing used in CSRN for processing time series data. The proposed DCRNN leverages the cellular recurrent architecture to promote extensive weight sharing and efficient, individualized, synchronous processing of multi-source time series data. Experiments on a large scale multi-channel scalp EEG, and a machine fault detection dataset show that the proposed DCRNN offers state-of-the-art recognition performance while using substantially fewer trainable recurrent units
