    Smart sensing and adaptive reasoning for enabling industrial robots with interactive human-robot capabilities in dynamic environments: a case study.

    Traditional industry is seeing an increasing demand for more autonomous and flexible manufacturing in unstructured settings, a shift away from the fixed, isolated workspaces where robots perform predefined actions repetitively. This work presents a case study in which a robotic manipulator, namely a KUKA KR90 R3100, is provided with smart sensing capabilities such as vision and adaptive reasoning for real-time collision avoidance and online path planning in dynamically-changing environments. A machine vision module based on low-cost cameras and color detection in the hue, saturation, value (HSV) space is developed to make the robot aware of its changing environment. Therefore, this vision allows the detection and localization of a randomly moving obstacle. Path correction to avoid collision avoidance for such obstacles with robotic manipulator is achieved by exploiting an adaptive path planning module along with a dedicated robot control module, where the three modules run simultaneously. These sensing/smart capabilities allow the smooth interactions between the robot and its dynamic environment, where the robot needs to react to dynamic changes through autonomous thinking and reasoning with the reaction times below the average human reaction time. The experimental results demonstrate that effective human-robot and robot-robot interactions can be realized through the innovative integration of emerging sensing techniques, efficient planning algorithms and systematic designs

    A Comprehensive Overview of Classical and Modern Route Planning Algorithms for Self-Driving Mobile Robots

    Mobile robots are increasingly being applied in a variety of sectors, including agricultural, firefighting, and search and rescue operations. Robotics and autonomous technology research and development have played a major role in making this possible. Before a robot can reliably and effectively navigate a space without human aid, there are still several challenges to be addressed. When planning a path to its destination, the robot should be able to gather information from its surroundings and take the appropriate actions to avoid colliding with obstacles along the way. The following review analyses and compares 200 articles from two databases, Scopus and IEEE Xplore, and selects 60 articles as references from those articles. This evaluation focuses mostly on the accuracy of the different path-planning algorithms. Common collision-free path planning methodologies are examined in this paper, including classical or traditional and modern intelligence techniques, as well as both global and local approaches, in static and dynamic environments. Classical or traditional methods, such as Roadmaps (Visibility Graph and Voronoi Diagram), Potential Fields, and Cell Decomposition, and modern methodologies such as heuristic-based (Dijkstra Method, A* Algorithms, and D* Algorithms), metaheuristics algorithms (such as PSO, Bat Algorithm, ACO, and Genetic Algorithm), and neural systems such as fuzzy neural networks or fuzzy logic (FL) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are described in this report.     Mathematical Modelling and Methods for Load Balancing and Coordination of Multi-Robot Stations

    The automotive industry is moving from mass production towards an individualized production, individualizing parts aims to improve product quality and to reduce costs and material waste. This thesis concerns aspects of load balancing and coordination of multi-robot stations in the automotive manufacturing industry, considering efficient algorithms required by an individualized production. The goal of the load balancing problem is to improve the equipment utilization. Several approaches for solving the load balancing problem are suggested along with details on mathematical tools and subroutines employed.Our contributions to the solution of the load balancing problem are fourfold. First, to circumvent robot coordination we construct disjoint robot programs, which require no coordination schemes, are flexible, admit competitive cycle times for several industrial instances, and may be preferred in an individualized production. Second, since solving the task assignment problem for generating the disjoint robot programs was found to be unreasonably time-consuming, we model it as a generalized unrelated parallel machine problem with set packing constraints and suggest a tailored Lagrangian-based branch-and-bound algorithm. Third, a continuous collision detection method needs to determine whether the sweeps of multiple moving robots are disjoint. We suggest using the maximum velocity of each robot along with distance computations at certain robot configurations to derive a function that provides lower bounds on the minimum distance between the sweeps. The lower bounding function is iteratively minimized and updated with new distance information; our method is substantially faster than previously developed methods. Fourth, to allow for load balancing of complex multi-robot stations we generalize the disjoint robot programs into sequences of such; for some instances this procedure provides a significant equipment utilization improvement in comparison with previous automated methods

    An Iterative Approach for Collision Feee Routing and Scheduling in Multirobot Stations

    This work is inspired by the problem of planning sequences of operations, as welding, in car manufacturing stations where multiple industrial robots cooperate. The goal is to minimize the station cycle time, \emph{i.e.} the time it takes for the last robot to finish its cycle. This is done by dispatching the tasks among the robots, and by routing and scheduling the robots in a collision-free way, such that they perform all predefined tasks. We propose an iterative and decoupled approach in order to cope with the high complexity of the problem. First, collisions among robots are neglected, leading to a min-max Multiple Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (MGTSP). Then, when the sets of robot loads have been obtained and fixed, we sequence and schedule their tasks, with the aim to avoid conflicts. The first problem (min-max MGTSP) is solved by an exact branch and bound method, where different lower bounds are presented by combining the solutions of a min-max set partitioning problem and of a Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem (GTSP). The second problem is approached by assuming that robots move synchronously: a novel transformation of this synchronous problem into a GTSP is presented. Eventually, in order to provide complete robot solutions, we include path planning functionalities, allowing the robots to avoid collisions with the static environment and among themselves. These steps are iterated until a satisfying solution is obtained. Experimental results are shown for both problems and for their combination. We even show the results of the iterative method, applied to an industrial test case adapted from a stud welding station in a car manufacturing line

    Learning to reach and reaching to learn: a unified approach to path planning and reactive control through reinforcement learning

    The next generation of intelligent robots will need to be able to plan reaches. Not just ballistic point to point reaches, but reaches around things such as the edge of a table, a nearby human, or any other known object in the robot’s workspace. Planning reaches may seem easy to us humans, because we do it so intuitively, but it has proven to be a challenging problem, which continues to limit the versatility of what robots can do today. In this document, I propose a novel intrinsically motivated RL system that draws on both Path/Motion Planning and Reactive Control. Through Reinforcement Learning, it tightly integrates these two previously disparate approaches to robotics. The RL system is evaluated on a task, which is as yet unsolved by roboticists in practice. That is to put the palm of the iCub humanoid robot on arbitrary target objects in its workspace, start- ing from arbitrary initial configurations. Such motions can be generated by planning, or searching the configuration space, but this typically results in some kind of trajectory, which must then be tracked by a separate controller, and such an approach offers a brit- tle runtime solution because it is inflexible. Purely reactive systems are robust to many problems that render a planned trajectory infeasible, but lacking the capacity to search, they tend to get stuck behind constraints, and therefore do not replace motion planners. The planner/controller proposed here is novel in that it deliberately plans reaches without the need to track trajectories. Instead, reaches are composed of sequences of reactive motion primitives, implemented by my Modular Behavioral Environment (MoBeE), which provides (fictitious) force control with reactive collision avoidance by way of a realtime kinematic/geometric model of the robot and its workspace. Thus, to the best of my knowledge, mine is the first reach planning approach to simultaneously offer the best of both the Path/Motion Planning and Reactive Control approaches. By controlling the real, physical robot directly, and feeling the influence of the con- straints imposed by MoBeE, the proposed system learns a stochastic model of the iCub’s configuration space. Then, the model is exploited as a multiple query path planner to find sensible pre-reach poses, from which to initiate reaching actions. Experiments show that the system can autonomously find practical reaches to target objects in workspace and offers excellent robustness to changes in the workspace configuration as well as noise in the robot’s sensory-motor apparatus

    A novel framework to improve motion planning of robotic systems through semantic knowledge-based reasoning

    The need to improve motion planning techniques for manipulator robots, and new effective strategies to manipulate different objects to perform more complex tasks, is crucial for various real-world applications where robots cooperate with humans. This paper proposes a novel framework that aims to improve the motion planning of a robotic agent (a manipulator robot) through semantic knowledge-based reasoning. The Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) was used to infer new knowledge based on the known environment and the robotic system. Ontological knowledge, e.g., semantic maps, were generated through a deep neural network, trained to detect and classify objects in the environment where the robotic agent performs. Manipulation constraints were deduced, and the environment corresponding to the agent’s manipulation workspace was created so the planner could interpret it to generate a collision-free path. For reasoning with the ontology, different SPARQL queries were used. The proposed framework was implemented and validated in a real experimental setup, using the planning framework ROSPlan to perform the planning tasks.
