    Supply chain natural resource scarcity strategies and their implications for ogranisational performance.:an empirical study of manufacturing companies.

    Concerns about natural resource scarcity are growing as some of these resources are critical for the successful functioning of firms. Research into the appropriate strategies for minimising dependencies caused by the scarcity of natural resources is still insufficient in the field of supply chain management. Whilst there is a growing recognition of the need to handle the issue of natural resource scarcity, there is limited empirical work on investigating what supply chain strategies should be utilised. This research provides insights from manufacturing companies and explores the conditions under which a specific natural resource will lead to buffering and/or bridging strategies and the implications for organisational performance. The research attempts to contribute to theory development by developing a Resource Dependence Theory based framework. The framework identifies the contingency factors that determine companies’ dependence that leads to specific supply chain strategies. This study contributes further into the identification of the impacts of these strategies on organisational performance. The proposed conceptual framework is validated through the means of exploratory research. The empirical research included the collection of qualitative data from thirteen companies that use different natural resources. In order to manage and analyse the 31 semi-structured interviews content analysis was conducted using the qualitative analysis software NVivo. After the qualitative first stage, quantitative research followed to validate the findings. Responses from 183 logistics, purchasing and supply chain managers were collected and analysed by using the partial least squares (PLS) method to verify the relationships between the constructs in the framework. The study reveals that there are three main contingent factors, namely; the importance of the scarce natural resource (e.g. the price of the natural resources), the supplier substitutability of the scarce natural resource (e.g. number of suppliers) and the discretion over the scarce natural resource (e.g. legislation and geopolitical risk). This is leading companies to natural resource dependencies thus to specific supply chain NRS strategies (i.e. buffering strategies and bridging strategies). The research has shown that the two strategies can improve both resource efficiency and a company’s competitive advantage

    Key performance indicators for sustainable manufacturing evaluation in automotive companies

    The automotive industry is regarded as one of the most important and strategic industry in manufacturing sector. It is the largest manufacturing enterprise in the world and one of the most resource intensive industries of all major industrial system. However, its products and processes are a significant source of environmental impact. Thus, there is a need to evaluate sustainable manufacturing performance in this industry. This paper proposes a set of initial key performance indicators (KPIs) for sustainable manufacturing evaluation believed to be appropriate to automotive companies, consisting of three factors divided into nine dimensions and a total of 41 sub-dimensions. A survey will be conducted to confirm the adaptability of the initial KPIs with the industry practices. Future research will focus on developing an evaluation tool to assess sustainable manufacturing performance in automotive companies

    Terrorism affected regions : the impact of different supply chain risk management strategies on financial performance

    Purpose: Current geo-political events, such as terrorism and climatologic adversities, have highlighted the potential risks to supply chains (SCs), and their disastrous financial impacts on supply chains. Within supply chains, risk management plays a major role in successfully managing business processes in a proactive manner and ensuring the business continuity and financial performance (FP). The purpose of this study is to explore the supply chain risks and strategies in a terrorism-affected region (TAR), and to examine supply chain risk management (SCRM) strategies and their impacts on FP, including the war on terror (WoT) and its impacts on the local logistics industry. In addition, this study investigates the knowledge gaps in the published research on terrorism-related risk in supply chains, and develops a framework of strategies and effective decision-making to enable practitioners to address terrorism-related risks for SCRM.Methodology: The study initially adopts a novel combination of triangulated methods comprising a systematic literature review, text mining, and network analysis. Additionally, risk identification, risk analysis and strategies scrutiny are conducted by using semi-structured interviews and Qualitative Content Analysis in a TAR. A model of strategies was developed from a review of existing studies and interviews. The model is empirically tested with survey data of 80 firms using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA).Findings: This study reveals a number of key themes in the field of SCRM linked with terrorism. It identifies relevant mitigation strategies and practices for effective strategic decision-making. This subsequently leads to development of a strategic framework, consisting of strategies and effective-decision making practices to address terrorism-related risks that affect SCRM. It also identifies key the knowledge gaps in the literature and explores the main contributions by disciplines (e.g., business schools, engineering, and maritime institutions) and countries.Further, it identifies the SC risks in a TAR, which consist of value streams: disruption risks, operational risks and financial risks. Among these, the emerging risks emcompass terrorist groups’ demand for protection money, smog, paedophilia and the use of containers to block protesters. To mitigate these risks, firms frequently implemented the following strategies: information sharing, SC coordination, risk sharing, SC finance, SC security and facilitation payment. Five strategies out of the six (except facilitation payment) are able to lead to FP, confirmed quantitatively as well. There are various equifinal configurations of SCRM strategies leading to FP. In addition, information sharing acts as a moderator in the relationship between SC security and FP. SC coordination has a mediating role in the relationship between information sharing and SC security capabilities and FP.Research limitations/Contribution: The sample size a limitation of the study, meaning that the findings should be generalized with caution. The most valuable implications is the identification of configurations of strategies that can help managers and policymakers in implementing those findings.Originality/value: No empirical study was found in the SCRM literature that specifically investigates the relationships between the identified strategies and FP with fsQCA, in particular in a TAR context; this study thus fills an important gap in the SCRM literature and contributes empirically

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

Volume 1 (NASASP-210-580) was prepared for the purpose of presenting the overall framework for System Safety and for providing the general concepts needed to implement the framework. Volume 2 provides guidance for implementing these concepts as an integral part of systems engineering and risk management.     Critical Infrastructures (CIs) remain among the most important and vital service providers to modern societies. Severe CIs’ disruptions may endanger security of the citizen, availability of strategic assets and even the governance stability. Not surprisingly, CIs are often targets of intentional attacks, either of physical or cyber nature. Newly emerging hybrid threats primarily target CIs as part of the warfare. ESReDA as one of the most active EU networks in the field has initiated a project group (CI-PR/MS&A-Data) on the “Critical Infrastructure/Modelling, Simulation and Analysis – Data”. The main focus of the project group is to report on the state of progress in MS&A of the CIs preparedness & resilience with a specific focus on the corresponding data availability and relevance. In order to report on the most recent developments in the field of the CIs preparedness & resilience MS&A and the availability of the relevant data, ESReDA held its 48th, 52nd and 56th Seminars. The 56th ESReDA Seminar on “Critical Services continuity, Resilience and Security” attracted about 30 participants from industry, authorities, operators, research centres and academia.
