    A Platform-Based Software Design Methodology for Embedded Control Systems: An Agile Toolkit

    A discrete control system, with stringent hardware constraints, is effectively an embedded real-time system and hence requires a rigorous methodology to develop the software involved. The development methodology proposed in this paper adapts agile principles and patterns to support the building of embedded control systems, focusing on the issues relating to a system's constraints and safety. Strong unit testing, to ensure correctness, including the satisfaction of timing constraints, is the foundation of the proposed methodology. A platform-based design approach is used to balance costs and time-to-market in relation to performance and functionality constraints. It is concluded that the proposed methodology significantly reduces design time and costs, as well as leading to better software modularity and reliability

    Principles in Patterns (PiP) : Institutional Approaches to Curriculum Design Institutional Story

    The principal outputs of the PiP Project surround the Course and Class Approval (C-CAP) system. This web-based system built on Microsoft SharePoint addresses and resolves many of the issues identified by the project. Generally well received by both academic and support staff, the system provides personalised views, adaptive forms and contextualised support for all phases of the approval process. Although the system deliberately encapsulates and facilitates existing approval processes thus achieving buy-in, it is already achieving significant improvements over the previous processes, not only in reducing the administrative overheads but also in supporting curriculum design and academic quality. The system is now embedded across three faculties and is now considered by the University of Strathclyde to be a "core institutional service". Alongside the C-CAP system the PiP Project also cultivated a suite of approaches: an incremental systems development methodology; a structured and replicable evaluation approach, and; Strathclyde's Lean Approach to Efficiencies in Education Kit (SLEEK) business process improvement methodology Each is based on recognised formal techniques, providing the basis for a rigorous approach. This is contextualised within and adapted to the HE institutional context thus building the foundation not only for the project but ultimately for institution wide process improvement.     Optimisation of multimode waveguide platforms for optical chemical sensors and biosensors

    In this dissertation, a theoretical description of the operation of absorption and fluorescencebased optical chemical sensors employing planar multimode waveguides is developed. Using this theory, the design issues that should be taken into account in order to fabricate such sensor systems with an optimised performance are addressed and discussed in detail. Prototype sensor systems whose fabrication was based on these optimised design parameters are described and the experimental results of their performance are presented. The key issues dealt with in the dissertation are: 1. Development of a rigorous electromagnetic theory of operation of absorption-based optical chemical sensors employing multimode waveguides coated with a thin absorbing layer. 2. Application of this theory to the development of sensor systems with optimised performance. 3. Fabrication and experimental testing of a compact and portable absorption-based optical chemical sensor. 4. Development and experimental verification of a theory of radiation of fluorescent molecules embedded in a planar multilayer structure. 5. Application of this theory to the design of configurations with optimised fluorescence capture efficiency. Fabrication and experimental testing of these structures. 6. Development and testing of the experimental set-up facilitating the collection of a surfacegenerated fluorescence excited by a direct illumination

    Research versus practice in quality improvement? Understanding how we can bridge the gap

    The gap between implementers and researchers of quality improvement (QI) has hampered the degree and speed of change needed to reduce avoidable suffering and harm in health care. Underlying causes of this gap include differences in goals and incentives, preferred methodologies, level and types of evidence prioritized and targeted audiences. The Salzburg Global Seminar on 'Better Health Care: How do we learn about improvement?' brought together researchers, policy makers, funders, implementers, evaluators from low-, middle- and high-income countries to explore how to increase the impact of QI. In this paper, we describe some of the reasons for this gap and offer suggestions to better bridge the chasm between researchers and implementers. Effectively bridging this gap can increase the generalizability of QI interventions, accelerate the spread of effective approaches while also strengthening the local work of implementers.
