    A Reformed Natural Theology?

    Get PDF
This paper aims to counter the recent opinion that there is a peculiar epistemology in the reformed Church which made it negative to natural theology. First, it is shown that there was an early and unanimous adoption of natural theology as the culmination of physics and the beginning of metaphysics by the sixteenth and seventeenth century philosophers of good standing in the reformed Church. Second, it is argued that natural theology cannot be based on revelation, should not assume a peculiar analysis of knowledge and must not pass over demonstration

When conventional procedures are no longer the rule for application: design as a discipline opens up to new possibilities

This paper discusses the development of the prototype application ‘LabanAssist’. It looks at the design rationale used for the creation of what is fundamentally a system for recording dance knowledge on a score, as identifiable and replicable signs and symbols. A system made necessary because the conventions of other established disciplines, such as engineering and computer science practices, were no longer considered to be effective alone, in facilitating the production of well-designed cultural artefacts (Calvert, Fox, Ryman, & Wilke, 2005; Ebenreuter, 2005). It is important to ask how can we understand design as a discipline amongst other fields of study with longstanding conventions and traditions and if the discipline of design offers effective ways of thinking about the creation and art of making products or services for the enhancement of the human experience? Is design a discipline because it adheres to existing and established rules of interdisciplinary knowledge from which it draws, or is it a discipline in its own right that as a significant field of intellectual development utilizes interdisciplinary knowledge as a basis for creativity and invention?” While there is no simple answer to these questions, the design approach adopted for the development of the prototype application ‘LabanAssist’ offers a working example in which the central theme of grammar, or more particularly the rules of a language, depart from the conventional use for its practical application. This application is one in which a literal understanding of grammar is no longer seen as an adequate basis for the generation of dance knowledge expressed via symbolic writing systems. Instead, this research focuses on the way in which the figurative aspects of language can be represented in the design of an interface to orient user thinking and facilitate the generation of diverse movement compositions. Walter Starkie’s Spanish Raggle-Taggle (1934) and Don Gypsy (1936)

In the eighteenth and nineteeth centuries, a tendency emerged among English-speaking authors to describe Spain from a romantic point of view, which derived in Spanish Orientalism. The aim of this B. A. Thesis is to demonstrate that, in the books Spanish Raggle-Taggle and Don Gypsy, Walter Starkie (a Hispanist born in Dublin, 1894-1976) is a chronicler instead of an Orientalist. To do this, I will first contextualize this travel literature to see if Starkie can fit or not into one of the three types of Orientalism I propose, and then delve into knowing the author himself to end with the analysis of the two works. As a result, we can conclude that, in Spanish Raggle-Taggle and Don Gypsy, there are more features of a chronicler than of an orientalist writer.

A Modern Polytheism? Nietzsche and James

Polytheism is a strange view to hold in modernity. Connected as it is in the popular imagination with archaic, animistic, magical, prescientific systems of thought, we don’t hesitate much before casting it into the dustbin of history. Even if we are not monotheists, we are likely to think of monotheism as the obviously more plausible position. The traditional arguments for the existence of God, which have been enormously influential in Western philosophy of religion, do not necessarily rule out polytheism but they are clearly formulated with monotheism in mind. While there could be multiple first causes, intelligent designers, or beings than which nothing greater can be conceived, the simplest and most natural..

    Get PDF

Abstract: The study of the ideas of Ibn Sînâ and Richard Swinburne as the pioneers of Islamic philosophy and the West philosophy, and on the other hand, the existing scholastic and ideological differences, is something that can help us to become more familiar with the thoughts of these philosophers and intellectual differences and similarities. In this research, with the analytical method and using the necessary documents, the nature, types, and solutions of evil in the thought of Ibn Sînâ and Swinburne are examined, and also the two philosophers’ thoughts about evil are compared. Both philosophers have considered the existence of evil not in contradiction with the divine attributes, but it is necessary for the acquisition of good, the minimum existence of which is necessary for the best system of creation. Keywords: evil, Ibn Sînâ, Richard Swinburne, Divine attributes, world of creatio

Rupert C. W. Bunny and the Pre-Raphaelite Aesthetic.

This article examines the work of the Australian artist, Rupert Bunny (1864-1947), who lived in France for nearly half a century and whose career is usually associated with French art. However, it can be argued that, during the decades of the 1880s and 1890s, Bunny’s paintings shared several aspects of the Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic, including literary sources (such as Anna Jameson and Algernon C. Swinburne) and also visual motifs and facial types, finding in D. G. Rossetti’s images and, particularly, the late work of Edward Burne-Jones, a rich source of inspiration. Through a focused study of Bunny’s religious subjects—particularly his depiction of the lives of the female saints Cecilia, Dorothy and Catherine—the clear influence of these Pre-Raphaelites can be identified.  The article concludes with Bunny's sketches and paintings of the Virgin Mary, which show his admiration of the work of Fra Angelico, and his particular debt to Rossetti and the medievalism of the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
