The Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is considered to be an improved solution for applying flexible control and operation recently in the network. Its characteristics include centralized management, global view, as well as fast adjustment and adaptation. Many experimental and research networks have already migrated to the SDN-enabled architecture. As the global network continues to grow in a fast pace, how to use SDN to improve the networking fields becomes a popular topic in research. One of the interesting topics is to enable routing exchanges among the SDN-enabled network and production networks. However, considering that many production networks are still operated on legacy architecture, the enabled SDN routing functionalities have to support hybrid mode in operation. In this paper, we propose a routing exchange mechanism by enabling reactive BGP peering actions among the SDN and legacy network components. The results of experiments show that our SDN controller is able to mask as an Autonomous System (AS) to exchange routing information with other BGP routers

Implementing quality of service for the software defined networking enabled future internet

Achieving ever-growing Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for business customers is a major concern over the current Internet. However, presently, its architecture and infrastructures are inflexible to meet the demand of increased QoS requirements. OpenFlow, OF-Config (OpenFlow Configuration and Management protocol), and OVSDB (Open vSwitch Database Management protocol) protocols are well-known software defined networking (SDN) technologies for the Future Internet, enabling flexibility by decoupling the control plane from networking devices. In this paper, we propose a QoS framework using the SDN technologies and test the framework in failure-conditions using single and multiple autonomous system scenarios of the current Internet. We show that an effectively high QoS can be achieved for business customers using our framework

Design and Implementation of Monitoring Schemes for Software-Defined Routing over a Federated Multi-domain SDN Testbed

Emerging Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has been widely affecting most networking fields. However, the real-world SDN application for inter-domain routing management is still limited since the routing exchange among wide-area networks is quite complicate due to the extreme scale of global Internet connectivity. Several SDN-leveraged routing ideas are being proposed to improve the routing exchange among wide-area networks. Thus, in this paper, an on-going experience for experimenting and validating the inter-domain routing proposals over OF@TEIN federated testbed in Asia is shared. By focusing on the design and implementation of monitoring deployment for visibility support, we try to identify practical key points and provide improved monitoring for validating the performance and anomaly of the exchange. Other design considerations are also discussed together with possible future research directions

    λBGP:Rethinking BGP programmability

    Get PDF
BGP has long been the de-facto control plane protocol for inter-network connectivity. Although initially designed to provide best-effort routing between ASes, the evolution of Internet services has created a demand for more complex control functionalities using the protocol. At the heart of this challenge lies the static nature of configuration mechanisms and the limited programmability of existing BGP speakers. Meanwhile, the SDN paradigm has demonstrated that open and generic network control APIs can greatly improve network functionality and seamlessly enable greater flexibility in network management. In this paper, we argue that BGP speaking systems can and should provide an open and rich control and configuration mechanism, in order to address modern era network control requirements. Towards this goal, we present λbgp, a modular and extensible BGP framework written in Haskell. The framework offers an extensible integration model for reactive BGP control that remains backward compatible with existing BGP standards and allows network managers to define route processing policies using a high-level language and to dynamically inject information sources into the path selection logic. Using a high-performance BGP traffic generator, we demonstrate that λbgp offers performance comparable to production BGP speakers, while dynamic AS route processing policies can be written in just a few lines of code

Uncertainty-driven Ensemble Forecasting of QoS in Software Defined Networks

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the key technology for combining networking and Cloud solutions to provide novel applications. SDN offers a number of advantages as the existing resources can be virtualized and orchestrated to provide new services to the end users. Such a technology should be accompanied by powerful mechanisms that ensure the end-to-end quality of service at high levels, thus, enabling support for complex applications that satisfy end users needs. In this paper, we propose an intelligent mechanism that agglomerates the benefits of SDNs with real-time “Big Data” forecasting analytics. The proposed mechanism, as part of the SDN controller, supports predictive intelligence by monitoring a set of network performance parameters, forecasting their future values, and deriving indications on potential service quality violations. By treating the performance measurements as time-series, our mechanism employs a novel ensemble forecasting methodology to estimate their future values. Such predictions are fed to a Type-2 Fuzzy Logic system to deliver, in real-time, decisions related to service quality violations. Such decisions proactively assist the SDN controller for providing the best possible orchestration of the virtualized resources. We evaluate the proposed mechanism w.r.t. precision and recall metrics over synthetic data

Dynamic Metric OSPF-Based Routing Protocol for Software Defined Networks

[EN] Routing protocols are needed in networking to find the optimal path to reach the destination. However, networks are changing both their use finality and their technology. Paradigms like Software Defined Networks (SDNs) introduce the possibility and the necessity to improve the routing protocols. In this paper, a modification of the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol is proposed in order to allow the protocol to change the metric calculation dynamically according to the network requirements. Experiments, which compare our proposal against the OSPF protocol, are performed in five different scenarios. In these scenarios, the performance of the multimedia traffic has been increased 33% in terms of bandwidth utilization, 80% of loss rate reduction and delay reduction on VoIP communications. This work has been partially supported by the "Ministerio de Educacion, Cultura y Deporte", through the "Ayudas para contratos predoctorales de Formacion del Profesorado Universitario FPU (Convocatoria 2015)".
