    User kansei modeling and eco-design

    The use of day-to-day life artifacts is a key phase in the lifecycle of products. Indeed it has a great impact on our environment. User centered methods are not yet taken into account in eco-design approaches. These methods are being developed in two ways, by building new user models encompassing complex dimensions such as Kansei and experience, including values and moods, and by integrating the user himself in the design process. This paper deals with setting-up a new theoretical framework associating user-centered design advanced approaches such as experience design, Kansei studies, or participative design and eco-design methods. The final goal is to support product design by providing some guidelines according to environmental issues linked to the users and their abilities

    Towards a kansei-based user modeling methodology for eco-design

    We propose here to highlight the benefits of building a framework linking Kansei Design (KD), User Centered Design (UCD) and Eco-design, as the correlation between these fields is barely explored in research at the current time. Therefore, we believe Kansei Design could serve the goal of achieving more sustainable products by setting up an accurate understanding of the user in terms of ecological awareness, and consequently enhancing performance in the Eco-design process. In the same way, we will consider the means-end chain approach inspired from marketing research, as it is useful for identifying ecological values, mapping associated functions and defining suitable design solutions. Information gathered will serve as entry data for conducting scenario-based design, and supporting the development of an Eco-friendly User Centered Design methodology (EcoUCD).ANR-ECOUS

    The Role of Kansei Engineering in Influencing Overall Satisfaction and Behavioral Intention in Service Encounters

    Customers today concern themselves more on fulfilling their emotional needs rather than rationales and functionalities. In dealing with customer emotions in products/services, Kansei Engineering (KE) is applied. A comprehensive case study in luxury hotels was conducted. Eighty one Indonesian, 75 Singaporean, and 74 Japanese tourists participated in this survey. It aims to investigate the relationships among constructs during service encounter process. The finding shows that emotions (affective process) play a significant role as a complement to cognitive process in influencing customer satisfaction.     Exploring relationships between touch perception and surface physical properties

    This paper reports a study of materials for confectionery packaging. The aim was to explore the touch perceptions of textures and identify their relationships with the surfaces' physical properties. Thirty-seven tactile textures were tested including 22 cardboards, nine flexible materials and six laminate boards. Semantic differential questionnaires were administered to assess responses to touching the textures against six word pairs: warm-cold, slippery-sticky, smooth,-rough, hard-soft, bumpy-flat, and wet-dry. Four physical measurements were conducted to characterize the surfaces' roughness, compliance, friction, and the rate of cooling of an artificial finger when touching the surface. Correlation and regression analyses were carried out to identify the relationships between the people's responses and the physical measurements. Results show that touch perception is often associated with more than one physical property, and the strength and form of the combined contribution can be represented by a regression model. © 2009 Chen, Shao, Barnes, Childs, & Henson

    Customer perception of switch-feel in luxury sports utility vehicles

    Successful new product introduction requires that product characteristics relate to the customer on functional, emotional, aesthetic and cultural levels. As a part of research into automotive human machine interfaces (HMI), this paper describes holistic customer research carried out to investigate how the haptics of switches in luxury sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are perceived by customers. The application of these techniques, including an initial proposal for objective specifications, is addressed within the broader new product introduction context, and benefits described. One-hundred and one customers of SUVs assessed the feel of automotive push switches, completing the tasks both in, and out of vehicles to investigate the effect of context. Using the semantic differential technique, hedonic testing, and content analysis of customers’ verbatim comments, a holistic picture has been built up of what influences the haptic experience. It was found that customers were able to partially discriminate differences in switch-feel, alongside considerations of visual appearance, image, and usability. Three factors named ‘Affective’, ‘Robustness and Precision’, and ‘Silkiness’ explained 61% of the variance in a principle components analysis. Correlations of the factors with acceptance scores were 0.505, 0.371, and 0.168, respectively

    Daily Worker Evaluation Model for SME-scale Food Production System Using Kansei Engineering and Artificial Neural Network

    AbstractThis paper highlighted a daily worker evaluation model for small medium-scale food production system. The model consist of worker capacity assessment and worker performance evaluation sub-models. The model measures the relationship between Total Mood Disturbance (TMD), heart rate of worker and workplace parameters using Kansei Engineering approach.However, the rapid measurement of TMD is difficult and full of bias since using the paper-based questionnaire of Profile of Mood States (POMS). Therefore, a rapid measurement method was developed using Artificial Neural Network to support the application of daily evaluation model. The inputs of the model were heart rate, workplace temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and noise level, which were measured before and after working. The output was TMD score.The training and inspection data for ANN was collected from workers of food production system as Tempe, Bakpia, Fish Chips and Crackers industries in Yogyakarta Special Region.ANN model were tested successfully predicted TMD score using back-propagation supervised learning method. The trained ANN model generated satisfied root mean square error value. ANN model is possible to substitute conventional data acquisition of POMS. The daily evaluation model is applicable to assist industrial management for providing the appropriate worker assignment for shift schedulling and environmental set point for the workplace comfortability

    Kansei Engineering for Quantification of Indigenous Knowledges in Agro-industrial Technology

    The term of indigenous knowledge refers to specific local knowledge in consumer/user which should be incorporated by agro-industry to compete in a globalized worlds. This research highlighted Kansei Engineering as a potential approach to quantify indigenous knowledge in agro-industrial technology. The research objectives were: 1) To review the quantification tools of indigenous knowledges in agro-industrial technology using Kansei Engineering; 2) To characterize indigenous knowledges in Indonesian agro-industry. Case study was demonstrated in Indonesian food product, services and ergonomic technology. Quantification was characterized using widely developed quantification tools for indigenous knowledges. The research results concluded some indigenous knowledges which could be incorporated in indigenous knowledge-based innovations.     Application of Kansei Engineering Method in the development of e-Government job portals

    Nowadays, companies often find it difficult to predict consumers’ needs and requirements and have been looking for ways to quantify customers’ impression on their products. Kansei Engineering (KE) is a method originated from Japan that could be used in achieving the companies’ goal. This method is often used in humanoriented product development to generate products with improved economic value. In this study, Kansei Engineering is applied in website development. This study reveals that e-government websites in Malaysia have lower usability values among the others website domains. There is a significant potential of improving the usability value of the e-Government job portals by implementing a effective usability testing methodology on them. This study aimed to use usability as a testing method by applying Kansei Engineering in the evaluation of e-Government job portals in Malaysia. This study proposes to improve the quality of job-seeking website managed by Malaysia government by measuring the user experience of the website users. The research is aimed to address the dominant factors that affect the impression of a user on the website as well as to compare the design elements of other sample job-seeking websites. Methodologies devised from the investigation are based on proven and existing approaches by other researchers of the same field. Thus, recommendations obtained and analysis of the results shall be useful to guide the improvement of existing job portals to better serve the good cause of its existence
