Formal specification of C++ class interfaces for software reuse
Argues that to provide better support for software reuse, object-oriented programming languages must be supplemented with a specification language which can provide precise semantic specifications of reusable components
IRS II: a framework and infrastructure for semantic web services
In this paper we describe IRS–II (Internet Reasoning Service) a framework and implemented infrastructure, whose main goal is to support the publication, location, composition and execution of heterogeneous web services, augmented with semantic descriptions of their functionalities. IRS–II has three main classes of features which distinguish it from other work on semantic web services. Firstly, it supports one-click publishing of standalone software: IRS–II automatically creates the appropriate wrappers, given pointers to the standalone code. Secondly, it explicitly distinguishes between tasks (what to do) and methods (how to achieve tasks) and as a result supports capability-driven service invocation; flexible mappings between services and problem specifications; and dynamic, knowledge-based service selection. Finally, IRS–II services are web service compatible – standard web services can be trivially published through the IRS–II and any IRS–II service automatically appears as a standard web service to other web service infrastructures. In the paper we illustrate the main functionalities of IRS–II through a scenario involving a distributed application in the healthcare domain
Semantic Component Composition
Building complex software systems necessitates the use of component-based
architectures. In theory, of the set of components needed for a design, only
some small portion of them are "custom"; the rest are reused or refactored
existing pieces of software. Unfortunately, this is an idealized situation.
Just because two components should work together does not mean that they will
work together.
The "glue" that holds components together is not just technology. The
contracts that bind complex systems together implicitly define more than their
explicit type. These "conceptual contracts" describe essential aspects of
extra-system semantics: e.g., object models, type systems, data representation,
interface action semantics, legal and contractual obligations, and more.
Designers and developers spend inordinate amounts of time technologically
duct-taping systems to fulfill these conceptual contracts because system-wide
semantics have not been rigorously characterized or codified. This paper
describes a formal characterization of the problem and discusses an initial

A conceptual model for semantically-based e-government portals
Issues of semantic interoperability and service integration for e-government portals are the domain of interest of the present paper. We propose a Conceptual Model for One-Stop e-Government Portals based on the Semantic Web Service technology. We describe our research into building the three basic ontologies and their integration with standard ontologies. The result is a project-independent reusable model. At the same time, we outline a simple methodology for applying the proposed conceptual model into a specific scenario
A Flexible Shallow Approach to Text Generation
In order to support the efficient development of NL generation systems, two
orthogonal methods are currently pursued with emphasis: (1) reusable, general,
and linguistically motivated surface realization components, and (2) simple,
task-oriented template-based techniques. In this paper we argue that, from an
application-oriented perspective, the benefits of both are still limited. In
order to improve this situation, we suggest and evaluate shallow generation
methods associated with increased flexibility. We advise a close connection
between domain-motivated and linguistic ontologies that supports the quick
adaptation to new tasks and domains, rather than the reuse of general
resources. Our method is especially designed for generating reports with

Semantic annotation, publication, and discovery of Java software components: an integrated approach
Component-based software development has matured into standard practice in software engineering. Among the advantages of reusing software modules are lower costs, faster development, more manageable code, increased productivity, and improved software quality. As the number of available software components has grown, so has the need for effective component search and retrieval. Traditional search approaches, such as keyword matching, have proved ineffective when applied to software components. Applying a semantically- enhanced approach to component classification, publication, and discovery can greatly increase the efficiency of searching and retrieving software components. This has been already applied in the context of Web technologies, and Web services in particular, in the frame of Semantic Web Services research. This paper examines the similarities between software components and Web services and adapts an existing Semantic Web Service publication and discovery solution into a software component annotation and discovery tool which is implemented as an Eclipse plug-in
