Retorno a trazos de mil historias [A Return to the Traces of a Thousand Stories]

The online project http://historyofaboriginalsydney.edu.au, now based at the University of Western Sydney, takes the educational and digital initiatives of today in a new direction. Dividing the city of Sydney into six geographic regions, we created a site based on the history of the Aborigines of Sydney since the invasion by the English colonisers. The site incorporates new forms of tagging, time line and digital maping to present multiple pathways of information in textual, video and photographic form. After seven years of investigation, we can offer our website balanced between unearthing lost knowledge and discovering new sources of information. We have incorporated all these into the site while exploring the potential for digital mapping and animation for purposes both of education and research. After carefully consulting professional Aboriginal educational groups, we believe that we have created a digital Indigenous history of Sydney, while at the same time returning to the Aborigines the history of which they have been deprived for so long.([10]

Microgeographies: Galician narratives of place (2004-2012)

This dissertation analyzes representations of place in works of Galician-language narrative fiction published between 2004 and 2012: A intervención by Teresa Moure, Todo é silencio by Manuel Rivas, Ser ou non by Xurxo Borrazás, Dime algo sucio and Historias de Oregón by Diego Ameixeiras, and En vías de extinción by María Reimóndez. This study begins from the hypothesis that places, far from being unitary or stable entities, are constituted through discourses and practices and can best be analyzed as sites of articulation, spaces of negotiation, and unfolding sets of relations (Lepofsky, following Amin and Thrift; Massey, Allen et al.). It argues that narrative fiction often works against homogenizing discourses of place by creating microgeographies, or aestheticized representations of the multiple ways in which places are lived, experienced, and contested. By analyzing these microgeographies, this dissertation contributes to the understanding of how topics such as local knowledge, the rural-urban divide, community, and home are being imagined in contemporary Galician cultural production. This emphasis on small-scale geographies serves as point of entry into a larger discussion of the relationship between the local and the global, between agency and structure. In analyzing narrative representations of relatively small spaces--from the body itself, to a building, a garden, a village, an urban neighborhood--this dissertation describes some of the ways in which the meaning of places derives from the contact (and conflict) between the individual and the forces that order social life, from the family to local politics, from linguistic hegemony to global capitalism.Doctor of Philosoph

HACIA UNA HISTORIA DE LO IMPOSIBLE: LA REVOLUCIÓN HAITIANA Y EL "LIBRO DE PINTURAS" DE JOSÉ ANTONIO APONTE.

In its first two sections, this dissertation offers a discussion of contemporary debates about the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), its relation to Western Modernity, and its immediate consequences in the Caribbean of the early 19th century. The argument begins with an extended critique of Modernity Disavowed (2004) and its theorizations of cultural "hybridity" and "alternative modernities" as a model for understanding the Revolution and the possibilities it opens up. Fischer's perspective does not give sufficient attention to the political and cultural practices of the insurgent masses of slaves. To do so requires criticizing the prevalent distinctions between tradition and modernity or between the "pre-political" and "the political" in the most influential historical representations of the Revolution (CLR James, Genovese, Buck-Morss, etc). Following Alain Badiou's reflection on the notion of "event", the second part also interrogates the underlying historicism of some of these representations. These two sections function as a general background for a third, final one, which focuses on a historical document that is one of the most important expressions of the social imaginaries created by the Haitian Revolution in the Caribbean. This document is the record of the interrogation of José Antonio Aponte, a free black artisan, who lived and worked in Havana between the final decades of 18th century, and the first years of the 19th who was accused, in 1812, of being the mastermind behind a conspiracy against slavery and colonialism in Cuba. The center of the interrogation by the authorities was a cultural artifact of his own described as a "libro de pinturas" or book of paintings. This artifact -regarded by the authorities as the main evidence against Aponte- was clearly influenced by the Haitian Revolution and contained a vast amount of images that seems to be a kind of visual history of Africans and African descendants, including the leaders of the Haitian Revolution Toussaint, Christophe and Dessalines. Part 3 studies the description of some these images as a form of "political theology" concerned with articulating a genealogy for a form of statehood, suspended problematically between the teleology of modernity and a different, non-Western form, of historical teleology

    The Border of Lights Reader

    Get PDF
Border of Lights, a volunteer collective, returns each October to Dominican-Haitian border towns to bear witness to the 1937 Haitian Massacre ordered by Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. This crime against humanity has never been acknowledged by the Dominican government and no memorial exists for its victims. A multimodal, multi-vocal space for activists, artists, scholars, and others connected to the BOL movement, The Border of Lights Reader provides an alternative to the dominant narrative that positions Dominicans and Haitians as eternal adversaries and ignores cross-border and collaborative histories. This innovative anthology asks large-scale, universal questions regarding historical memory and revisionism that countries around the world grapple with today

    Get PDF
