Concurrent Lexicalized Dependency Parsing: The ParseTalk Model
A grammar model for concurrent, object-oriented natural language parsing is
introduced. Complete lexical distribution of grammatical knowledge is achieved
building upon the head-oriented notions of valency and dependency, while
inheritance mechanisms are used to capture lexical generalizations. The
underlying concurrent computation model relies upon the actor paradigm. We
consider message passing protocols for establishing dependency relations and

Concurrent Lexicalized Dependency Parsing: A Behavioral View on ParseTalk Events
The behavioral specification of an object-oriented grammar model is
considered. The model is based on full lexicalization, head-orientation via
valency constraints and dependency relations, inheritance as a means for
non-redundant lexicon specification, and concurrency of computation. The
computation model relies upon the actor paradigm, with concurrency entering
through asynchronous message passing between actors. In particular, we here
elaborate on principles of how the global behavior of a lexically distributed
grammar and its corresponding parser can be specified in terms of event type

Message-Passing Protocols for Real-World Parsing -- An Object-Oriented Model and its Preliminary Evaluation
We argue for a performance-based design of natural language grammars and
their associated parsers in order to meet the constraints imposed by real-world
NLP. Our approach incorporates declarative and procedural knowledge about
language and language use within an object-oriented specification framework. We
discuss several message-passing protocols for parsing and provide reasons for
sacrificing completeness of the parse in favor of efficiency based on a

Anaphor resolution and the scope of syntactic constraints
An anaphor resolution algorithm is presented which relies on a combination of strategies for narrowing down and selecting from antecedent sets for re exive pronouns, nonre exive pronouns, and common nouns. The work focuses on syntactic restrictions which are derived from Chomsky's Binding Theory. It is discussed how these constraints can be incorporated adequately in an anaphor resolution algorithm. Moreover, by showing that pragmatic inferences may be necessary, the limits of syntactic restrictions are elucidated
GATE -- an Environment to Support Research and Development in Natural Language Engineering
We describe a software environment to support research and development in natural language (NL) engineering. This environment -- GATE (General Architecture for Text Engineering) -- aims to advance research in the area of machine processing of natural languages by providing a software infrastructure on top of which heterogeneous NL component modules may be evaluated and refined individually or may be combined into larger application systems. Thus, GATE aims to support both researchers and developers working on component technologies (e.g. parsing, tagging, morphological analysis) and those working on developing end-user applications (e.g. information extraction, text summarisation, document generation, machine translation, and second language learning). GATE will promote reuse of component technology, permit specialisation and collaboration in large-scale projects, and allow for the comparison and evaluation of alternative technologies. Parallel parsing made practical
The property of local parsability allows to parse inputs through inspecting only a bounded-length string around the current token. This in turn enables the construction of a scalable, data-parallel parsing algorithm, which is presented in this work. Such an algorithm is easily amenable to be automatically generated via a parser generator tool, which was realized, and is also presented in the following. Furthermore, to complete the framework of a parallel input analysis, a parallel scanner can also combined with the parser. To prove the practicality of a parallel lexing and parsing approach, we report the results of the adaptation of JSON and Lua to a form fit for parallel parsing (i.e. an operator-precedence grammar) through simple grammar changes and scanning transformations. The approach is validated with performance figures from both high performance and embedded multicore platforms, obtained analyzing real-world inputs as a test-bench. The results show that our approach matches or dominates the performances of production-grade LR parsers in sequential execution, and achieves significant speedups and good scaling on multi-core machines. The work is concluded by a broad and critical survey of the past work on parallel parsing and future directions on the integration with semantic analysis and incremental parsing
Incremental Centering and Center Ambiguity
In this paper, we present a model of anaphor resolution within the framework
of the centering model. The consideration of an incremental processing mode
introduces the need to manage structural ambiguity at the center level. Hence,
the centering framework is further refined to account for local and global
parsing ambiguities which propagate up to the level of center representations,

On Left and Right Dislocation: A Dynamic Perspective
The paper argues that by modelling the incremental and left-right process of interpretation as a process of growth of logical form (representing logical forms as trees), an integrated typology of left-dislocation and right-dislocation phenomena becomes available, bringing out not merely the similarities between these types of phenomena, but also their asymmetry. The data covered include hanging topic left dislocation, clitic left dislocation, left dislocation, pronoun doubling, expletives, extraposition, and right node raising, with each set of data analysed in terms of general principles of tree growth. In the light of the success in providing a characterisation of the asymmetry between left and right periphery phenomena, a result not achieved in more wellknown formalisms, the paper concludes that grammar formalisms should model the dynamics of language processing in time.Articl
