    Sport-Related Injuries in Canadian Interuniversity Athletics: A Descriptive Epidemiologic Analysis of Knee Injuries, 2014-2017

    The purpose of this study was to identify and establish the extent of sport-related injury in Canadian university varsity athletics, focusing on knee injury and significant sport injury. Of the SRIs reported, 20% were significant in nature and 23.2% were knee injuries. A larger percentage of knee SRIs were significant compared non-knee SRIs. Those suffering a knee injury were 4.5 times more likely to suffer a significant injury than those afflicted with non-knee injuries. Mens volleyball athletes are two times more likely to suffer a knee injury, once controlled for sport group. Once controlled for sport, mens hockey athletes are 2.3 times more likely to suffer a significant injury than any other sport (Table 4). Mens basketball has the highest rate of injury (3.32 per athlete) during this reporting period and football has the highest rate of significant knee injury at 0.27 per athlete (Table 1)

    Introducción.La comprensión lectora es una habilidad cognitiva compleja que se ha asocia-do a procesos ejecutivoscomola memoria de trabajo (MT) y la inhibición. Dado que el desa-rrollo de estas habilidades continúa hasta la adolescenciatardía, esta investigación propone estudiar el rol que sobre los distintos niveles de rendimiento en comprensión lectora ejercen ambos procesosen adolescentes de dos franjas etarias.Método.Se evaluó el desempeño en comprensión de textos, MT,inhibición,fluidez lectora y habilidades verbales en 104 adolescentes (12/13 años n= 53; 17/18 años n= 51).Resultados.Se encontró que los desempeños en comprensión lectora, MTe inhibición pre-sentan incrementossignificativos según la edad. A su vez, la correlación parcial mostró que lacomprensión lectora se asocia a: habilidades verbales, MTe inhibición.Por último, las prue-bas de diferencia de grupos señalan que los estudiantes con alto y bajo rendimiento en com-prensión difieren significativamente en habilidades verbales y funcionamiento ejecutivo en la franja 12/13 años. En cambio, sólo difieren significativamente en habilidades verbales en la franja 17/18 años.Conclusión.La comprensión lectora, la MT y la inhibición mejoran durante la adolescencia. Sin embargo, la relación entre estas habilidades difiere según el momento etario considerado.Introduction.Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive skill that has been associated with executive functions such as working memory (WM) and inhibition. Given that the development of these abilities continues through late adolescence, this study seeks to explore the role that both processes play with respect to varying levels of reading comprehension performance in adolescents in two age groups.Method.We evaluated performance in the comprehension of texts, WM, inhibition, reading fluency and verbal skills in 104 adolescents (12/13 years of agen= 53; 17/18 years of agen= 51).Results.We found that reading comprehension performance, WM and inhibition increased significantly with age. Further, a partial correlation showed that reading comprehension is associated with: verbal skills, WM and inhibition. Lastly, group difference testing indicates that students with high and low comprehension performance differ significantly in verbal skills and executive functioning in the 12/13 age group. In the 17/18 age group, however, they only differed significantly in terms of verbal skills.Conclusion.Reading comprehension, WM and inhibition improve during adolescence.     Pressure Injury and Restraint Prevalence Surveys: Saving Time and Dollars for Patient Care by Automating Manual Chart Abstraction

    Bronson Healthcare Group performs quarterly pressure injury and restraint audits as part of the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI). The chart abstraction portion of the audit previously required nurses to manually abstract 31 data points. To save time and cost, we used Lean and PDSA process improvement tools to automate the chart abstraction portion of the audit, reducing the number of data points requiring manual abstraction to 2. We validated the automated abstraction by comparing it to abstractions done manually by the audit nurses. We found that an automated process has the potential to reduce the impact of human error inherent in manual abstraction

    Dynamic actions on bridge slabs due to heavy vehicle impact on roadside barriers

    The use of roadside safety barriers in Italy has changed in recent years: the number of installed devices has increased, and so have their stiffness and resistance. These changes were necessary because early barrier design was inadequate to contain and redirect heavy vehicles. The change in barrier design led to an increase in stiffness and resistance; consequently, the action transferred to the structure by the device increased. The need for resistance on the bridge slabs can be too high because the peculiar action of the roadside barriers was not adequately taken into account in the oldest bridge design codes. In addition, characterizing the actions transferred to the bridge slab is difficult because of the dynamic nature of vehicle impacts on roadside barriers. Given the impossibility of performing a full-scale laboratory test for every bridge deck, the use of computational mechanics applied to dynamic impact/interaction problems is one of the best ways to establish these actions in the project phase. Research was conducted into the use of a three-dimensional finite element model of the bridge slab-barrier-vehicle system to perform a numerical simulation of the impact, according to the procedure used for the roadside barrier homologation crash test, described in the European Standard EN 1317

    A research project conducted by the Office of the Chief Economist at the Inter-American Development Bank has found preliminary but compelling evidence that the budgetary institutions in Latin America have a significant bearing on fiscal results. The researchers have developed an index of budget institutional development, which measures the strength of budget institutions. The results suggest that strong institutions have an impact on fiscal performance.

    (Abridged) This is the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer 2018 book. It is intended as a concise reference guide to all aspects of the scientific and technical design of MSE, for the international astronomy and engineering communities, and related agencies. The current version is a status report of MSE's science goals and their practical implementation, following the System Conceptual Design Review, held in January 2018. MSE is a planned 10-m class, wide-field, optical and near-infrared facility, designed to enable transformative science, while filling a critical missing gap in the emerging international network of large-scale astronomical facilities. MSE is completely dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy of samples of between thousands and millions of astrophysical objects. It will lead the world in this arena, due to its unique design capabilities: it will boast a large (11.25 m) aperture and wide (1.52 sq. degree) field of view; it will have the capabilities to observe at a wide range of spectral resolutions, from R2500 to R40,000, with massive multiplexing (4332 spectra per exposure, with all spectral resolutions available at all times), and an on-target observing efficiency of more than 80%. MSE will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and is designed to excel at precision studies of faint astrophysical phenomena. It will also provide critical follow-up for multi-wavelength imaging surveys, such as those of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, Gaia, Euclid, the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope, the Square Kilometre Array, and the Next Generation Very Large Array.Comment: 5 chapters, 160 pages, 107 figure

    The role of working memory sub-components in food choice and dieting success

    Evidence suggests a role for self-reported working memory (WM) in self-reported food intake, but it is not known which WM sub-components are involved. It is also important to consider how individual differences in dietary restraint and disinhibition influence WM and the impact of this on food choice. The current study assessed the relationship between WM sub-components and food choice, using computerised measures of WM sub-components and a direct assessment of food intake. The role of dieting success (measured by restraint and disinhibition) as a distal predictor of food choice that influences food choices via WM, and the role of WM more generally in dieting success were investigated. Female undergraduate students (N = 117, mean age: 18.9 years, mean BMI: 21.6 kg/m2) completed computer tasks assessing three components of WM (updating, phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad) and a snack food taste-test. Greater visuospatial WM span was associated with a higher (lower) percentage of food intake that was low (high) energy dense. It was also found that unsuccessful dieters (high restraint, high disinhibition) had poorer visuospatial WM span and consumed a lower (higher) percentage of low (high) energy dense food. Visuospatial WM span significantly mediated the relationship between dieting success and percentage of low energy dense food intake. Further, dietary restraint was associated with poorer updating ability, irrespective of disinhibition. These findings suggest that better visuospatial WM is associated with a greater (reduced) preference for low (high) energy dense foods, and that deficits in visuospatial WM may undermine dieting attempts. Future work should assess whether the ability to deal with food cravings mediates the relationship between visuospatial WM and dieting success and investigate how WM may influence the mechanisms underlying behavioural control

    surf3d: A 3-D finite-element program for the analysis of surface and corner cracks in solids subjected to mode-1 loadings

    A computer program, surf3d, that uses the 3D finite-element method to calculate the stress-intensity factors for surface, corner, and embedded cracks in finite-thickness plates with and without circular holes, was developed. The cracks are assumed to be either elliptic or part eliptic in shape. The computer program uses eight-noded hexahedral elements to model the solid. The program uses a skyline storage and solver. The stress-intensity factors are evaluated using the force method, the crack-opening displacement method, and the 3-D virtual crack closure methods. In the manual the input to and the output of the surf3d program are described. This manual also demonstrates the use of the program and describes the calculation of the stress-intensity factors. Several examples with sample data files are included with the manual. To facilitate modeling of the user's crack configuration and loading, a companion program (a preprocessor program) that generates the data for the surf3d called gensurf was also developed. The gensurf program is a three dimensional mesh generator program that requires minimal input and that builds a complete data file for surf3d.
