    Job Interactivity Using a Steering Service in an Interactive Grid Analysis Environment

    Grid computing has been dominated by the execution of batch jobs. Interactive data analysis is a new domain in the area of grid job execution. The Grid-Enabled Analysis Environment (GAE) attempts to address this in HEP grids by the use of a Steering Service. This service will provide physicists with the continuous feedback of their jobs and will provide them with the ability to control and steer the execution of their submitted jobs. It will enable them to move their jobs to different grid nodes when desired. The Steering Service will also act autonomously to make steering decisions on behalf of the user, attempting to optimize the execution of the job. This service will also ensure the optimal consumption of the Grid user's resource quota. The Steering Service will provide a web service interface defined by standard WSDL. In this paper we have discussed how the Steering Service will facilitate interactive remote analysis of data generated in Interactive Grid Analysis Environment

    Towards the 3D Web with Open Simulator

    Continuing advances and reduced costs in computational power, graphics processors and network bandwidth have led to 3D immersive multi-user virtual worlds becoming increasingly accessible while offering an improved and engaging Quality of Experience. At the same time the functionality of the World Wide Web continues to expand alongside the computing infrastructure it runs on and pages can now routinely accommodate many forms of interactive multimedia components as standard features - streaming video for example. Inevitably there is an emerging expectation that the Web will expand further to incorporate immersive 3D environments. This is exciting because humans are well adapted to operating in 3D environments and it is challenging because existing software and skill sets are focused around competencies in 2D Web applications. Open Simulator (OpenSim) is a freely available open source tool-kit that empowers users to create and deploy their own 3D environments in the same way that anyone can create and deploy a Web site. Its characteristics can be seen as a set of references as to how the 3D Web could be instantiated. This paper describes experiments carried out with OpenSim to better understand network and system issues, and presents experience in using OpenSim to develop and deliver applications for education and cultural heritage. The principal lesson is that more effort should be taken to be made to meet the needs of the target user community of the middleware development. Novel workflow strategies, in particular, should not be imposed on an existing community

    Real Time Animation of Virtual Humans: A Trade-off Between Naturalness and Control

    Virtual humans are employed in many interactive applications using 3D virtual environments, including (serious) games. The motion of such virtual humans should look realistic (or ‘natural’) and allow interaction with the surroundings and other (virtual) humans. Current animation techniques differ in the trade-off they offer between motion naturalness and the control that can be exerted over the motion. We show mechanisms to parametrize, combine (on different body parts) and concatenate motions generated by different animation techniques. We discuss several aspects of motion naturalness and show how it can be evaluated. We conclude by showing the promise of combinations of different animation paradigms to enhance both naturalness and control

    Multi-objective reinforcement learning for responsive grids

Seamless integration of grids into everyday use requires responsiveness, which can be provided by elastic Clouds, in the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) paradigm. This paper proposes a model-free resource provisioning strategy supporting both requirements. Provisioning is modeled as a continuous action-state space, multi-objective reinforcement learning (RL) problem, under realistic hypotheses; simple utility functions capture the high level goals of users, administrators, and shareholders. The model-free approach falls under the general program of autonomic computing, where the incremental learning of the value function associated with the RL model provides the so-called feedback loop. The RL model includes an approximation of the value function through an Echo State Network. Experimental validation on a real data-set from the EGEE grid shows that introducing a moderate level of elasticity is critical to ensure a high level of user satisfaction

    The evaluation of an active networking approach for supporting the QOS requirements of distributed virtual environments

    This paper describes work that is part of a more general investigation into how Active Network ideas might benefit large scale Distributed-Virtual-Environments (DVEs). Active Network approaches have been shown to offer improved solutions to the Scalable Reliable Multicast problem, and this is in a sense the lowest level at which Active Networks might benefit DVEs in supporting the peer-to-peer architectures considered most promising for large scale DVEs. To go further than this, the key benefit of Active Networking is the ability to take away from the application the need to understand the network topology and delegate the execution of certain actions, for example intelligent message pruning, to the network itself. The need to exchange geometrical information results in a type of traffic that can place occasional, short-lived, but heavy loads on the network. However, the Level of Detail (LoD) concept provides the potential to reduce this loading in certain circumstances. This paper introduces the performance modelling approach being used to evaluate the effectiveness of active network approaches for supporting DVEs and presents an evaluation of messages filtering mechanisms, which are based on the (LoD) concept. It describes the simulation experiment used to carry out the evaluation, presents its results and discusses plans for future work
