Multi-Target Prediction: A Unifying View on Problems and Methods

Multi-target prediction (MTP) is concerned with the simultaneous prediction of multiple target variables of diverse type. Due to its enormous application potential, it has developed into an active and rapidly expanding research field that combines several subfields of machine learning, including multivariate regression, multi-label classification, multi-task learning, dyadic prediction, zero-shot learning, network inference, and matrix completion. In this paper, we present a unifying view on MTP problems and methods. First, we formally discuss commonalities and differences between existing MTP problems. To this end, we introduce a general framework that covers the above subfields as special cases. As a second contribution, we provide a structured overview of MTP methods. This is accomplished by identifying a number of key properties, which distinguish such methods and determine their suitability for different types of problems. Finally, we also discuss a few challenges for future research

Lifelong Sequential Modeling with Personalized Memorization for User Response Prediction

User response prediction, which models the user preference w.r.t. the presented items, plays a key role in online services. With two-decade rapid development, nowadays the cumulated user behavior sequences on mature Internet service platforms have become extremely long since the user's first registration. Each user not only has intrinsic tastes, but also keeps changing her personal interests during lifetime. Hence, it is challenging to handle such lifelong sequential modeling for each individual user. Existing methodologies for sequential modeling are only capable of dealing with relatively recent user behaviors, which leaves huge space for modeling long-term especially lifelong sequential patterns to facilitate user modeling. Moreover, one user's behavior may be accounted for various previous behaviors within her whole online activity history, i.e., long-term dependency with multi-scale sequential patterns. In order to tackle these challenges, in this paper, we propose a Hierarchical Periodic Memory Network for lifelong sequential modeling with personalized memorization of sequential patterns for each user. The model also adopts a hierarchical and periodical updating mechanism to capture multi-scale sequential patterns of user interests while supporting the evolving user behavior logs. The experimental results over three large-scale real-world datasets have demonstrated the advantages of our proposed model with significant improvement in user response prediction performance against the state-of-the-arts.Comment: SIGIR 2019. Gap Filling in the Plant Kingdom---Trait Prediction Using Hierarchical Probabilistic Matrix Factorization

Plant traits are a key to understanding and predicting the adaptation of ecosystems to environmental changes, which motivates the TRY project aiming at constructing a global database for plant traits and becoming a standard resource for the ecological community. Despite its unprecedented coverage, a large percentage of missing data substantially constrains joint trait analysis. Meanwhile, the trait data is characterized by the hierarchical phylogenetic structure of the plant kingdom. While factorization based matrix completion techniques have been widely used to address the missing data problem, traditional matrix factorization methods are unable to leverage the phylogenetic structure. We propose hierarchical probabilistic matrix factorization (HPMF), which effectively uses hierarchical phylogenetic information for trait prediction. We demonstrate HPMF's high accuracy, effectiveness of incorporating hierarchical structure and ability to capture trait correlation through experiments.Comment: Appears in Proceedings of the 29th International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2012
