Hybrid resource provisioning for cloud workflows with malleable and rigid tasks

[EN] In cloud computing, reserved and on-demand instances are generally provided by service providers. Hybridization of the two alternatives can considerably save costs when renting resources from the cloud. However, it is a big challenge to determine the appropriate amount of reserved and on-demand resources in terms of users' requirements. In this paper, the workflow scheduling problem with both reserved and on-demand instances is considered. The objective is to minimize the total rental cost under deadline constrains. The considered problem is mathematically modeled. A multiple sequence-based earliest finish time method is proposed to construct schedules for the workflows. Four different rules are used to generate initial task allocation sequences. Types and quantities of resources are determined by a free time block-based schedule construction mechanism. New sequences are generated by a variable neighborhood search method. Experimental and statistical analyses and results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm algorithm generates considerable cost savings when compared to the algorithms with only on-demand or reserved instances.l This work is supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China (No. 2017YFB1400801), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Nos. 61572127, 61872077, 61832004) and Collaborative Innovation Center of Wireless Communications Technology. A review on various optimization techniques of resource provisioning in cloud computing

Cloud computing is the provision of IT resources (IaaS) on-demand using a pay as you go model over the internet. It is a broad and deep platform that helps customers builds sophisticated, scalable applications. To get the full benefits, research on a wide range of topics is needed. While resource over-provisioning can cost users more than necessary, resource under provisioning hurts the application performance. The cost effectiveness of cloud computing highly depends on how well the customer can optimize the cost of renting resources (VMs) from cloud providers. The issue of resource provisioning optimization from cloud-consumer potential is a complicated optimization issue, which includes much uncertainty parameters. There is a much research avenue available for solving this problem as it is in the real-world. Here, in this paper we provide details about various optimization techniques for resource provisioning

Price forecasting for spot instances in Cloud computing

[EN] Big data applications usually need to rent a large number of virtual machines from Cloud computing providers. As a result of the policies employed by Cloud providers, the prices of spot virtual machine instances behavior stochastically. Spot prices (prices of spot instances) fluctuate greatly or have multiple regimes. Choosing virtual machines according to trends in prices is helpful in decreasing the resource rental cost. Existing price prediction methods are unable to accurately predict prices in these environments. As a result, a dynamic-ARIMA and two markov regime-switching autoregressive model based forecasting methods have been developed in this paper. Experimental results show that the proposals are better than the existing MonthAR in most scenarios. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Allocation of Virtual Machines in Cloud Data Centers - A Survey of Problem Models and Optimization Algorithms

    Get PDF
Data centers in public, private, and hybrid cloud settings make it possible to provision virtual machines (VMs) with unprecedented flexibility. However, purchasing, operating, and maintaining the underlying physical resources incurs significant monetary costs and also environmental impact. Therefore, cloud providers must optimize the usage of physical resources by a careful allocation of VMs to hosts, continuously balancing between the conflicting requirements on performance and operational costs. In recent years, several algorithms have been proposed for this important optimization problem. Unfortunately, the proposed approaches are hardly comparable because of subtle differences in the used problem models. This paper surveys the used problem formulations and optimization algorithms, highlighting their strengths and limitations, also pointing out the areas that need further research in the future
