    The MobyDick Project: A Mobile Heterogeneous All-IP Architecture

Cracow, Poland: 17-20 June, 2001.This paper presents the current stage of an IP-based architecture for heterogeneous environments, covering UMTS-like W-CDMA wireless access technology, wireless and wired LANs, that is being developed under the aegis of the IST Moby Dick project. This architecture treats all transmission capabilities as basic physical and data-link layers, and attempts to replace all higher-level tasks by IP-based strategies. The proposed architecture incorporates aspects of mobile-IPv6, fast handover, AAA-control, and Quality of Service. The architecture allows for an optimised control on the radio link layer resources. The Moby dick architecture is currently under refinement for implementation on field trials. The services planned for trials are data transfer and voice-over-IP.Publicad

    Carrier Sense Random Packet CDMA Protocol in Dual-Channel Networks

    Code resource wastage is caused by the reason that many hopping frequency (FH) sequences are unused, which occurs under the condition that the number of the actual subnets needed for the tactical network is far smaller than the networking capacity of code division netÂŹworking. Dual-channel network (DCN), consisting of one single control channel and multiple data channels, can solve the code resource wastage effectively. To improve the anti-jamming capability of the control channel of DCN, code division multiple access (CDMA) technology was introduced, and a carrier sense random packet (CSRP) CDMA protocol based on random packet CDMA (RP-CDMA) was proposed. In CSRP-CDMA, we provide a carrier sensing random packet mechanism and a packet-segment acknowledgement policy. Furthermore, an analytical model was developed to evaluate the performance of CSRP-CDMA networks. In this model, the impacts of multi-access interference from both inter-clusters and intra-clusters were analyzed, and the mathematical expressions of packet transmission success probability, normalized network throughput and signal interference to noise ratio, were also derived. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that the normalized network throughput of CSRP-CDMA outperforms traditional RP-CDMA by 10%, which can guarantee the resource utilization efficiency of the control channel in DCNs

    Low-complexity medium access control protocols for QoS support in third-generation radio access networks

    One approach to maximizing the efficiency of medium access control (MAC) on the uplink in a future wideband code-division multiple-access (WCDMA)-based third-generation radio access network, and hence maximize spectral efficiency, is to employ a low-complexity distributed scheduling control approach. The maximization of spectral efficiency in third-generation radio access networks is complicated by the need to provide bandwidth-on-demand to diverse services characterized by diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements in an interference limited environment. However, the ability to exploit the full potential of resource allocation algorithms in third-generation radio access networks has been limited by the absence of a metric that captures the two-dimensional radio resource requirement, in terms of power and bandwidth, in the third-generation radio access network environment, where different users may have different signal-to-interference ratio requirements. This paper presents a novel resource metric as a solution to this fundamental problem. Also, a novel deadline-driven backoff procedure has been presented as the backoff scheme of the proposed distributed scheduling MAC protocols to enable the efficient support of services with QoS imposed delay constraints without the need for centralized scheduling. The main conclusion is that low-complexity distributed scheduling control strategies using overload avoidance/overload detection can be designed using the proposed resource metric to give near optimal performance and thus maintain a high spectral efficiency in third-generation radio access networks and that importantly overload detection is superior to overload avoidance

    Survey of End-to-End Mobile Network Measurement Testbeds, Tools, and Services

    Mobile (cellular) networks enable innovation, but can also stifle it and lead to user frustration when network performance falls below expectations. As mobile networks become the predominant method of Internet access, developer, research, network operator, and regulatory communities have taken an increased interest in measuring end-to-end mobile network performance to, among other goals, minimize negative impact on application responsiveness. In this survey we examine current approaches to end-to-end mobile network performance measurement, diagnosis, and application prototyping. We compare available tools and their shortcomings with respect to the needs of researchers, developers, regulators, and the public.     Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks with Quality-of-Service Constraints

    A game-theoretic model is proposed to study the cross-layer problem of joint power and rate control with quality of service (QoS) constraints in multiple-access networks. In the proposed game, each user seeks to choose its transmit power and rate in a distributed manner in order to maximize its own utility while satisfying its QoS requirements. The user's QoS constraints are specified in terms of the average source rate and an upper bound on the average delay where the delay includes both transmission and queuing delays. The utility function considered here measures energy efficiency and is particularly suitable for wireless networks with energy constraints. The Nash equilibrium solution for the proposed non-cooperative game is derived and a closed-form expression for the utility achieved at equilibrium is obtained. It is shown that the QoS requirements of a user translate into a "size" for the user which is an indication of the amount of network resources consumed by the user. Using this competitive multiuser framework, the tradeoffs among throughput, delay, network capacity and energy efficiency are studied. In addition, analytical expressions are given for users' delay profiles and the delay performance of the users at Nash equilibrium is quantified.Comment: Accpeted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Communication
