    Towards a style-specific basis for computational beat tracking

    Outlined in this paper are a number of sources of evidence, from psychological, ethnomusicological and engineering grounds, to suggest that current approaches to computational beat tracking are incomplete. It is contended that the degree to which cultural knowledge, that is, the specifics of style and associated learnt representational schema, underlie the human faculty of beat tracking has been severely underestimated. Difficulties in building general beat tracking solutions, which can provide both period and phase locking across a large corpus of styles, are highlighted. It is probable that no universal beat tracking model exists which does not utilise a switching model to recognise style and context prior to application

    Turbulence Transport in Rotor-Stator and Stator-Rotor Stages of Axial Flow Fans

    Turbulence analysis in turbomachines is a complex task. The combination of different turbulence sources and transport mechanisms poses the question of determining adequate metrics to quantify turbulence levels and provide insight into the flow structure and its evolution. Apart from experimental measurement techniques, numerical techniques arise as a useful tool to characterize this type of flow, especially hybrid LES techniques that allow a highly accurate description of the transport of turbulent structures, while turbulence generation at solid boundaries is addressed using RANS schemes. In this chapter, recent developments concerning numerical simulation of rotor-stator and stator-rotor interactions in low-speed axial fans using LES techniques are presented. A post-processing framework is introduced to segregate the deterministic and turbulent components of the unsteady flow, allowing an accurate description of both phenomena. Hence, turbulent transport over the different stage rows of the axial fan can be accurately addressed. Following, LES capacities to simulate turbulence transport mechanisms such as breaking-up of turbulent eddies, stretching and dissipation of vorticity or identification and convection of coherent vortices are discussed. The ability of LES computations to disclose flow turbulence in rotor-stator environments at off-design conditions is specially illustrated

    Trapped-Ion Cell with Improved DC Potential Harmonicity for FT-ICR MS

    The trapped-ion cell is a key component critical for optimal performance in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry (MS). To extend the performance of FT-ICR MS, we have developed a new cell design that is capable of generating a DC trapping potential which closely approaches that of an ideal Penning trap, i.e., a 3D axial quadrupolar potential distribution. The new cell design was built upon an open cylindrical geometry, supplemented with two pairs of cylindrical compensation segments. Electric potential calculations for trial cell geometries were aimed at minimizing spatial variations of the radial electric field divided by radius. The resulting cell proportions and compensation voltages delivered practically constant effective ion cyclotron frequency that was independent of ion radial and axial positions. Our customized 12 tesla FT-ICR instrument was upgraded with the new cell, and the performance was characterized for a range of ion excitation power and ion populations. Operating the compensated cell at increased postexcitation radii, ∼0.7 of the cell inner radius, resulted in improved mass measurement accuracy together with increased signal intensity. Under these same operating conditions the noncompensated open cell configuration exhibited peak splitting and reduced signal life time. Mass accuracy tests using 11 calibrants covering a wide m/z range reproducibly produced under 0.05 ppm RMS precision of the internal calibration for reduced ion populations and the optimal excitation radius. Conditions of increased ion population resulted in a twofold improvement in mass accuracy compared with the noncompensated cell, due to the larger achievable excitation radii and correspondingly lower space charge related perturbations of the calibration law

    Estimation of fluorescence lifetimes via rotational invariance techniques

    Estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques is a classical algorithm widely used in array signal processing for direction-of-arrival estimation of emitters. Inspired by this method, a new signal model and a new fluorescence lifetime estimation via rotational invariance techniques (FLERIT) were developed for multi-exponential fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) experiments. The FLERIT only requires a few time bins of a histogram generated by a time-correlated single photon counting FLIM system, greatly reducing the data throughput from the imager to the signal processing units. As a non-iterative method, the FLERIT does not require initial conditions, prior information nor model selection that are usually required by widely used traditional fitting methods, including nonlinear least square methods or maximum likelihood methods. Moreover, its simplicity means it is suitable for implementations in embedded systems for real-time applications. FLERIT was tested on synthesized and experimental fluorescent cell data showing the potentials to be widely applied in FLIM data analysis

    Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey

    Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system

    Near-Wall Flow in Turbomachinery Cascades—Results of a German Collaborative Project

    This article provides a summarizing account of the results obtained in the current collabora-tive work of four research institutes concerning near-wall flow in turbomachinery. Specific questions regarding the influences of boundary layer development on blades and endwalls as well as loss mech-anisms due to secondary flow are investigated. These address skewness, periodical distortion, wake interaction and heat transfer, among others. Several test rigs with modifiable configurations are used for the experimental investigations including an axial low speed compressor, an axial high-speed wind tunnel, and an axial low-speed turbine. Approved stationary and time resolving measurements techniques are applied in combination with custom hot-film sensor-arrays. The experiments are complemented by URANS simulations, and one group focusses on turbulence-resolving simulations to elucidate the specific impact of rotation. Juxtaposing and interlacing their results the four groups provide a broad picture of the underlying phenomena, ranging from compressors to turbines, from isothermal to non-adiabatic, and from incompressible to compressible flows.The investigations reported in this article were conducted within the framework of the joint research project “Near-Wall Flow in Turbomachinery Cascades” which was funded and supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) under grant number PAK 948.     Study of fuel systems for LH2-fueled subsonic transport aircraft, volume 1

    Several engine concepts examined to determine a preferred design which most effectively exploits the characteristics of hydrogen fuel in aircraft tanks received major emphasis. Many candidate designs of tank structure and cryogenic insulation systems were evaluated. Designs of all major elements of the aircraft fuel system including pumps, lines, valves, regulators, and heat exchangers received attention. Selected designs of boost pumps to be mounted in the LH2 tanks, and of a high pressure pump to be mounted on the engine were defined. A final design of LH2-fueled transport aircraft was established which incorporates a preferred design of fuel system. That aircraft was then compared with a conventionally fueled counterpart designed to equivalent technology standards

    Improved navigation by combining VOR/DME information with air or inertial data

    The improvement was determined in navigational accuracy obtainable by combining VOR/DME information (from one or two stations) with air data (airspeed and heading) or with data from an inertial navigation system (INS) by means of a maximum-likelihood filter. It was found that the addition of air data to the information from one VOR/DME station reduces the RMS position error by a factor of about 2, whereas the addition of inertial data from a low-quality INS reduces the RMS position error by a factor of about 3. The use of information from two VOR/DME stations with air or inertial data yields large factors of improvement in RMS position accuracy over the use of a single VOR/DME station, roughly 15 to 20 for the air-data case and 25 to 35 for the inertial-data case. As far as position accuracy is concerned, at most one VOR station need be used. When continuously updating an INS with VOR/DME information, the use of a high-quality INS (0.01 deg/hr gyro drift) instead of a low-quality INS (1.0 deg/hr gyro drift) does not substantially improve position accuracy

    Toward Understanding Tip Leakage Flows in Small Compressor Cores Including Stator Leakage Flow

    The focus of this work was to provide additional data to supplement the work reported in NASA/CR-2015-218868 (Berdanier and Key, 2015b). The aim of that project was to characterize the fundamental flow physics and the overall performance effects due to increased rotor tip clearance heights in axial compressors. Data have been collected in the three-stage axial research compressor at Purdue University with a specific focus on analyzing the multistage effects resulting from the tip leakage flow. Three separate rotor tip clearances were studied with nominal tip clearance gaps of 1.5 percent, 3.0 percent, and 4.0 percent based on a constant annulus height. Overall compressor performance was previously investigated at four corrected speedlines (100 percent, 90 percent, 80 percent, and 68 percent) for each of the three tip clearance configurations. This study extends the previously published results to include detailed steady and time-resolved pressure data at two loading conditions, nominal loading (NL) and high loading (HL), on the 100 percent corrected speedline for the intermediate clearance level (3.0 percent). Steady detailed radial traverses of total pressure at the exit of each stator row are supported by flow visualization techniques to identify regions of flow recirculation and separation. Furthermore, detailed radial traverses of time-resolved total pressures at the exit of each rotor row have been measured with a fast-response pressure probe. These data were combined with existing three-component velocity measurements to identify a novel technique for calculating blockage in a multistage compressor. Time-resolved static pressure measurements have been collected over the rotor tips for all rotors with each of the three tip clearance configurations for up to five loading conditions along the 100 percent corrected speedline using fast-response piezoresistive pressure sensors. These time-resolved static pressure measurements reveal new knowledge about the trajectory of the tip leakage flow through the rotor passage. Further, these data extend previous measurements identifying a modulation of the tip leakage flow due to upstream stator wake propagation. Finally, a novel instrumentation technique has been implemented to measure pressures in the shrouded stator cavities. These data provide boundary conditions relating to the flow across the shrouded stator knife seal teeth. Moreover, the utilization of fast-response pressure sensors provides a new look at the time-resolved pressure field, leading to instantaneous differential pressures across the seal teeth. Ultimately, the data collected for this project represent a unique data set which contributes to build a better understanding of the tip leakage flow field and its associated loss mechanisms. These data will facilitate future engine design goals leading to small blade heights in the rear stages of high pressure compressors and aid in the development of new blade designs which are desensitized to the performance penalties attributed to rotor tip leakage flows
