    Resolving Distributed Knowledge

    Distributed knowledge is the sum of the knowledge in a group; what someone who is able to discern between two possible worlds whenever any member of the group can discern between them, would know. Sometimes distributed knowledge is referred to as the potential knowledge of a group, or the joint knowledge they could obtain if they had unlimited means of communication. In epistemic logic, the formula D_G{\phi} is intended to express the fact that group G has distributed knowledge of {\phi}, that there is enough information in the group to infer {\phi}. But this is not the same as reasoning about what happens if the members of the group share their information. In this paper we introduce an operator R_G, such that R_G{\phi} means that {\phi} is true after G have shared all their information with each other - after G's distributed knowledge has been resolved. The R_G operators are called resolution operators. Semantically, we say that an expression R_G{\phi} is true iff {\phi} is true in what van Benthem [11, p. 249] calls (G's) communication core; the model update obtained by removing links to states for members of G that are not linked by all members of G. We study logics with different combinations of resolution operators and operators for common and distributed knowledge.     Shinren : Non-monotonic trust management for distributed systems

    The open and dynamic nature of modern distributed systems and pervasive environments presents significant challenges to security management. One solution may be trust management which utilises the notion of trust in order to specify and interpret security policies and make decisions on security-related actions. Most trust management systems assume monotonicity where additional information can only result in the increasing of trust. The monotonic assumption oversimplifies the real world by not considering negative information, thus it cannot handle many real world scenarios. In this paper we present Shinren, a novel non-monotonic trust management system based on bilattice theory and the anyworld assumption. Shinren takes into account negative information and supports reasoning with incomplete information, uncertainty and inconsistency. Information from multiple sources such as credentials, recommendations, reputation and local knowledge can be used and combined in order to establish trust. Shinren also supports prioritisation which is important in decision making and resolving modality conflicts that are caused by non-monotonicity

    Lower Bounds for Shoreline Searching With 2 or More Robots

    Searching for a line on the plane with nn unit speed robots is a classic online problem that dates back to the 50's, and for which competitive ratio upper bounds are known for every n1n\geq 1. In this work we improve the best lower bound known for n=2n=2 robots from 1.5993 to 3. Moreover we prove that the competitive ratio is at least 3\sqrt{3} for n=3n=3 robots, and at least 1/cos(π/n)1/\cos(\pi/n) for n4n\geq 4 robots. Our lower bounds match the best upper bounds known for n4n\geq 4, hence resolving these cases.     A shared information system is a series of computer systems interconnected by some kind of communication network. There are data repositories residing on each computer. These data repositories must somehow be integrated. The purpose for using distributed and multi-database systems is to allow users to view collections of data repositories as if they were a single entity. Multidatabase systems, better known as heterogeneous multidatabase systems, are characterized by dissimilar data models, concurrency and optimization strategies and access methods. Unlike homogenous systems, the data models that compose the global database can be based on different types of data models. It is not necessary that all participant databases use the same data model. Federated distributed database systems are a special case of multidatabase systems. They are completely autonomous and do not rely on the global data dictionary to process distributed queries. Processing distributed query requests in federated databases is very difficult since there are multiple independent databases with their own rules for query optimization, deadlock detection, and concurrency. Expert systems can play a role in this type of environment by supplying a knowledge base that contains rules for data object conversion, rules for resolving naming conflicts, and rules for exchanging data.http://archive.org/details/theroleofexperts109459362Turkish Navy author.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
