    An Analysis of Aspect Composition Problems

    The composition of multiple software units does not always yield the desired results. In particular, aspect-oriented composition mechanisms introduce new kinds of composition problems. These are caused by different characteristics as compared to object-oriented composition, such as inverse dependencies. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of aspect-oriented composition problems, and eventually composition problems in a more general context. To this extent we propose and illustrate a systematic approach to analyze composition problems in a precise and concrete manner. In this approach we represent aspect-based composition mechanisms as transformation rules on program graphs. We explicitly model and show where composition problems occur, in a way that can easily be fully automated. In this paper we focus on structural superimposition (cf. intertype declarations) to illustrate our approach; this results in the identification of three categories of causes of composition problems. \u

    A taxonomy of asymmetric requirements aspects

    The early aspects community has received increasing attention among researchers and practitioners, and has grown a set of meaningful terminology and concepts in recent years, including the notion of requirements aspects. Aspects at the requirements level present stakeholder concerns that crosscut the problem domain, with the potential for a broad impact on questions of scoping, prioritization, and architectural design. Although many existing requirements engineering approaches advocate and advertise an integral support of early aspects analysis, one challenge is that the notion of a requirements aspect is not yet well established to efficaciously serve the community. Instead of defining the term once and for all in a normally arduous and unproductive conceptual unification stage, we present a preliminary taxonomy based on the literature survey to show the different features of an asymmetric requirements aspect. Existing approaches that handle requirements aspects are compared and classified according to the proposed taxonomy. In addition,we study crosscutting security requirements to exemplify the taxonomy's use, substantiate its value, and explore its future directions

    A Practical Hierarchial Model of Parallel Computation: The Model

    We introduce a model of parallel computation that retains the ideal properties of the PRAM by using it as a sub-model, while simultaneously being more reflective of realistic parallel architectures by accounting for and providing abstract control over communication and synchronization costs. The Hierarchical PRAM (H-PRAM) model controls conceptual complexity in the face of asynchrony in two ways. First, by providing the simplifying assumption of synchronization to the design of algorithms, but allowing the algorithms to work asynchronously with each other; and organizing this control asynchrony via an implicit hierarchy relation. Second, by allowing the restriction of communication asynchrony in order to obtain determinate algorithms (thus greatly simplifying proofs of correctness). It is shown that the model is reflective of a variety of existing and proposed parallel architectures, particularly ones that can support massive parallelism. Relationships to programming languages are discussed. Since the PRAM is a sub-model, we can use PRAM algorithms as sub-algorithms in algorithms for the H-PRAM; thus results that have been established with respect to the PRAM are potentially transferable to this new model. The H-PRAM can be used as a flexible tool to investigate general degrees of locality (“neighborhoods of activity) in problems, considering communication and synchronization simultaneously. This gives the potential of obtaining algorithms that map more efficiently to architectures, and of increasing the number of processors that can efficiently be used on a problem (in comparison to a PRAM that charges for communication and synchronization). The model presents a framework in which to study the extent that general locality can be exploited in parallel computing.     Continuous Planning and Execution with Timelines

    Planning systems need to be endowed with some additional features to cope effectively with execution: e.g., the ability to keep the plan database updated with respect to the actual feedbacks provided by the controlled system, to mention but one. In this paper, we identify a set of noteworthy planning and execution open issues relatively to the timeline-based planning approach. We address those issues presenting a domain independent deliberative system, implemented on top of the APSI-TRF, the A PSI Timeline-based Representation Framework, extended with timeline dispatching and execution-supervision capabilities so as to allow continuous planning and closed-loop re-planning activities. Some ongoing research directions are also briefly introduced
