Effects of Quantitative Measures on Understanding Inconsistencies in Business Rules

Business Rules have matured to an important aspect in the development of organizations, encoding company knowledge as declarative constraints, aimed to ensure compliant business. The management of business rules is widely acknowledged as a challenging task. A problem here is a potential inconsistency ofbusiness rules, as business rules are often created collaboratively. To support companies in managing inconsistency, many works have suggested that a quantification of inconsistencies could provide valuable insights. However, the actual effects of quantitative insights in business rules management have not yet been evaluated. In this work, we present the results of an empirical experiment using eye-tracking and other performance measures to analyze the effects of quantitative measures on understanding inconsistencies in business rules. Our results indicate that quantitative measures are associated with better understanding accuracy, understanding efficiency and less mental effort in business rules management

Power of Speech Styles: A Relational Framing Perspective

This study advances understanding of powerful and powerless language effects by incorporating a relational framing perspective. Relational framing theory (RFT) suggests that when messages are interpreted using a dominance frame, issues regarding persuasion, influence, and control become salient. When exchanges are framed by affiliation, however, issues of liking, attraction, and regard become salient. Power of speech style researchers have instantiated dominance-framed interactions in their experiments primarily, thus leaving affiliation-framed interactions largely ignored. Addressing this gap, this study considered the effects of relational framing differences on participants’ evaluation of speech style variations. Consistent with previous literature and in partial support for the RFT derived hypotheses, this study found that when the exchange was framed by domination, powerless language negatively affected speakers’ superiority, general control, dynamism, and control over outcome. However, effects were much less apparent when exchanges were framed more by affiliation than domination. These findings warrant further investigation concerning when exactly powerless and powerful language effects exist in day-to-day interactions

La evasión en The House of Commons y el Congreso de los Diputados: un estudio intercultural

Falta palabras claveThe purpose of this dissertation is to carry out an analysis of political discourse used by politicians in the House of Commons1 in the United Kingdom and El Congreso de los Diputados2 in Spain. This analysis will consist of a comparative study of question and answer sessions in the British and Spanish Parliaments, with the idea of comparing and contrasting linguistic and cultural differences between the two nations mentioned, the United Kingdom and Spain. The concept of “face”, an idea proposed by Goffman (1955, 1967), and subsequently developed by Brown and Levinson (1978, 1987), and other authors such as R. Lakoff (1973), Leech (1983), and Fraser (1990) will be examined, and applied to political discourse. The phenomenon of equivocation, used in situations when people find themselves in a position where telling the truth could be hurtful and unnecessary, and telling a blatant lie could also be inappropriate, developed by Bavelas et al. (1990), will be thoroughly discussed and applied to the political debates analysed. The typology of equivocation put forward by Bull and Meyer (1993) will be thoroughly discussed, and we will see how the equivocation strategies which they propose are employed by the interviewees in the question and answer sessions of both the British and Spanish Parliaments. This will be followed by a discussion on the political similarities and differences between the two cultures, after which the pertinent conclusions will be drawn
