The Communicating Home - Definition, Evaluation and Business Opportunities for TeliaSonera in a 3-5 years perspective

    Get PDF
The communicating home concept has been defined by identifying the dominating communication technologies to/from and in the homes, the most important customer behavior and user needs, the dominating products and the dominating actors of the industry. The evaluation of the communicating home industry has been performed with a five forces framework analysis and theories regarding value migration and value structures of industries. It has been concluded that actors of communication technologies, goods and access services will compete fiercely. The barriers of entry will however be high. When it comes to content services the situation is completely different. These actors will, to the largest extent, meet lower competition and low barriers of entry. As a consequence a value migration from communication technologies, goods and access services to content services will occur. TeliaSonera is suggested to develop a content service portal. It should, in its first version, contain IPTV, music on demand, video on demand, data security, online storing and online gaming in the first place. The TeliaSonera group has the right prerequisites to implement and capitalize on a content service portal. In addition to the content service portal some other business opportunities have also been addressed in the business model

This study provides an overview of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology, which allows an architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of intelligent devices, PCs of all form factors, and wireless devices within the home, and builds on Internet standards and technologies, such as TCP/IP, HTTP, and XML, to enable these devices to automatically connect with one another and work together to build home networking independent of any particular operating system, programming language, transport mechanisms, or physical medium. UPnP technology is all about making home networking simple and affordable for users, supporting zero-configuration networking and automatic discovery. The study also defines overall UPnP Audio/Video (A/V) Architecture which supports arbitrary transfer protocols and content formats, enables the A/V content to flow directly between devices without any intervention from Control Point (CP), makes CPs to remain independent of any particular device type, content format and transfer protocol and requires no assistance at all from the user since Media Renderer, can discover available services from Media Server in its neighborhood, perform the necessary setup automatically, and finally enable the user to select and play their favorite song in home entertainment usage scenario. Implementation phase provides A/V transport and streaming without any user intervention between server and renderer by building and programming an hardware interface as Media Renderer, in order to make an ordinary A/V device UPnP enabled and programming a laptop as CP and Media Server.Yüksek LisansM.Sc

Given the increasing technological development, it would be interesting to investigate the technical solutions and the possibility to achieve high bit rate connectivity. Towards this end, this thesis aims to investigate the development of a roadmap which will be the key for ensuring the smooth development of future home networks and determine the most appropriate technological solutions for the development of such systems. This thesis aims both to contribute to a roadmap implementation in next-generation home networks, based on multi-criteria decision making methods and also study critical issues of uncertainty lurking in decision making processes and may affect the final result. The study and the development of the above lies on the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), and especially in pairwise comparison method, integral part of many decision making processes

Lopuksi suunnitellaan konkreettinen kotiverkko. Käyttötilanteiden avulla havainnollistaan verkkotekniikoiden ja väliohjelmiston yhteistoimintaa tietoliikenteen hallinnassa

Bio-Inspired Optimization of Ultra-Wideband Patch Antennas Using Graphics Processing Unit Acceleration

Ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless systems have recently gained considerable attention as effective communications platforms with the properties of low power and high data rates. Applications of UWB such as wireless USB put size constraints on the antenna, however, which can be very dicult to meet using typical narrow band antenna designs. The aim of this thesis is to show how bio-inspired evolutionary optimization algorithms, in particular genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and biogeography-based optimization (BBO) can produce novel UWB planar patch antenna designs that meet a size constraint of a 10 mm 10 mm patch. Each potential antenna design is evaluated with the nite dierence time domain (FDTD) technique, which is accurate but time-consuming. Another aspect of this thesis is the modication of FDTD to run on a graphics processing unit (GPU) to obtain nearly a 20 speedup. With the combination of GA, PSO, BBO and GPU-accelerated FDTD, three novel antenna designs are produced that meet the size and bandwidth requirements applicable to UWB wireless USB system

Monet joutuvat turvautumaan ulkopuoliseen apuun. Households are slowly turning into digital homes as consumers are filling up their homes with a vast number of digital devices. As the number of devices grows, management of the devices and their interoperability is becoming increasingly complex so that only tech enthusiasts are able to handle the task. For many, the installation and maintenance of the devices is often too difficult to take care of by themselves and outside help is required. By assessing an average Finnish household, this thesis aims to evaluate the digital home market of Finland and the possible roles of telecom operators in the market. The costs of purchasing and maintaining the devices were estimated to predict the possible growth of the market based on literature analysis and expert interviews. Four predefined scenarios were used for the analysis to depict the potential development paths of digital homes: the locally centralized, the globally centralized, the global specialists and local janitors, and the do-it-yourself-scenario. The results of the study indicate that a sudden change in consumption habits and thus the overall growth of the digital home market is unlikely during the next five years. However, as the amount of money spent on digital homes is expected to increase due to the digitalization of more traditional services, the number of devices in an average household most likely keeps steadily growing and the entire market along with it. The digital home market will most likely be a combination of two or more of the scenarios and their attributes. During the analysis also some deficiencies were found in the scenarios used and had to be taken into consideration in this thesis

On the feasibility of the communications in the TVWS spectrum analysis and coexistence issue

In the last decade, the enormous growth in the wireless industry has come from using only a small part of the wireless spectrum, nominally less than 10% under 3 GHz. Nowadays, the vast majority of the available spectral resources have already been licensed. Measurements made by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) have shown that a great part of the spectrum, although allocated, is virtually unused. For all this reasons, in the last years, several countries have already (USA) or are in the process (EU, China, Japan, South Korea) of switching off analog TV broadcasting in favor of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasting systems and digital switchover plans have driven a thorough review of TV spectrum exploitation. The resulting unused channels within this band are called “TV white spaces” (TVWS). Even after the redistribution of the digital TV channels, the problem of an efficient utilization of the allocated frequencies is still far from being solved. For example, there are still large territorial areas on which, although allocated, the TV channels result unused, due to coverage problems. New spectrum allocation approaches such as the dynamic spectrum access method have been studied. This new concept implies that the radio terminals have the capacity to monitor their own radio environment and consequently adapt to the transmission conditions on whatever frequency band are available (adaptive radio). If this concept is supplemented with the capacity of analyzing the surrounding radio environment in search of white spaces, the term adaptive radio is extended to Cognitive Radio (CR). The spectrum management rule of CR is that all new users for the spectrum are secondary (cognitive) users (SU) and requires that they must detect and avoid the primary (licensed) users (PU) in terms of used frequencies, transmission power and modulation scheme. In the TV bands specifically, the presence of PUs (e.g. TV broadcasters) can be revealed both performing a spectrum sensing operation and considering the information provided by the external databases called “geo-location databases” (GL-DB). The database provides, for a certain location, the list of the free TV channels and the allowable maximum effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) for transmitting without harmful interference to incumbent users. Decision thresholds are still a critical parameter for protecting services in a scenario where cognitive devices would be operating. There are cases where the approach based on GL Spectrum Occupancy DB might not be available, either because the database does not exist for that area (for example in non densely populated areas) or in the case that access to the database is not possible (deep indoor operation, low populated areas etc.). Several studies have suggested that radio noise has increased significantly over the last decades and consequently the assumptions about decision thresholds and interference protection ratios might be outdated. The Hidden Node Margin (HNM) is a parameter that quantifies the difference between the potential interfered signal values at the location where it is measured or estimated by the cognitive device, and the actual value at the location where the receiving antenna for this signal is located. HNM is a key parameter to define the protection requirements that cognitive devices must comply in order not to create any harmful interference to broadcast receiving systems. In this context, this thesis goes in a precise direction, with four main topics related to the feasibility of communication cognitive systems operating in the TVWS, considering coexistence as the main operational issue. The first topic studies new spectrum sensing approaches in order to improve the more critical functionality of CRs. In the second topic an unlicensed indoor short-range distribution system for the wireless retransmission in the DTT band of High definition TV (HDTV) contents with immediate implementations as home entertainment systems has been carried out. The third topic of this thesis is about a particular database developed in order to provide information to easily calculate HNM values and associated statistics, TV Channel Occupancy and Man Made Noise Upper Limits. The empirical data for this work has been recorded in different locations of Spain and Italy during 2011 and 2012 thanks to the partnership between the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (D.I.E.E.) of the University of Cagliari and the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications of the University of Bilbao (UPV/EHU). Finally in the last topic we focus on the IEEE 802.22 WRAN standard evaluating, thanks to extended measurements, the performance of an 802.22 system operating into the same coverage range of a DTT receiver

RISM investigated alternative approaches, technologies, and communication network architectures to facilitate building the Spaceports and Ranges of the future. RISM started by document most existing US ranges and their capabilities. In parallel, RISM obtained inputs from the following: 1) NASA and NASA-contractor engineers and managers, and; 2) Aerospace leaders from Government, Academia, and Industry, participating through the Space Based Range Distributed System Working Group (SBRDSWG), many of whom are also; 3) Members of the Advanced Range Technology Working Group (ARTWG) subgroups, and; 4) Members of the Advanced Spaceport Technology Working Group (ASTWG). These diverse inputs helped to envision advanced technologies for implementing future Ranges and Range systems that builds on today s cabled and wireless legacy infrastructures while seamlessly integrating both today s emerging and tomorrow s building-block communication techniques. The fundamental key is to envision a transition to a Space Based Range Distributed Subsystem. The enabling concept is to identify the specific needs of Range users that can be solved through applying emerging communication tec
