Freedom in middle French Enlightenment : interpreted through a picturesque garden.
Freedom is a critical concept that helps shape the discourse of modern society and corresponding thoughts about people\u27s private, public, cultural and spiritual lives. Standing at the fountainhead of the modern era, the Enlightenment was a critical period when this concept was defined, analyzed and debated in modern terminology with modern questions directed at modern problems. However, despite its importance, scholars in the twentieth century have disagreed about what to make of the Enlightenment liberal tradition. What was not fully discussed were the cultural sentiments and artistic expressions that interacted with the intellectual and political domains. To complement this, this dissertation examines a French picturesque garden which is a typical manifestation of the social and cultural spirits of middle French Enlightenment, and which facilitates understanding of the connotations and features of the concept of freedom. The dissertation adopts a three-layered structure: analysis of the garden, the cultural ideas reflected in the garden, and the concept of freedom constructed in this cultural background. Each layer is based on findings from the previous one, and elevates the discussion on the garden to the cultural and then the political levels. Specifically, the first two chapters are preparatory chapters that provide background information about the garden and the cultural trends at the time under discussion. Chapter I introduces the garden, its owner and his social circle. Chapter II examines the cultural background by way of a discussion of the competing ideas of aesthetics. Each of the next three chapters is devoted to one outstanding feature observed from the garden that bears a critical relationship to the concept of freedom. Chapter III deals with the epistemological and teleological dimensions of the passion for nature in its natural form. Chapter IV discusses the urge to embrace all times and places . Chapter V takes up the representation of otherness and its implication for the concept of freedom. Chapter VI concludes the dissertation
Inspirations from installation art: creating open stories and using found works in a post-apocalypse animation
This research is a practice-based research and also an art-based research. The major project of this study is the open screenplay of The Hero's Journey, and its animated section (section 1) that uses found works and multiple production techniques. Based on this production practice, this research investigates how installation art can inspire animation in screenplay writing and visual design; it explores how the formulaic narrative structure of the post-apocalypse genre can be disrupted to create an open story; and it also explores to what extent found works can be used in animation. A methodological model for the practice-based research in the field of animation has been built to frame this research and to organize the multiple disciplines in relation to this research. This study transfers thoughts and techniques from installation art to animation, and the outcome benefits other independent animators and screenplay writers who are without the experience of installation art creative practice
Operation mode and commodity attributes of art festivals: the case of Tianfu Ancient Town Art Festival

An Inquiry into the Creative Process of Butoh: With Reference to the Implications of Eastern and Western Significances
This thesis investigates the creative processes of Butoh choreography. A phenomenological perspective is used in this thesis to explore the implications for choreographers of the choreographic options employed in Butoh creative processes. Phenomenology corresponds to the Japanese philosophical context which gave birth to Butoh, elucidating the worldview merging with the universe which underpins Butoh. In terms of phenomenology, merging with the universe is firstly understood as a state of inter-subjectivity or transcendental consciousness, and secondly as the interweaving through actions of individual woridviews and a greater world of shared socio-cultural significances contributed by different people. The inter-subjective relationship between self, other self and objects is used to examine and elucidate the juxtaposition of various kinds of imagery in Butoh. The phenomenological notion of actions is used to examine bodily movement with respect to a greater world in Butoh. Phenomenology particularly corresponds to some of the fundamental processes used by Butoh choreographers. The choreographers' initial options for treating materials, namely visceral sensations as media for merging with the universe, texts as media for perception, paintings as media for presenting images, and actions as building blocks of an inter-subjective world, are inclined to guide the creative processes to develop the manifold of a spiritual imagery and bodily actions. These options and treatments are elucidated in this thesis through the network of perception and the phenomenological notion of graded fulfillment. The choreographer's treatment of the materials requires that the network of perception operates differently for different materials. The results of the operations are then integrated by the choreographer, through a process of graded fulfillment, into a holistic perception of the imagery or into a greater world, of which every image on stage is a part. In contrast the dialectical choreographic options, namely texts as tools for reasoning, paintings as representative structures of the subjects, and actions as representative units of social structure and cultural patterns, are inclined to guide the choreographers towards a focus on the development of formalised postures and gestures. The dialectical options are underpinned by rationalist, sociological or anthropological perspectives. It is argued that both the initial and dialectical options have value. The initial and dialectical options have co-existed and merged over the course of Butoh's development. Through their use different significances are incorporated into dance through the creative processes. Those significances can be identified as mainly rooted in Eastern philosophy, but later expanded to include Western philosophy when Butoh began to develop in a global context. Accordingly, Butoh creative processes are enriched by the use of a variety of
choreographic options and by incorporating viewpoints from different people and perspectives

Advertising Thinking: To investigate the use of “the story” in creative advertising in the West and analyse its possible application in China
The central aim of this study is to combine theorist Roland Barthes’ ideas on visual and textual thinking with leading contemporary approaches to Western advertising design with a view to their possible application in China. The result is a newly coined concept the present author refers to as ‘Advertising Thinking’. This new term puts forward a fresh method that goes beyond the conventional way of dealing with advertising design.
At present, there are very few in-depth studies of advertising in China, making it crucial for Chinese designers, creative directors, design tutors, entrepreneurs and business people to gain a better understanding of the subject. The intention is for this understanding developed in the current study to enable China’s advertising industry and its discourse to go beyond the superficial stage it is presently at.
In order to achieve this an in-depth analysis of the status quo of China’s story creative advertising history is needed. From this it can be seen that imitation, celebrity endorsement and the lack of aesthetic appeal in Chinese advertising design are issues that urgently need to be addressed. Through an in-depth study of advertising theory key concepts in advertising need to be explored. Following an introduction that outlines the key concepts in Barthes’ writing – hidden meaning, narrative, and emotion - numerous case studies are explored in the chapters that follow to demonstrate different approaches to Advertising Thinking. These case studies include: Sandy Hook ‘Even’ (USA) 2016; Stay in School (Australia) 2014; Coca Cola ‘Pool Boy’ (USA) 2017; and Black Currant Tango ‘St George’ (UK) 1996. Following this, the research analyses five Chinese advertisements. From the analysis of these case studies it can be seen that Chinese advertisers and advertising professionals need to critically explore Chinese traditional culture and apply key concepts in contemporary Western advertising theory - a number of points are made that are crucial to moving Chinese advertising design forwards so that it can realise its potential
