    Modeling strategies for multiple scenarios and fast simulations in large systems: applications to fire safety and energy engineering

    The use of computational modeling has become very popular and important in many engineering and physical fields, as it is considered a fast and inexpensive technique to support and often substitute experimental analysis. In fact system design and analysis can be carried out through computational studies instead of experiments, that are typically demanding in terms of cost and technical resources; sometimes the systems characteristics and the technical problems make the experiments impossible to perform and the use of computational tools is the only feasible option. Demand of resources for realistic simulation is increasing due to the interest in studying complex and large systems. In these framework smart modeling approaches and model reduction techniques play a crucial role for making complex and large system suitable for simulations. Moreover, it should be considered that often more than one simulation is requested in order to perform an analysis. For instance, if a heuristic method is applied to the optimization of a component, the model has to be run a certain number of times. The same problem arises when a certain level of uncertainty affect the system parameters; in this case also many simulation are required for obtaining the desired information. This is the reason why the use of technique that allows to obtain compact model is an interesting topic nowadays. In this PhD thesis different reduction approaches and strategies have been used in order to analyze three energetic systems involving large domain and long time, one for each reduction approach categories. In all the topic considered, a smart model has been adopted and, when data were available, tested using experimental data. All the model are characterized by large domain and the time involved in the analysis are high in all the cases, therefore a method for compact model achievement is used in all the cases. The considered topics are: • Groundwater temperature perturbations due to geothermal heat pump installations, analyzed trough a multi-level model. • District heating networks (DHN), studied from both the fluid-dynamic and thermal point of view and applied to one of the larger network in Europe, the Turin district heating system (DHS), trough a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition - Radial Basis Function model. • Forest fire propagation simulation carried out using a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition projection model

    Data-Driven Virtual Flow Rate Sensor Development for Leakage Monitoring at the Cradle Bearing in an Axial Piston Pump

    The leakage of the tribological contact in axial piston pumps significantly impacts the pump efficiency. Leakage observations can be used to optimize the pump design and monitor the behavior of the tribological contact. However, due to assembly limitations, it is not always feasible to observe the leakage of each tribological contact individually with a flow rate sensor. This work developed a data-driven virtual flow rate sensor for monitoring the leakage of cradle bearings in axial piston pumps under different operating conditions and recess pressures. The performance of neural network, support vector regression, and Gaussian regression methods for developing the virtual flow rate sensor was systematically investigated. In addition, the effect of the number of datasets and label distribution on the performance of the virtual flow sensor were systematically studied. The findings are verified using a data-driven virtual flow rate sensor to observe the leakage. In addition, they show that the distribution of labels significantly impacts the model’s performance when using support vector regression and Gaussian regression. Neural network is relatively robust to the distribution of labeled data. Moreover, the datasets also influence model performance but are not as significant as the label distribution

    Development of a fault detection and diagnosis approach for a binary ice system

    Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) is an important part to maintain the performance, improve the reliability and prevent energy wastage of the refrigeration systems. Binary ice systems, which have become more commonly employed in both industry and domestic applications, are essentially refrigeration systems using water-ice slurry mixture as a secondary refrigerant. The existence of the ice makes binary ice systems different from conventional liquid chillers, leading to the requirement of a specified FDD method. Therefore, the current research focuses on developing a model based dynamic FDD approach that can capture the unique features of binary ice systems in order to detect some pre-selected faults, including binary ice flow restriction, cooling water flow restriction, incorrect solution concentration, ice generator scraper fault and ice generator motor failure. To provide fault free predictions for the FDD, a dynamic hybrid model of the binary ice system was proposed. The model consisted of an analytical sub-model of the scraped surface ice generator, which was an essential component of the binary ice system that produced ice, and an artificial neural network (ANN) sub-model of the primary refrigeration circuit. The two sub-models were coupled by using two of the ANN model’s outputs as the inputs to the analytical model, namely the evaporating temperature and the compressor power consumption, as well as sharing some of the input parameters. The coupled model was validated with data from a 2.5kW laboratory binary ice test rig. The FDD was carried out by monitoring the changes of the residuals of some carefully chosen parameters, using CUmulative SUM (CUSUM) test. Two parameters, namely cooling water temperature difference and evaporating temperature, were monitored for fault detection purpose, and condenser outlet temperature, cooling water temperature difference, discharge temperature and binary ice outlet temperature were observed for fault diagnosis function. An ANN fault classifier was developed to identify the type of the fault by analysing the combinations of the fault diagnosis parameter variations. This FDD method was found to be able to detect and diagnose successfully the pre-selected faults without raising any false alarm, and in addition it was capable of diagnosing three pairs of double faul

    Failure Diagnosis and Prognosis of Safety Critical Systems: Applications in Aerospace Industries

    Many safety-critical systems such as aircraft, space crafts, and large power plants are required to operate in a reliable and efficient working condition without any performance degradation. As a result, fault diagnosis and prognosis (FDP) is a research topic of great interest in these systems. FDP systems attempt to use historical and current data of a system, which are collected from various measurements to detect faults, diagnose the types of possible failures, predict and manage failures in advance. This thesis deals with FDP of safety-critical systems. For this purpose, two critical systems including a multifunctional spoiler (MFS) and hydro-control value system are considered, and some challenging issues from the FDP are investigated. This research work consists of three general directions, i.e., monitoring, failure diagnosis, and prognosis. The proposed FDP methods are based on data-driven and model-based approaches. The main aim of the data-driven methods is to utilize measurement data from the system and forecast the remaining useful life (RUL) of the faulty components accurately and efficiently. In this regard, two dierent methods are developed. A modular FDP method based on a divide and conquer strategy is presented for the MFS system. The modular structure contains three components:1) fault diagnosis unit, 2) failure parameter estimation unit and 3) RUL unit. The fault diagnosis unit identifies types of faults based on an integration of neural network (NN) method and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) technique. Failure parameter estimation unit observes the failure parameter via a distributed neural network. Afterward, the RUL of the system is predicted by an adaptive Bayesian method. In another work, an innovative data-driven FDP method is developed for hydro-control valve systems. The idea is to use redundancy in multi-sensor data information and enhance the performance of the FDP system. Therefore, a combination of a feature selection method and support vector machine (SVM) method is applied to select proper sensors for monitoring of the hydro-valve system and isolate types of fault. Then, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) method is used to estimate the failure path. Similarly, an online Bayesian algorithm is implemented for forecasting RUL. Model-based methods employ high-delity physics-based model of a system for prognosis task. In this thesis, a novel model-based approach based on an integrated extended Kalman lter (EKF) and Bayesian method is introduced for the MFS system. To monitor the MFS system, a residual estimation method using EKF is performed to capture the progress of the failure. Later, a transformation is utilized to obtain a new measure to estimate the degradation path (DP). Moreover, the recursive Bayesian algorithm is invoked to predict the RUL. Finally, relative accuracy (RA) measure is utilized to assess the performance of the proposed methods

    Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics

    With rapid developments being made in the exploration of marine resources, coastal geohazard and offshore geotechnics have attracted a great deal of attention from coastal geotechnical engineers, with significant progress being made in recent years. Due to the complicated nature of marine environmnets, there are numerous natural marine geohazard preset throughout the world’s marine areas, e.g., the South China Sea. In addition, damage to offshore infrastructure (e.g., monopiles, bridge piers, etc.) and their supporting installations (pipelines, power transmission cables, etc.) has occurred in the last decades. A better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and soil behavior of the seabed in marine environments will help engineers in the design and planning processes of coastal geotechnical engineering projects. The purpose of this book is to present the recent advances made in the field of coastal geohazards and offshore geotechnics. The book will provide researchers with information reagrding the recent developments in the field, and possible future developments. The book is composed of eighteen papers, covering three main themes: (1) the mechanisms of fluid–seabed interactions and the instability associated with seabeds when they are under dynamic loading (papers 1–5); (2) evaluation of the stability of marine infrastructure, including pipelines (papers 6–8), piled foundation and bridge piers (papers 9–12), submarine tunnels (paper 13), and other supported foundations (paper 14); and (3) coastal geohazards, including submarine landslides and slope stability (papers 15–16) and other geohazard issues (papers 17–18). The editors hope that this book will functoin as a guide for researchers, scientists, and scholars, as well as practitioners of coastal and offshore engineering

    Modelling and diagnosis of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)

    The development of mathematical models and numerical simulations is crucial to design improvement, optimization, and control of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The current study introduces a novel and computationally efficient pseudo-two-dimensional (pseudo-2D) model for simulating a single cell of a high-temperature hydrogen-fueled SOFC. The simplified pseudo-2D model can evaluate the cell polarization curve, species concentrations along the channel, cell temperature, and the current density distribution. The model takes the cell voltage as an input and computes the total current as an output. A full-physics three-dimensional model is then developed in ANSYS Fluent, with a complete step-by-step modeling approach being explained, to study the same cell with the identical operating conditions. The 3D model is validated against the other numerical and experimental studies available in the literature. It is shown that although the pseudo-2D solution converges significantly faster in comparison with the 3D case, the results of both models thoroughly match especially for the case of species distributions. The simplified model was then used to conduct sensitivity analysis of the effects of multi-physiochemical properties of porous electrodes on the polarization curve of the cell. A systematic inverse approach was then used to estimate the mentioned properties by applying the pattern search optimization algorithm to the polarization curve found by the pseudo-2D model. Finally, nine different input parameters of the model were changed to find the hydrogen distribution for each case, and a huge dataset of nearly half a million operating points was generated. The data was successfully employed to design a novel classifier-regressor pair as a virtual hydrogen sensor for online tracking of hydrogen concentration along the cell to avoid fuel starvation

    Investigation of Some Self-Optimizing Control Problems for Net-Zero Energy Buildings

    Green buildings are sustainable buildings designed to be environmentally responsible and resource efficient. The Net-Zero Energy Building (NZEB) concept is anchored on two pillars: reducing the energy consumption and enhancing the local energy generation. In other words, efficient operation of the existing building equipment and efficient power generation of building integrated renewable energy sources are two important factors of NZEB development. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are an important class of building equipment that is responsible for large portion of building energy usage, while the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system is well received as the key technology for local generation of clean power. Building system operation is a low-investment practice that aims low operation and maintenance cost. However, building HVAC and BIPV are systems subject to complicated intrinsic processes and highly variable environmental conditions and occupant behavior. Control, optimization and monitoring of such systems desire simple and effective approaches that require the least amount of model information and the use of smallest number but most robust sensor measurements. Self-optimizing control strategies promise a competitive platform for control, optimization and control integrated monitoring for building systems, and especially for the development of cost-effective NZEB. This dissertation study endorses this statement with three aspects of work relevant to building HVAC and BIPV, which could contribute several small steps towards the ramification of the self-optimizing control paradigm. This dissertation study applies self-optimizing control techniques to improve the energy efficiency of NZEB from two aspects. First, regarding the building HVAC efficiency, the dither based extremum seeking control (DESC) scheme is proposed for energy efficient operation of the chilled-water system typically used in the commercial building ventilation and air conditioning (VAC) systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, Modelica based dynamic simulation model of chilled water chiller-tower plant is developed, which consists of a screw chiller and a mechanical-draft counter-flow wet cooling tower. The steady-state performance of the cooling tower model is validated with the experimental data in a classic paper and good agreement is observed. The DESC scheme takes the total power consumption of the chiller compressor and the tower fan as feedback, and uses the fan speed setting as the control input. The inner loop controllers for the chiller operation include two proportional-integral (PI) control loops for regulating the evaporator superheat and the chilled water temperature. Simulation was conducted on the whole dynamic simulation model with different environment conditions. The simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed ESC strategy under abrupt changes of ambient conditions and load changes. The potential for energy savings of these cases are also evaluated. The back-calculation based anti-windup ESC is also simulated for handling the integral windup problem due to actuator saturation. Second, both maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and control integrated diagnostics are investigated for BIPV with two different extremum seeking control strategies, which both would contribute to the reduction of the cost of energy (COE). In particular, the Adaptive Extremum Seeking Control (AESC) is applied for PV MPPT, which is based on a PV model with known model structure but unknown nonlinear characteristics for the current-voltage relation. The nonlinear uncertainty is approximated by a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN). A Lyapunov based inverse optimal design technique is applied to achieve parameter estimation and gradient based extremum seeking. Simulation study is performed for scenarios of temperature change, irradiance change and combined change of temperature and irradiance. Successful results are observed for all cases. Furthermore, the AESC simulation is compared to the DESC simulation, and AESC demonstrates much faster transient responses under various scenarios of ambient changes. Many of the PV degradation mechanisms are reflected as the change of the internal resistance. A scheme of detecting the change of PV internal shunt resistance is proposed using the available signals in the DESC based MPPT with square-wave dither. The impact of the internal resistance on the transient characteristics of step responses is justified by using the small-signal transfer function analysis. Simulation study is performed for both the single-string and multi-string PV examples, and both cases have demonstrated successful results. Monotonic relationship between integral error indices and the shunt internal resistance is clearly observed. In particular, for the multi-string, the inter-channel coupling is weak, which indicates consistent monitoring for multi-string operation. The proposed scheme provides the online monitoring ability of the internal resistance condition without any additional sensor, which benefits further development of PV degradation detection techniques
