Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as on-demand QoS enabler for Multimedia Applications in Smart Cities
The evolution of drones and similar small wingspan UAVs has resulted in their use in many commercial applications. This has allowed investigating the potential use of drones in the context of Internet of Things. In the recent past, there is ample evidence indicating the use of UAVs as a means to supplement mobile infrastructure to extend it for surveillance, monitoring, data collection and providing on-demand network access capabilities. This paper explores the potential of UAVs to act as on-demand QoS enablers for TCP-based applications within Smart Cities, particularly those applications that require low connection delays, reliability and high throughputs such as multimedia streaming. Many multimedia rich applications, such as live streaming, multi-player online gaming are mostly tied down to fixed-line broadband infrastructure. Mobile cloud technologies and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) address the challenge by bringing the computing, storage and networking resources to the edge and integrating with the base station, thereby providing better content delivery. The paper presents a concept of UAV-based aerial MEC, which hosts a TCP-proxy that acts as an `On-Demand QoS' enabler to TCP-based applications in Smart Cities reducing the overall-connection delays and increasing the throughput thereby enhancing the end-user experience. With the technologies available in literature we demonstrate that a UAV-based aerial MEC with the capability to migrate QoS-enabling processes from the edge to the core and edge to the edge, to support mobile applications, is feasible
Urban Freight Last Mile Logistics-Challenges and Opportunities to Improve Sustainability: A Literature Review
Last mile logistics (LML) is the least efficient and complex part of supply chain. The main objective of this study was to identify major challenges of urban freight LML and opportunities for intervention. For this, 42 peer-reviewed full papers published after 2010 and three additional references were used. The findings indicated that urban freight flow has a trend of steady growth. The main driving forces behind this steady growth are population growth, urbanization, densification, globalization, online and omni-channel (OC) retailing, and urban economic development. Using typology analysis, three main potential freight LML configurations were mapped and discussed. Freight LML configurations that involve light cargo vehicles and cargo bike-based delivery schemes could be more attractive freight LML models if the delivery failure is minimized. The LML challenges were categorized as technological, infrastructural, LML system and management, and logistic cost related challenges, and discussed broadly. Similarly, the potential opportunities were discussed from environmental, economic, and social sustainability aspects. Finally, this report has pinpointed future potential research agendas related to LML. The study could be a knowledge base useful for academicians and practitioners, logistics and technical service providers, policy makers, and customers
Improving Supply Chain and logistics and reducing costs by design and improvement of packaging with the help of Lean and DFL : Project-based case study
Logistics is critical part of supply chain, due to enabling efficient and reliable value-creating operations, with the potential to increase sales and profits. Main goals of the case study are to improve product transport packaging, packaging process, packaging and transportation costs and all related material flows throughout the supply chain in the case company. This is done by analyzing current state and employing rarely used Design for Logistics (DFL) theory framework, combined with Lean, to form a ground up approach for optimizing the supply chain.
Empirical study is carried out as case study research utilizing inductive case study framework, action research cycles and mixed methods. Both deductive and inductive reasoning are used. Theories have been employed and tested in practice, but new case related theory has also been made from ground-up based on data, experimentation, observation, and analyses. 3D-modeling is utilized extensively.
Case results include various findings regarding current state of logistics processes, costs and their relationship between packaging and packaging processes in the case company. Results also include creating a modular, interchangeable transport packaging for upcoming new product families, creating new material flow processes throughout supply chain, overhauling packaging process and creating a semi-automated packaging cell. Other resulting outcomes include e.g., significantly lower production costs, process variance and time, and transportation costs, together with increased economies of scale as well as flexibility and availability regarding transportation options. Results also point theory-wise the potential and significance of packaging for the whole supply chain entity as a creator of increased value and efficiencies, especially by facilitating and enabling creation of new capabilities regarding various internal and external processes and related production technologies.
Results of the study are both valid and reliable due to the methodology used, where de facto continuous validity and reliability evaluation was built-in because of periodical group reviews and other events partaken by cross-functional team of professionals. Results have been realized by utilizing various, both alternative and supplementary research methods. Findings and results have been further verified by prototyping, various in-practice testing, 3D-modeling as well as by ongoing implementation and commissioning to the case company’s operations.
Further research could include how to systemically introduce and implement DFL into use as integral part of product and production development alongside other DFX tools
An Overview of Drone Energy Consumption Factors and Models
At present, there is a growing demand for drones with diverse capabilities
that can be used in both civilian and military applications, and this topic is
receiving increasing attention. When it comes to drone operations, the amount
of energy they consume is a determining factor in their ability to achieve
their full potential. According to this, it appears that it is necessary to
identify the factors affecting the energy consumption of the unmanned air
vehicle (UAV) during the mission process, as well as examine the general
factors that influence the consumption of energy. This chapter aims to provide
an overview of the current state of research in the area of UAV energy
consumption and provide general categorizations of factors affecting UAV's
energy consumption as well as an investigation of different energy models

Internet+ Logistics in Chinese Non-Timber Forest Products Online Stores
Electronic commerce (E-commerce) has become an international phenomena nowadays. Especially in China, due to the country’s size, large population and culture, the consumption-driven economic growth plays a more fundamental role than in many other countries, which gives higher requirements for the development of modern logistics.
The rapid development of Chinese e-commerce, has made online shopping a very important part in people’s daily life as it is cheaper and more convenient than to buy things from traditional stores. At the same time, the Chinese government gives strong support to E-commerce in its economic development strategy.
In March 2015 an E-commerce idea called Internet Plus (Internet+) was officially announced by the Chinese Prime Minister as an important government business strategy in the future economic development plan. The idea does not only aim to develop a new type of economics, but also to improve the traditional economics. The new strategy can decrease enterprises’ cost and increase overall operating efficiency. Behind the high development speed of the e-commerce, logistics is a very important factor to ensure the success of the online business and it is necessary to realize which factors under E-commerce Logistics takes the biggest part and has the most weight among all logistics features.
In this study, I will concentrate on Internet+ Logistics, which derived from E-commerce Logistics. Evaluate the logistics performance of 364 online none timber forest products (NTFPs) stores from Alibaba online shopping mall names Tmall. The study can be seen as complete and conceptual, both in the academic and the practical field. By using entropy weight method, Topsis analysis and cross analysis, I analyze the weights of different levels indexes in Internet+ Logistics performance and also get total scores and ranking of sample online stores, in order to understand the important factors and the development trend in Internet+ Logistics. My study reveals, that some indexes such as service can largely influence the performance of online store logistics, which are the most important elements of Internet+ Logistics. The proposed framework enriches the theory of network marketing and gives directions to business owners to make improvements on the logistics quality of their online stores
