In this thesis, we propose a transaction framework to provide comprehensive and flexible transaction support for contract-driven, service-oriented business processes. The research follows the research method outlined below. Initially, a thorough investigation on current state of affairs was made. Afterwards, we carried out a case study, which we utilized to identify the problems that are likely to occur during the execution of business processes. As the result of the solution design, the concepts, scenarios, life cycles, reference architectures, and mechanisms were proposed to address the problems. The design took place on the conceptual level, while the coding/programming and implementation is out of the scope of this thesis. The business-oriented solution design allows for transaction qualities to be specified and guaranteed by a contractual approach named as TxQoS (Transactional Quality of Service). The technology-oriented design enables flexible composition of ATCs (Abstract Transaction Constructs) as a transaction schema to support the execution of complex processes. As the last step of research, we validated the feasibility of our design by a utility study conducted in a large telecom project, which has complex processes that are service-oriented and contract-driven. Finally, we discussed the contributions and limitations of the research. The main contribution of the thesis is the BTF (Business Transaction Framework) that addresses process execution reliability. The TxQoS approach enables the specification of transaction qualities in terms of FIAT (Fluency, Interference, Alternation, Transparency) properties. This businessfriendly approach allows the providers and users to agree on transaction qualities before process execution time. The building blocks of the proposed framework, ATCs, are reusable and configurable templates, and are abstracted and generalized from existing transaction models. The various transaction requirements of sub-processes and process chunks can be represented by corresponding ATCs, which allow for a flexible composition. Integrated, the TxQoS and ATC approaches work together to form a TxQoS-aware business transaction framework

A Novel Method for Process Planning for Die and Mould Manufacturing Using Expert System Approach

    Get PDF
Mould design and development are experience-oriented operations involving complex process planning integration and relatively time-consuming processes. A solution for integrating the process planning with manufacturing operations for mould design and development is presented. In this paper, the developed solution is related to cost and time. The main aim of the study is to optimize the whole process planning scenario and make it feasible and accessible for faster and optimum design to manufacture die and moulds for injection moulding applications. The developed method consists of group technology (GT) coding for part and tool linked to the manufacturing process and its criticalities. An impact factor rating system is established using the weighted average method to associate the manufacturing operations with time and cost combined with the matrix reduction method so as to produce an optimized sequence of operations. The effect of restricting certain criticalities (electric discharge machine usage, quality and complexity) on the GT code is also elaborated in reference to quality and other parameters. The resultant study presents a novel method of establishing an expert system (ES) that combines GT coding, manufacturing operations, weighted average and matrix reduction to optimize the process planning. The rationale behind the research is an effective use of the ES in optimizing process planning applications in digital manufacturing

Adaptive business rules framework for workflow management

Changing scattered and dynamic business rules in Business Workflow Systems has become a growing problem that hinders the use and configuration of workflow-based applications. There is a gap in the existing research studies which currently focus on solutions that are application specific, without accounting for the universal logical dependencies between the business rules and, as a result, do not support adaptation of the business rules in real time. Design/methodology/approach – To tackle the above problems, this paper adopts a bottom-up approach, which puts forward a component model of the business process workflows and business rules based on purely logical specification which allows incremental development of the workflows and indexing of the rules which govern them during the initial acquisition and real-time execution. Results – The paper introduces a component-based event-driven model for development of business workflows which is purely logic based and can be easily implemented using an object-oriented technology together with a formal model for accounting the business rules dependencies together with a new method for incremental indexing of the business rules controlling the workflows. It proposes a two-level inference mechanism as a vehicle for controlling the business process execution and adaptation of the business rules at real time based on propagating the dependencies between the rules. Originality/value –The major achievement of this research is the universal, strictly logic-based event-driven framework for business process modelling and control which allows automatic adaptation of the business rules governing the business workflows based on accounting for their structural dependencies. An additional advantage of the framework is its support for object-oriented technology which can be implemented with enterprise-level quality and efficiency. Although developed primarily for application in construction industry the framework is entirely domain-independent and can be used in other industries, too

Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are often the patients’ first contact with the health care system. These services are a collaborative effort between several organizations providing different levels of care. These services are also multi-organizational, process oriented, and information dependent. As a result, a significant challenge exists in these fastpaced environments in terms of collecting and handing-off accurate and timely patient information from one care provider to the next. Consequently, there is a significant need for technology-enabled process improvement initiatives and guiding frameworks for streamlining information hand-offs across pre-hospital and hospital settings. This multi-method study explores the current state and potential improvements of technology-enabled pre-hospital to hospital information hand-offs in the State of California (CA). A questionnaire was administered to EMS leaders across the State. Qualitative interviews and focus group discussions were then conducted on two CA county EMS systems to explore potential improvements and to construct a set of principles to guide system development to support emergency care processes. A set of design principles, guidelines, themes, and end-user needs are presented and future research directions discussed

© 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York. Service innovation is focused on customer value creation. At its core, customer centric service innovation is technology-enabled, human-centered, and process-oriented. To profit from such innovation, firms need an integrated cross-disciplinary, holistic method to design and commercialize service innovation. From diverse but interrelated strands of theories from service science, strategic management, organization science and information systems literatures, this article develops a new integrated design method, known as iSIM (integrated Service Innovation Method), for simultaneous service innovation and business model design for sustained customer value co-creation with the firm. Following design science research method, the article theoretically defines and integrates iSIM’s seven constitutive design process-elements: service strategy, customer type / value proposition, service concept, service system, customer experience, service architecture and monetization into a coherent and end-to-end aligned integrated design method. It explains how iSIM would be holistically and iteratively practiced by practitioners, and conceptually exemplifies its utility via telco and Amazon case studies using secondary data. Perspectives on iSIM from selected practitioners are discussed which confirm iSIM’s potential utility for their business. Managerial implications of implementing the iSIM and potential areas for further research are also discussed
