    Living Without a Mobile Phone: An Autoethnography

    This paper presents an autoethnography of my experiences living without a mobile phone. What started as an experiment motivated by a personal need to reduce stress, has resulted in two voluntary mobile phone breaks spread over nine years (i.e., 2002-2008 and 2014-2017). Conducting this autoethnography is the means to assess if the lack of having a phone has had any real impact in my life. Based on formative and summative analyses, four meaningful units or themes were identified (i.e., social relationships, everyday work, research career, and location and security), and judged using seven criteria for successful ethnography from existing literature. Furthermore, I discuss factors that allow me to make the choice of not having a mobile phone, as well as the relevance that the lessons gained from not having a mobile phone have on the lives of people who are involuntarily disconnected from communication infrastructures.Comment: 12 page

    Passive mobile data for studying seasonal tourism mobilities: an application in a Mediterranean Coastal destination

    The article uses passive mobile data to analyse the complex mobilities that occur in a coastal region characterised by seasonal patterns of tourism activity. A large volume of data generated by mobile phone users has been selected and processed to subsequently display the information in the form of visualisations that are useful for transport and tourism research, policy, and practice. More specifically, the analysis consisted of four steps: (1) a dataset containing records for four days—two on summer days and two in winter—was selected, (2) these were aggregated spatially, temporally, and differentiating trips by local residents, national tourists, and international tourists, (3) origindestination matrices were built, and (4) graph-based visualisations were created to provide evidence on the nature of the mobilities affecting the study area. The results of our work provide new evidence of how the analysis of passive mobile data can be useful to study the effects of tourism seasonality in local mobility patterns

    This article is divided into four sections. Section I offers a general description of Burning Man, including its organizers, social structure, and demographics. Section I also describes the Burning Man community and other features that distinguish Burning Man from other mass-gathering events. Section II describes the layers of internal and external social control found at Burning Man, and how they operate at the event. These layers of control include different forms of official law enforcement as well as the intra-community dispute resolution mechanisms employed by the Rangers. In Section III, the core of the article discusses the shortcomings of external deterrence mechanisms and the advantages of the intracommunity social control mechanisms that come from private ordering. Section III further compares Burning Man with other examples of private ordering, including carnivals. Section III concludes with a discussion of the factors that foster participant behavior and the social equilibrium of the Burning Man community. A conclusion is offered as Section IV

    Mobile Applications for Cultural Tourism – Past, Present, and Future. Criteria for a Successful Mobile App

    This publication presents a prototype of a mobile application for cultural tourism. Its main goal is to provide information about tourist sites in a city with a rich historical past and deeprooted traditions, catering to the needs and preferences of contemporary users in terms of functionality and user-friendliness. The paper analyzes contemporary Bulgarian and foreign mobile applications for cultural tourism, emphasizing their advantages over similar applications that were active in the recent past. These advantages include availability, interactivity, and an enhanced user experience. The purpose of the paper is to develop and promote a mobile application that will meet the needs of tourists. The methodology for designing the prototype includes a review and comparative analysis of mobile applications that existed a decade ago, as well as current applications in this field in 2023. Both local applications for Bulgaria and international applications for the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Hungary, and Spain were studied. The study focused on usability and other key characteristics that are similar to the functionality of the developed application. Weaknesses of some of the analyzed applications and problems avoided in the proposed prototype are indicated. The paper also presents the primary features of the developed application, such as its user-friendliness, speed of operation, intuitive design, and easy access to tourist and cultural sites. In the future, with the introduction of various mobile applications in this field, it is expected that users will be greatly facilitated in their search for up-to-date information on cultural and historical sites around the world

    Nowadays the need of people to have the power to control everything is increasing. Due to the technological evolution together with the Internet of things, this is already possible. In this context, the shared vehicles are a good example. With just one click people can use a vehicle from a vehicle sharing eet anywhere, anytime. During the realization of this project the uMDC was developed. It is a small device capable of managing and controlling di erent types of vehicles, with the main focus being the electric bicycles. As a nal conclusion of the project, the results obtained with the uMDC have proved very attractive. During its integration in the electric bicycles, the system was capable of controlling the bicycle's di erent components, as required for the rst prototype.Hoje em dia, a necessidade das pessoas terem controlo sobre tudo está a aumentar. Devido á evolução tecnológica juntamente com a Internet das coisas, isso já é possível. Neste contexto, os veículos partilhados são um bom exemplo disso. Com um simples clique, as pessoas podem usufruir e uma viatura de uma frota de veículos partilhados em qualquer lugar, a qualquer hora. Durante a realização deste projeto, foi desenvolvido o uMDC. Um pequeno ispositivo capaz de gerir e controlar diferentes tipos de veículos, sendo o foco principal as bicicletas elétricas. No nal deste projeto, os resultados obtidos com o uMDC foram bastante satisfatórios. Durante a sua integração nas bicicletas elétricas, o sistema foi capaz de controlar diferentes componentes das mesmas, como requerido para primeiro protótipo

    A Hybrid client-server based technique for navigation in large terrains using mobile devices

    We describe a hybrid client-server technique for remote adaptive streaming and rendering of large terrains in resource-limited mobile devices. The technique has been designed to achieve an interactive rendering performance on a mobile device connected to a low-bandwidth wireless network. The rendering workload is split between the client and the server. The terrain area close to the viewer is rendered in real-time by the client using a hierarchical multiresolution scheme. The terrain located far from the viewer is portrayed as view-dependent impostors, rendered by the server on demand and, then sent to the client. The hybrid technique provides tools to dynamically balance the rendering workload according to the resources available at the client side and to the saturation of the network and server. A prototype has been built and an exhaustive set of experiments covering several platforms, wireless networks and a wide range of viewer velocities has been conducted.
