Aerial identification of flashed over faulty insulator using binary image classification
Flashed over insulator faults are the most significant faults in high voltage line insulators. They are complicated to identify using traditional methods due to their labor-intensive nature. This study proposes a deep learning-based algorithm for detecting flashed over insulator faults in the real time. The algorithm is based on the Resnet 50 architecture, which has been shown to be effective for image classification tasks in the previous studies regarding image analysis. The algorithm is fast, robust and efficient, making it suitable for real-time applications. The algorithm is trained on a dataset of images of flashed over and non-flashed over insulators. This dataset was collected from various transmission lines and National Center of Robotics and Automation, which are located in Pakistan. For validating the effectiveness of the Resnet 50 algorithm, it was compared with the results obtained from the two other widely popular deep learning algorithms, Densenet 121 and VGG 16 (trained and validated on the same dataset). The results showed that the Resnet 50 was able to detect flashed over insulator faults with an accuracy of over 99%. Whereas the Densenet 121 and VGG 16 have achieved an accuracy of less than 51%
Infrared Thermography in Marine Applications
Infrared (IR) thermography has become a powerful tool for basic and applied scientifi c research
and for the application in various fi elds such as industry, environment, military and maritime affairs,
etc. As a „predictive“ maintenance tool, IR thermography has the ability to identify problems before
they occur. It is especially helpful for trouble shooting potential electrical overloads, worn or bad
circuit breakers and buses. IR thermography can also be used to detect bad bearings, shafts,
worn pulleys or any application where heat detection would be benefi cial.
This paper has the intention to familiarize researchers, engineers and sea business staff with
possibilities of applying IR thermography in the fi eld of maritime affairs. Therefore, basic principles
of IR thermography are presented and examples of the tool application are given
Asset Management in Grid Companies Using Integrated Diagnostic Devices
The digitization of power grids envisages a transition to new models of fault diagnosis, repair and maintenance of electric power grid equipment. The most promising tools for implementing advanced production asset management strategies are integrated technologies that are based on robotic diagnostic platforms, various hardware–software instruments and smart data analysis systems. The article analyzes other countries’ experience of developing robotic methods of fault diagnosis and maintenance of overhead power transmission lines, which present a major challenge in terms of monitoring, failure prediction and localized repairs. The Cablewalker robotic system was used as an example for identifying the advantages of integrated diagnostic hardware systems as opposed to traditional methods of power grid equipment maintenance and overhaul. Recommendations are given for adopting the technology in grid companies. During trials of the technology on a 2.34-km section of a power transmission line 112 defects were detected versus three that were identified by means of ‘manual’ inspection. A digital twin of the transmission line was created to manage its technical condition with regard to various risks. The work was supported by Act 211 of the Government of the Russian Federation, contract № 02.A03.21.0006
