    Feature extraction of the weak periodic signal of rolling element bearing’ early fault based on shift invariant sparse coding

    When fault such as pit failure arises in the rolling element bearing the vibration signal of which will take on periodic characteristics, and the abrupt failure of rotating machinery can be avoided effectively if the weak periodic characteristics of the early fault stage is extracted timely. However, the periodic characteristics of bearing’ early weak fault is hard to be extracted usually and the reasons can be boiled to as following: Firstly, the weak periodic signal of rolling element bearing’ early fault stage is buried by the strong background noise. Secondly, the weak fault cannot show the complete shock attenuation impulsive characteristic due to its weak energy, so the traditional wavelet transform would not work effectively if a proper wavelet basis function fitting for analyzing the impulsive characteristics is not selected. To solve the above two problems, a feature extraction method of the weak periodic signal of rolling element bearing’ early fault based on Shift Invariant Sparse Coding (SISC) originating from sparse representation is proposed in the paper. To capture the underlying structure of machinery fault signal, SICS provides an effective basis functions learning scheme by solving the flowing two convex optimization problems iteratively: 1) L1-regularized least squares problem. 2) L2-constrained least squares problem. The fault feature can be probably contained and extracted if optimal latent component is filtered among these basis functions. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified through the corresponding simulation and experiment

    Smart filter aided domain adversarial neural network: An unsupervised domain adaptation method for fault diagnosis in noisy industrial scenarios

    The application of unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA)-based fault diagnosis methods has shown significant efficacy in industrial settings, facilitating the transfer of operational experience and fault signatures between different operating conditions, different units of a fleet or between simulated and real data. However, in real industrial scenarios, unknown levels and types of noise can amplify the difficulty of domain alignment, thus severely affecting the diagnostic performance of deep learning models. To address this issue, we propose an UDA method called Smart Filter-Aided Domain Adversarial Neural Network (SFDANN) for fault diagnosis in noisy industrial scenarios. The proposed methodology comprises two steps. In the first step, we develop a smart filter that dynamically enforces similarity between the source and target domain data in the time-frequency domain. This is achieved by combining a learnable wavelet packet transform network (LWPT) and a traditional wavelet packet transform module. In the second step, we input the data reconstructed by the smart filter into a domain adversarial neural network (DANN). To learn domain-invariant and discriminative features, the learnable modules of SFDANN are trained in a unified manner with three objectives: time-frequency feature proximity, domain alignment, and fault classification. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed SFDANN method based on two fault diagnosis cases: one involving fault diagnosis of bearings in noisy environments and another involving fault diagnosis of slab tracks in a train-track-bridge coupling vibration system, where the transfer task involves transferring from numerical simulations to field measurements. Results show that compared to other representative state of the art UDA methods, SFDANN exhibits superior performance and remarkable stability

    Blind source separation of rolling element bearing’ single channel compound fault based on Shift Invariant Sparse Coding

    The mechanical vibration source signal collected by sensor often includes a variety of internal vibration source of contributions such as gears, bearings, shaft and so on. It is often hoped to achieve effective separation of the source signal in order to obtain better fault diagnosis result. Blind source separation of the failure signal of rolling element bearing is a challenging task due to the above reasons, especially in the case of single channel compound fault. A method of blind source separation of rolling element bearing’s single channel compound fault based on Shift-Invariant Sparse Coding (SISC) is proposed in the paper. The waveform characteristic of different fault signal has some difference in the structure even that the same impulse characteristics of signals are produced by different parts, and the difference can be captured by the SISC method with the following reasons: Firstly, a set of basis functions is trained and obtained by SISC feature self-study method (The number of the basis functions is big necessarily). Then the potential components are constructed using the corresponding obtained basis functions. At last, the clustering operation is carried out using the structural similarity of the potential components, and the clustering signals represent the different vibration source signals. Apply the traditional vibration signal handling method such as envelope demodulation to the obtained clustering signals respectively and better fault diagnosis results are obtained at last

    System modeling is required to deal with the time-varying system dynamics or the experimental data with insufficient information. However, the existing methods cannot construct satisfactory models for rapidly varying systems or severely band-limited signals. This thesis focuses on the new approaches to solve such system modeling problems based on time and frequency-domain information and illustrates their applications in time-varying channel identification and localization system. For the rapid time-varying systems, parameters can be approximated by the cosine series using virtual even periodic functions. Following the orthogonality of the trigonometric functions, the parameter estimation is recursively implemented by estimating the coefficients of each degree of the cosine harmonic term. For the localization system with insufficient frequency components, the spectral characteristics including phase information in frequency domain and the information evaluation in time domain are applied to improve the convergence performance.     This reprint focuses on wear and fatigue analysis, the dynamic properties of coating surfaces in transmission systems, and non-destructive condition monitoring for the health management of transmission systems. Transmission systems play a vital role in various types of industrial structure, including wind turbines, vehicles, mining and material-handling equipment, offshore vessels, and aircrafts. Surface wear is an inevitable phenomenon during the service life of transmission systems (such as on gearboxes, bearings, and shafts), and wear propagation can reduce the durability of the contact coating surface. As a result, the performance of the transmission system can degrade significantly, which can cause sudden shutdown of the whole system and lead to unexpected economic loss and accidents. Therefore, to ensure adequate health management of the transmission system, it is necessary to investigate the friction, vibration, and dynamic properties of its contact coating surface and monitor its operating conditions

    Constructive Incremental Learning for Fault Diagnosis of Rolling Bearings with Ensemble Domain Adaptation

    Given the prevalence of rolling bearing fault diagnosis as a practical issue across various working conditions, the limited availability of samples compounds the challenge. Additionally, the complexity of the external environment and the structure of rolling bearings often manifests faults characterized by randomness and fuzziness, hindering the effective extraction of fault characteristics and restricting the accuracy of fault diagnosis. To overcome these problems, this paper presents a novel approach termed constructive Incremental learning-based ensemble domain adaptation (CIL-EDA) approach. Specifically, it is implemented on stochastic configuration networks (SCN) to constructively improve its adaptive performance in multi-domains. Concretely, a cloud feature extraction method is employed in conjunction with wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) to capture the uncertainty of fault information from multiple resolution aspects. Subsequently, constructive Incremental learning-based domain adaptation (CIL-DA) is firstly developed to enhance the cross-domain learning capability of each hidden node through domain matching and construct a robust fault classifier by leveraging limited labeled data from both target and source domains. Finally, fault diagnosis results are obtained by a majority voting of CIL-EDA which integrates CIL-DA and parallel ensemble learning. Experimental results demonstrate that our CIL-DA outperforms several domain adaptation methods and CIL-EDA consistently outperforms state-of-art fault diagnosis methods in few-shot scenarios
