HILT IV : subject interoperability through building and embedding pilot terminology web services

    Get PDF
A report of work carried out within the JISC-funded HILT Phase IV project, the paper looks at the project's context against the background of other recent and ongoing terminologies work, describes its outcome and conclusions, including technical outcomes and terminological characteristics, and considers possible future research and development directions. The Phase IV project has taken HILT to the point where the launch of an operational support service in the area of subject interoperability is a feasible option and where both investigation of specific needs in this area and practical collaborative work are sensible and feasible next steps. Moving forward requires detailed work, not only on terminology interoperability and associated service delivery issues, but also on service and end user needs and engagement, service sustainability issues, and the practicalities of interworking with other terminology services and projects in UK, Europe, and global contexts

The INEX 2010 Interactive Track: An Overview

    Get PDF
In the paper we present the organization of the INEX 2010 interactive track. For the 2010 experiments the iTrack has gathered data on user search behavior in a collection consisting of book metadata taken from the online bookstore Amazon and the social cataloguing application LibraryThing. The collected data represents traditional bibliographic metadata, user-generated tags and reviews and promotional texts and reviews from publishers and professional reviewers. In this year’s experiments we designed two search task categories, which were set to represent two different stages of work task processes. In addition we let the users create a task of their own, which is used as a control task. In the paper we describe the methods used for data collection and the tasks performed by the participants

In the paper we present the organization of the INEX 2009 interactive track. For the 2009 experiments the iTrack has gathered data on user search behavior in a collection consisting of book metadata taken from the online bookstore Amazon and the social cataloguing application LibraryThing. Thus the data are more structured than in previous years’ experiments, consisting of traditional bibliographic metadata, user-generated tags and reviews and promotional texts and reviews from publishers and professional reviewers. Through monitoring searches based on three different task types the experiment aims at studying how users interact with highly structured data. We describe the methods used for data collection and the tasks performed by the participants. Some preliminary results of the interaction analysis are reported

This paper presents the organization of the INEX 2008 interactive track. In this year’s iTrack we aimed at exploring the value of element retrieval for two different task types, fact-finding and research tasks. Two research groups collected data from 29 test persons, each performing two tasks. We describe the methods used for data collection and the tasks performed by the participants. A general result indicates that test persons were more satisfied when completing research task compared to fact-finding task. In our experiment, test persons regarded the research task easier, were more satisfied with the search results and found more relevant information for the research tasks

Nacional.

ir_metadata: An Extensible Metadata Schema for IR Experiments

The information retrieval (IR) community has a strong tradition of making the computational artifacts and resources available for future reuse, allowing the validation of experimental results. Besides the actual test collections, the underlying run files are often hosted in data archives as part of conferences like TREC, CLEF, or NTCIR. Unfortunately, the run data itself does not provide much information about the underlying experiment. For instance, the single run file is not of much use without the context of the shared task's website or the run data archive. In other domains, like the social sciences, it is good practice to annotate research data with metadata. In this work, we introduce ir_metadata - an extensible metadata schema for TREC run files based on the PRIMAD model. We propose to align the metadata annotations to PRIMAD, which considers components of computational experiments that can affect reproducibility. Furthermore, we outline important components and information that should be reported in the metadata and give evidence from the literature. To demonstrate the usefulness of these metadata annotations, we implement new features in repro_eval that support the outlined metadata schema for the use case of reproducibility studies. Additionally, we curate a dataset with run files derived from experiments with different instantiations of PRIMAD components and annotate these with the corresponding metadata. In the experiments, we cover reproducibility experiments that are identified by the metadata and classified by PRIMAD. With this work, we enable IR researchers to annotate TREC run files and improve the reuse value of experimental artifacts even further.Comment: Resource pape
