    A Measurement-Based Model for Parallel Real-Time Tasks

    Under the federated paradigm of multiprocessor scheduling, a set of processors is reserved for the exclusive use of each real-time task. If tasks are characterized very conservatively (as is typical in safety-critical systems), it is likely that most invocations of the task will have computational demand far below the worst-case characterization, and could have been scheduled correctly upon far fewer processors than were assigned to it assuming the worst-case characterization of its run-time behavior. Provided we could safely determine during run-time when all the processors are going to be needed, for the rest of the time the unneeded processors could be idled in low-energy "sleep" mode, or used for executing non-real time work in the background. In this paper we propose a model for representing parallelizable real-time tasks in a manner that permits us to do so. Our model does not require us to have fine-grained knowledge of the internal structure of the code represented by the task; rather, it characterizes each task by a few parameters that are obtained by repeatedly executing the code under different conditions and measuring the run-times

    Analyzing Conflict Freedom For Multi-threaded Programs With Time Annotations

    Avoiding access conflicts is a major challenge in the design of multi-threaded programs. In the context of real-time systems, the absence of conflicts can be guaranteed by ensuring that no two potentially conflicting accesses are ever scheduled concurrently.In this paper, we analyze programs that carry time annotations specifying the time for executing each statement. We propose a technique for verifying that a multi-threaded program with time annotations is free of access conflicts. In particular, we generate constraints that reflect the possible schedules for executing the program and the required properties. We then invoke an SMT solver in order to verify that no execution gives rise to concurrent conflicting accesses.     Divided we stand: Parallel distributed stack memory management

    We present an overview of the stack-based memory management techniques that we used in our non-deterministic and-parallel Prolog systems: &-Prolog and DASWAM. We believe that the problems associated with non-deterministic and-parallel systems are more general than those encountered in or-parallel and deterministic and-parallel systems, which can be seen as subsets of this more general case. We develop on the previously proposed "marker scheme", lifting some of the restrictions associated with the selection of goals while keeping (virtual) memory consumption down. We also review some of the other problems associated with the stack-based management scheme, such as handling of forward and backward execution, cut, and roll-backs

    Coordination of several robots based on temporal synchronization

The approach is a decoupled method that can coordinate the participating robots in on-line mode. The coordination is achieved through the adjustment of the time evolution of each robot along its original planned geometric path according to the movements of the other robots to assure a collision-free execution of their respective tasks.     Parallel Simulations for Analysing Portfolios of Catastrophic Event Risk

    At the heart of the analytical pipeline of a modern quantitative insurance/reinsurance company is a stochastic simulation technique for portfolio risk analysis and pricing process referred to as Aggregate Analysis. Support for the computation of risk measures including Probable Maximum Loss (PML) and the Tail Value at Risk (TVAR) for a variety of types of complex property catastrophe insurance contracts including Cat eXcess of Loss (XL), or Per-Occurrence XL, and Aggregate XL, and contracts that combine these measures is obtained in Aggregate Analysis. In this paper, we explore parallel methods for aggregate risk analysis. A parallel aggregate risk analysis algorithm and an engine based on the algorithm is proposed. This engine is implemented in C and OpenMP for multi-core CPUs and in C and CUDA for many-core GPUs. Performance analysis of the algorithm indicates that GPUs offer an alternative HPC solution for aggregate risk analysis that is cost effective. The optimised algorithm on the GPU performs a 1 million trial aggregate simulation with 1000 catastrophic events per trial on a typical exposure set and contract structure in just over 20 seconds which is approximately 15x times faster than the sequential counterpart. This can sufficiently support the real-time pricing scenario in which an underwriter analyses different contractual terms and pricing while discussing a deal with a client over the phone.Comment: Proceedings of the Workshop at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC), 2012, 8 page

    Scalable Model-Based Management of Correlated Dimensional Time Series in ModelarDB+

    To monitor critical infrastructure, high quality sensors sampled at a high frequency are increasingly used. However, as they produce huge amounts of data, only simple aggregates are stored. This removes outliers and fluctuations that could indicate problems. As a remedy, we present a model-based approach for managing time series with dimensions that exploits correlation in and among time series. Specifically, we propose compressing groups of correlated time series using an extensible set of model types within a user-defined error bound (possibly zero). We name this new category of model-based compression methods for time series Multi-Model Group Compression (MMGC). We present the first MMGC method GOLEMM and extend model types to compress time series groups. We propose primitives for users to effectively define groups for differently sized data sets, and based on these, an automated grouping method using only the time series dimensions. We propose algorithms for executing simple and multi-dimensional aggregate queries on models. Last, we implement our methods in the Time Series Management System (TSMS) ModelarDB (ModelarDB+). Our evaluation shows that compared to widely used formats, ModelarDB+ provides up to 13.7 times faster ingestion due to high compression, 113 times better compression due to the adaptivity of GOLEMM, 630 times faster aggregates by using models, and close to linear scalability.     Parameterized events for designing real-time reactive systems

    The goal of the thesis is the introduction of parameterized events in TROM methodology, an object-oriented formalism for the development of real-time reactive systems. Without parameterization, a large number of events representing similar stimuli or responses are required for modeling large systems, especially in telephony and protocol application domains. The syntax and semantics for parameterized events are conservative extensions of the syntax and semantics of events in TROM formalism. The thesis addresses the impact of parameterization on existing tools of TROMLAB, a framework for practicing TROM formalism, and discusses the reengineering of some of the tools in TROMLAB. The expressive power of the extended formalism is illustrated using the ATM-ABR protocol. The ATM model is validated in SDL, by mapping its TROM model into SDL and executing the SDL model
