An Innovative, Multidisciplinary Educational Program in Interactive Information Storage and Retrieval

There exists a large number of large-scale bibliographic Information Storage and Retrieval Systems containing large amounts of valuable data of interest in a wide variety of research applications. These systems are not used to capacity because the end users, i.e., the researchers, have not been trained in the techniques of accessing such systems. This thesis describes the development of a transportable, university-level course in methods of querying on-line interactive Information Storage and Retrieval systems as a solution to this problem. This course was designed to instruct upper division science and engineering students to enable these end users to directly access such systems. The course is designed to be taught by instructors who are not specialists in either computer science or research skills. It is independent of any particular IS and R system or computer hardware. The project is sponsored by NASA and conducted by the University of Southwestern Louisiana and Southern University

Technology assessment of advanced automation for space missions

Six general classes of technology requirements derived during the mission definition phase of the study were identified as having maximum importance and urgency, including autonomous world model based information systems, learning and hypothesis formation, natural language and other man-machine communication, space manufacturing, teleoperators and robot systems, and computer science and technology

One-Way Versus Two-Way Videotex

One-way and two-way videotex are often claimed to be more or less competing services, particularly if dedicated channels are used for the broadcast variety. In this paper we will try to dispel this notion. We will try to demonstrate that not only are the two services somewhat complementary in nature but that videotex will increase its potential by choosing a balanced combination of the two services. We also study the likely market penetration of videotex based on the speed of penetration of other communications-oriented services in the past and draw some conclusions how they might influence the market penetration of videotex systems and services

The place of cataloguing and classification in the curricula of South African universities

Bibliography: pages 361-372.The aim of this study is to determine the place of cataloguing and classification in the library and information science curricula of South African universities today, and to determine whether, in compiling the syllabus comprising bibliographic description and subject analysis, new developments and changes are being taken into consideration. With this in mind, attention has been given to the following: (a) Developments in general have been reconstructed by means of a review of the history of cataloguing and classification, from ancient to present times; (b) a review of the comprehensive development of education for librarianship overseas and in South Africa; and (c) an investigation of the present position of bibliographic description and subject analysis in the curricula of library and information science of South African universities
