    Programmability and Performance Portability Aspects of Heterogeneous Multi-/Manycore Systems

    International audienceWe discuss three complementary approaches that can provide both portability and an increased level of abstraction for the programming of heterogeneous multicore systems. Together, these approaches also support performance portability, as currently investigated in the EU FP7 project PEPPHER. In particular, we consider (1) a library-based approach, here represented by the integration of the SkePU C++ skeleton programming library with the StarPU runtime system for dynamic scheduling and dynamic selection of suitable execution units for parallel tasks; (2) a language-based approach, here represented by the Offload-C++ high-level language extensions and Offload compiler to generate platform-specific code; and (3) a component-based approach, specifically the PEPPHER component system for annotating user-level application components with performance metadata, thereby preparing them for performance-aware composition. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches and show how they could complement each other in an integrational programming framework for heterogeneous multicore systems

    GPU NTC Process Variation Compensation with Voltage Stacking

    Near-threshold computing (NTC) has the potential to significantly improve efficiency in high throughput architectures, such as general-purpose computing on graphic processing unit (GPGPU). Nevertheless, NTC is more sensitive to process variation (PV) as it complicates power delivery. We propose GPU stacking, a novel method based on voltage stacking, to manage the effects of PV and improve the power delivery simultaneously. To evaluate our methodology, we first explore the design space of GPGPUs in the NTC to find a suitable baseline configuration and then apply GPU stacking to mitigate the effects of PV. When comparing with an equivalent NTC GPGPU without PV management, we achieve 37% more performance on average. When considering high production volume, our approach shifts all the chips closer to the nominal non-PV case, delivering on average (across chips) ˜80 % of the performance of nominal NTC GPGPU, whereas when not using our technique, chips would have ˜50 % of the nominal performance. We also show that our approach can be applied on top of multifrequency domain designs, improving the overall performance

    Parallel Architectures for Many-Core Systems-On-Chip in Deep Sub-Micron Technology

    Despite the several issues faced in the past, the evolutionary trend of silicon has kept its constant pace. Today an ever increasing number of cores is integrated onto the same die. Unfortunately, the extraordinary performance achievable by the many-core paradigm is limited by several factors. Memory bandwidth limitation, combined with inefficient synchronization mechanisms, can severely overcome the potential computation capabilities. Moreover, the huge HW/SW design space requires accurate and flexible tools to perform architectural explorations and validation of design choices. In this thesis we focus on the aforementioned aspects: a flexible and accurate Virtual Platform has been developed, targeting a reference many-core architecture. Such tool has been used to perform architectural explorations, focusing on instruction caching architecture and hybrid HW/SW synchronization mechanism. Beside architectural implications, another issue of embedded systems is considered: energy efficiency. Near Threshold Computing is a key research area in the Ultra-Low-Power domain, as it promises a tenfold improvement in energy efficiency compared to super-threshold operation and it mitigates thermal bottlenecks. The physical implications of modern deep sub-micron technology are severely limiting performance and reliability of modern designs. Reliability becomes a major obstacle when operating in NTC, especially memory operation becomes unreliable and can compromise system correctness. In the present work a novel hybrid memory architecture is devised to overcome reliability issues and at the same time improve energy efficiency by means of aggressive voltage scaling when allowed by workload requirements. Variability is another great drawback of near-threshold operation. The greatly increased sensitivity to threshold voltage variations in today a major concern for electronic devices. We introduce a variation-tolerant extension of the baseline many-core architecture. By means of micro-architectural knobs and a lightweight runtime control unit, the baseline architecture becomes dynamically tolerant to variations

    Radio-Astronomical Imaging on Accelerators

    Imaging is considered the most compute-intensive and therefore most challenging part of a radio-astronomical data-processing pipeline. To reach the high dynamic ranges imposed by the high sensitivity and large field of view of the new generation of radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), we need to be able to correct for direction-independent effects (DIEs) such as the curvature of the earth as well as for direction-dependent time-varying effects (DDEs) such as those caused by the ionosphere during imaging. The novel Image-Domain gridding (IDG) algorithm was designed to avoid the performance bottlenecks of traditional imaging algorithms. We implement, optimize, and analyze the performance and energy efficiency of IDG on a variety of hardware platforms to find which platform is the best for IDG. We analyze traditional CPUs, as well as several accelerators architectures. IDG alleviates the limitations of traditional imaging algorithms while it enables the advantages of GPU acceleration: better performance at lower power consumption. The hardware-software co-design has resulted in a highly efficient imager. This makes IDG on GPUs an ideal candidate for meeting the computational and energy efficiency constraints of the SKA. IDG has been integrated with a widely-used astronomical imager (WSClean) and is now being used in production by a variety of different radio observatories such as LOFAR and the MWA. It is not only faster and more energy-efficient than its competitors, but it also produces better quality images
