    Byzantine Fault Tolerance for Distributed Systems

    The growing reliance on online services imposes a high dependability requirement on the computer systems that provide these services. Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) is a promising technology to solidify such systems for the much needed high dependability. BFT employs redundant copies of the servers and ensures that a replicated system continues providing correct services despite the attacks on a small portion of the system. In this dissertation research, I developed novel algorithms and mechanisms to control various types of application nondeterminism and to ensure the long-term reliability of BFT systems via a migration-based proactive recovery scheme. I also investigated a new approach to significantly improve the overall system throughput by enabling concurrent processing using Software Transactional Memory (STM). Controlling application nondeterminism is essential to achieve strong replica consistency because the BFT technology is based on state-machine replication, which requires deterministic operation of each replica. Proactive recovery is necessary to ensure that the fundamental assumption of using the BFT technology is not violated over long term, i.e., less than one-third of replicas remain correct. Without proactive recovery, more and more replicas will be compromised under continuously attacks, which would render BFT ineffective.     Compiler assisted chekpointing of message-passing applications in heterogeneous environments

    [Resumen] With the evolution of high performance computing towards heterogeneous, massively parallel systems, parallel applications have developed new checkpoint and restart necessities, Whether due to a failure in the execution or to a migration of the processes to different machines, checkpointing tools must be able to operate in heterogeneous environments. However, some of the data manipulated by a parallel application are not truly portable. Examples of these include opaque state (e.g. data structures for communications support) or diversity of interfaces for a single feature (e.g. communications, I/O). Directly manipulating the underlying ad-hoc representations renders checkpointing tools incapable of working on different environments. Portable checkpointers usually work around portability issues at the cost of transparency: the user must provide information such as what data needs to be stored, where to store it, or where to checkpoint. CPPC (ComPiler for Portable Checkpointing) is a checkpointing tool designed to feature both portability and transparency, while preserving the scalability of the executed applications. It is made up of a library and a compiler. The CPPC library contains routines for variable level checkpointing, using portable code and protocols. The CPPC compiler achieves transparency by relieving the user from time-consuming tasks, such as performing code analyses and adding instrumentation code

    Programming Languages for Distributed Computing Systems

    When distributed systems first appeared, they were programmed in traditional sequential languages, usually with the addition of a few library procedures for sending and receiving messages. As distributed applications became more commonplace and more sophisticated, this ad hoc approach became less satisfactory. Researchers all over the world began designing new programming languages specifically for implementing distributed applications. These languages and their history, their underlying principles, their design, and their use are the subject of this paper. We begin by giving our view of what a distributed system is, illustrating with examples to avoid confusion on this important and controversial point. We then describe the three main characteristics that distinguish distributed programming languages from traditional sequential languages, namely, how they deal with parallelism, communication, and partial failures. Finally, we discuss 15 representative distributed languages to give the flavor of each. These examples include languages based on message passing, rendezvous, remote procedure call, objects, and atomic transactions, as well as functional languages, logic languages, and distributed data structure languages. The paper concludes with a comprehensive bibliography listing over 200 papers on nearly 100 distributed programming languages
