    Mechanism design for spatio-temporal request satisfaction in mobile networks

    Mobile agents participating in geo-presence-capable crowdsourcing applications should be presumed rational, competitive, and willing to deviate from their routes if given the right incentive. In this paper, we design a mechanism that takes into consideration this rationality for request satisfaction in such applications. We propose the Geo-temporal Request Satisfaction (GRS) problem to be that of finding the optimal assignment of requests with specific spatio-temporal characteristics to competitive mobile agents subject to spatio-temporal constraints. The objective of the GRS problem is to maximize the total profit of the system subject to our rationality assumptions. We define the problem formally, prove that it is NP-Complete, and present a practical solution mechanism, which we prove to be convergent, and which we evaluate experimentally.National Science Foundation (1012798, 0952145, 0820138, 0720604, 0735974

    Load-balancing rendezvous approach for mobility-enabled adaptive energy-efficient data collection in WSNs

    Copyright © 2020 KSII The tradeoff between energy conservation and traffic balancing is a dilemma problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). By analyzing the intrinsic relationship between cluster properties and long distance transmission energy consumption, we characterize three node sets of the cluster as a theoretical foundation to enhance high performance of WSNs, and propose optimal solutions by introducing rendezvous and Mobile Elements (MEs) to optimize energy consumption for prolonging the lifetime of WSNs. First, we exploit an approximate method based on the transmission distance from the different node to an ME to select suboptimal Rendezvous Point (RP) on the trajectory for ME to collect data. Then, we define data transmission routing sequence and model rendezvous planning for the cluster. In order to achieve optimization of energy consumption, we specifically apply the economic theory called Diminishing Marginal Utility Rule (DMUR) and create the utility function with regard to energy to develop an adaptive energy consumption optimization framework to achieve energy efficiency for data collection. At last, Rendezvous Transmission Algorithm (RTA) is proposed to better tradeoff between energy conservation and traffic balancing. Furthermore, via collaborations among multiple MEs, we design Two-Orbit Back-Propagation Algorithm (TOBPA) which concurrently handles load imbalance phenomenon to improve the efficiency of data collection. The simulation results show that our solutions can improve energy efficiency of the whole network and reduce the energy consumption of sensor nodes, which in turn prolong the lifetime of WSNs

    Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge, and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control, learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity, localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature, and identify topics that require more research attention in the future

    Ferry–Based Directional Forwarding Mechanism for Improved Network Life-Time in Cluster-Based Wireless Sensor Network

    Considerable energy saving can be achieved with mobility-based wireless sensor networks (WSN's), where a mobile node (ferry) visits sensing nodes in a network to collect sensed data. However, the critical issues of such WSN's are limited networks lifetime and high data latency, these critical issues are due to the slow mobility and relatively long route distance for ferries to collect and forward data to the sink. Incorporating ferries in WSNs eliminates the need for multi-hop forwarding of data, and as a result, reduce energy consumption at sensing nodes. In this paper, we introduce the One Hop Cluster-Head Algorithm (OHCH), where a subset of ferries serve as cluster heads (CH), travel between nodes with short distance mobility, collect data originated from sources, and transfer it to the sink with minimum hop count possible, this approach can achieve more balance between network energy saving and data collection delay, also, it is an efficient design to combine between ferries and noise

    Survey of location-centric target tracking with mobile elements in wireless sensor networks

By distinguishing; location-centric methods and detection-centric methods, the current; research status of the location-centric target tracking methods were; reviewed. The properties and application fields of different solutions; were analyzed and compared. Although the existing solutions can; significantly improve tracking quality and reduce energy consumption of; the whole network, there are also some problems.     Data Gathering with Tour Length-Constrained

    In this paper, given a single mobile element and a time deadline, we investigate the problem of designing the mobile element tour to visit subset of nodes, such that the length of this tour is bounded by the time deadline and the communication cost between nodes outside and inside the tour is minimized. The nodes that the mobile element tour visits, works as cache points that store the data of the other nodes. Several algorithms in the literature have tackled this problem by separating two phases; the construction of the mobile element tour from the computation of the forwarding trees to the cache points. In this paper, we propose algorithmic solutions that alternate between these phases and iteratively improves the outcome of each phase based on the result of the other. We compare the resulting performance of our solutions with that of previous work

    Lifetime Maximization of Sensor Networks Through Optimal Data Collection Scheduling of Mobile Sink

    The problem of maximizing lifetime of a sensor network is still challenging mainly due to the stringent delay-deadline of real-time applications and heterogeneity of sensor devices. The problem is further complicated when the network contains many obstacles. In maximizing network lifetime, existing literature works either merely address issues of application delay-deadline and presence of obstacles, or analyze primitive data collection approaches for such an environment. In this paper, we formulate optimal data collection schedule of a mobile sink in an obstructed sensor network as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. The proposed data collection scheduling finds an optimal set of rendezvous nodes over a preformed Starfish routing backbone, and corresponding sojourn duration so as to maximize the network lifetime while maintaining delay-deadline constraint in an obstructed network. The proposed Starfish-scheduling ensures a loop-free traveling path for a mobile sink across the network. The results of performance evaluation, performed in network simulator-2, depict the suitability of Starfish scheduling as it outperforms state-of-the-art-works in terms of extending network lifetime and data delivery throughput as well as reducing average end-to-end delay
