A Survey of Ocean Simulation and Rendering Techniques in Computer Graphics
This paper presents a survey of ocean simulation and rendering methods in
computer graphics. To model and animate the ocean's surface, these methods
mainly rely on two main approaches: on the one hand, those which approximate
ocean dynamics with parametric, spectral or hybrid models and use empirical
laws from oceanographic research. We will see that this type of methods
essentially allows the simulation of ocean scenes in the deep water domain,
without breaking waves. On the other hand, physically-based methods use
Navier-Stokes Equations (NSE) to represent breaking waves and more generally
ocean surface near the shore. We also describe ocean rendering methods in
computer graphics, with a special interest in the simulation of phenomena such
as foam and spray, and light's interaction with the ocean surface
Improvements on a simple muscle-based 3D face for realistic facial expressions
Facial expressions play an important role in face-to-face communication. With the development of personal computers capable of rendering high quality graphics, computer facial animation has produced more and more realistic facial expressions to enrich human-computer communication. In this paper, we present a simple muscle-based 3D face model that can produce realistic facial expressions in real time. We extend Waters' (1987) muscle model to generate bulges and wrinkles and to improve the combination of multiple muscle actions. Dangerous creatures of the Maltese sea : injuries and treatment : part 2
This is the second of a two-part article intended
to give information about different organisms which
inhabit the Maltese sea and which are potentially
harmful. Doctors working in the primary health setup
and sometimes also in secondary care are often faced
with injuries related to these organisms. The nature of
the injury and its treatment is then discussed. Treatment
however is not evidenced based as little if any studies
have been conducted in this field of medicine. After the
first article considered venomous organisms, this second
article will review sea creatures that may cause injury

Kumataro Ito, Japanese Artist on Board the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries Steamer Albatross During the Philippine Expedition, 1907–1910
Kumataro Ito produced hundreds of beautiful color paintings of fishes and invertebrates during and after the 1907-10 Philippine Expeditin of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries Steamer Albatross. The paintings are housed in the files of the Divisions of Fishes and Mollusks, United States National Museum of Natural History, and Smithsonian Institution Archives, Washington, D.C. Few of those paintings have been published in color, but many have been publishes in black and white. Two years after the expedition, Ito came to Washington, D.C., in 1912 for an extended period to render final paintings based on preliminary color sketches made during the expedition. He did not completly render all the sketches during his stay, probably because he was asked to produced a large number of black-and-white illustrations of Philippine fishes, and a few of North American fishes. Most of the black-and-white illustrations have been published. Few publications containing Ito's Philippine and North American illustrations have acknowledged him. The very little that is known about Ito's life is discussed, examples of his black-and-white and colored fish paintings are reproduced, and his previously unacknowledged illustrations in various publications are herein acknowledged.
Another Japanese artist, Yasui, about whom almost nothing is known, joined the Albatross during Ito's second tour on board the ship. It appears, with few exceptions, that Yasui produced only preliminary color sketches of fishes, which, if rendered as final paintings, were done by Ito
Multi-touch 3D Exploratory Analysis of Ocean Flow Models
Modern ocean flow simulations are generating increasingly complex, multi-layer 3D ocean flow models. However, most researchers are still using traditional 2D visualizations to visualize these models one slice at a time. Properly designed 3D visualization tools can be highly effective for revealing the complex, dynamic flow patterns and structures present in these models. However, the transition from visualizing ocean flow patterns in 2D to 3D presents many challenges, including occlusion and depth ambiguity. Further complications arise from the interaction methods required to navigate, explore, and interact with these 3D datasets. We present a system that employs a combination of stereoscopic rendering, to best reveal and illustrate 3D structures and patterns, and multi-touch interaction, to allow for natural and efficient navigation and manipulation within the 3D environment. Exploratory visual analysis is facilitated through the use of a highly-interactive toolset which leverages a smart particle system. Multi-touch gestures allow users to quickly position dye emitting tools within the 3D model. Finally, we illustrate the potential applications of our system through examples of real world significance
