    Reliability-based design optimization using kriging surrogates and subset simulation

    The aim of the present paper is to develop a strategy for solving reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) problems that remains applicable when the performance models are expensive to evaluate. Starting with the premise that simulation-based approaches are not affordable for such problems, and that the most-probable-failure-point-based approaches do not permit to quantify the error on the estimation of the failure probability, an approach based on both metamodels and advanced simulation techniques is explored. The kriging metamodeling technique is chosen in order to surrogate the performance functions because it allows one to genuinely quantify the surrogate error. The surrogate error onto the limit-state surfaces is propagated to the failure probabilities estimates in order to provide an empirical error measure. This error is then sequentially reduced by means of a population-based adaptive refinement technique until the kriging surrogates are accurate enough for reliability analysis. This original refinement strategy makes it possible to add several observations in the design of experiments at the same time. Reliability and reliability sensitivity analyses are performed by means of the subset simulation technique for the sake of numerical efficiency. The adaptive surrogate-based strategy for reliability estimation is finally involved into a classical gradient-based optimization algorithm in order to solve the RBDO problem. The kriging surrogates are built in a so-called augmented reliability space thus making them reusable from one nested RBDO iteration to the other. The strategy is compared to other approaches available in the literature on three academic examples in the field of structural mechanics.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables.     Active suspension design for a Large Space Structure ground test facility

    The expected future high performance requirements for Large Space Structures (LSS) enforce technology innovations such as active vibration damping techniques e.g., by means of structure sensors and actuators. The implementation of new technologies like that requires an interactive and integrated structural and control design with an increased effort in hardware validation by ground testing. During the technology development phase generic system tests will be most important covering verification and validation aspects up to the preparation and definition of relevant space experiments. For many applications using advanced designs it is deemed necessary to improve existing testing technology by further reducing disturbances and gravity coupling effects while maintaining high performance reliability. A key issue in this context is the improvement of suspension techniques. The ideal ground test facility satisfying these requirements completely will never be found. The highest degree of reliability will always be obtained by passive suspension methods taking into account severe performance limitations such as non-zero rigid body modes, restriction of degrees of freedom of motion and frequency response limitations. Passive compensation mechanisms, e.g., zero-spring-rate mechanisms, either require large moving masses or they are limited with respect to low-frequency performance by friction, stiction or other non-linear effects. With active suspensions these limitations can be removed to a large extent thereby increasing the range of applications.     An incremental shifting vector approach for reliability-based design optimization

This paper proposes a decoupling algorithm for reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) with high performance in terms of efficiency and convergence, which provides an effective tool for reliability design of many complex structures. The algorithm proceeds by performing a shifting vector calculation and then solving a deterministic design optimization in each step, and eventually converges to the optimal solution. An incremental shifting strategy is proposed to ensure stable convergence in the iteration process. In each step, the shifting vector preserves the information from the previous step, and only an adjustment is made for it through a shifting vector increment. A computation method is given for the shifting vector increment, avoiding solving an optimization problem during the reliability analysis and thus greatly reducing the computational cost of the iteration process. Six numerical examples and two engineering applications are presented to validate the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper

    Model based decision support for planning of road maintenance

    In this article we describe a Decision Support Model, based on Operational Research methods, for the multi-period planning of maintenance of bituminous pavements. This model is a tool for the road manager to assist in generating an optimal maintenance plan for a road. Optimal means: minimising the Net Present Value of maintenance costs, while the plan is acceptable in terms of technical admissibility, resulting quality, etc. Global restrictions such as budget restrictions can also be imposed.\ud \ud Adequate grouping of maintenance activities in view of quantity discounts is an important aspect of our model. Our approach is to reduce the complexity of the optimisation by hierarchical structuring in four levels. In the lowest two levels maintenance per lane sector is considered, first with an unbounded planning horizon and next with a bounded planning horizon and time-windows for maintenance. The grouping of maintenance activities for a specific road is the topic of the third level. At the fourth level, which we will not consider in this article, the problem of optimal assignment of the available maintenance budgets over a set of roads or road sections takes place. Here, some results are presented to demonstrate the effects of grouping and to show that this hierarchical approach gives rise to improvements compared with previous work

This presentation briefly reviews the history of structural optimization and its application in civil engineering. Structural topology optimization and surrogate model-based optimization approach together with metaheuristic algorithms is discussed in more detail. The relation of structural optimization with performance based and life-cycle based structural design is illustrated through some of our research work on reliability-based design optimization and damage-reduction optimum deign of structural system. These works provide some optimization methodology, design concept and numerical algorithms, which may facilitate the performance based and life-cycle based structural engineering

This framework can serve to highlight country-specific strengths in addressing environmental challenges in a way that best fosters growth and jobs.
