    Firefly Algorithm: Recent Advances and Applications

    Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms, especially those based on swarm intelligence, have attracted much attention in the last ten years. Firefly algorithm appeared in about five years ago, its literature has expanded dramatically with diverse applications. In this paper, we will briefly review the fundamentals of firefly algorithm together with a selection of recent publications. Then, we discuss the optimality associated with balancing exploration and exploitation, which is essential for all metaheuristic algorithms. By comparing with intermittent search strategy, we conclude that metaheuristics such as firefly algorithm are better than the optimal intermittent search strategy. We also analyse algorithms and their implications for higher-dimensional optimization problems.Comment: 15 page

    CONTROL STRATEGIES OF DC MICROGRID TO ENABLE A MORE WIDE-SCALE ADOPTION

    Microgrids are gaining popularity in part for their ability to support increased penetration of distributed renewable energy sources, aiming to meet energy demand and overcome global warming concerns. DC microgrid, though appears promising, introduces many challenges in the design of control systems in order to ensure a reliable, secure and economical operation. To enable a wider adoption of DC microgrid, this dissertation examines to combine the characteristics and advantages of model predictive control (MPC) and distributed droop control into a hierarchy and fully autonomous control of the DC microgrid. In addition, new maximum power point tracking technique (MPPT) for solar power and active power decoupling technique for the inverter are presented to improve the efficiency and reliability of the DC microgrid. With the purpose of eliminating the oscillation around the maximum power point (MPP), an improved MPPT technique was proposed by adding a steady state MPP determination algorithm after the adaptive perturb and observe method. This control method is proved independent with the environmental conditions and has much smaller oscillations around the MPP compared to existing ones. Therefore, it helps increase the energy harvest efficiency of the DC microgrid with less continuous DC power ripple. A novel hierarchy strategy consisting of two control loops is proposed to the DC microgrid in study, which is composed of two PV boost converters, two battery bi-directional converters and one multi-level packed-u-cell inverter with grid connected. The primary loop task is the control of each energy unit in the DC microgrid based on model predictive current control. Compared with traditional PI controllers, MPC speeds up the control loop since it predicts error before the switching signal is applied to the converter. It is also free of tuning through the minimization of a flexible user-defined cost function. Thus, the proposed primary loop enables the system to be expandable by adding additional energy generation units without affecting the existing ones. Moreover, the maximum power point tracking and battery energy management of each energy unit are included in this loop. The proposed MPC also achieves unity power factor, low grid current total harmonics distortion. The secondary loop based on the proposed autonomous droop control identifies the operation modes for each converter: current source converter (CSC) or voltage source converter (VSC). To reduce the dependence on the high bandwidth communication line, the DC bus voltage is utilized as the trigger signal to the change of operation modes. With the sacrifice of small variations of bus voltage, a fully autonomous control can be realized. The proposed distributed droop control of different unit converters also eliminates the potential conflicts when more than two converters compete for the VSC mode. Single-phase inverter systems in the DC microgrid have low frequency power ripple, which adversely affects the system reliability and performance. A power decoupling circuit based on the proposed dual buck converters are proposed to address the challenges. The topology is free of shoot-through and deadtime concern and the control is independent with that of the main power stage circuit, which makes the design simpler and more reliable. Moreover, the design of both PI and MPC controllers are discussed and compared. While, both methods present satisfied decoupling performances on the system, the proposed MPC is simpler to be implemented. In conclusion, the DC microgrid may be more widely adopted in the future with the proposed control strategies to address the current challenges that hinder its further development

    Performance Analysis Stability Of Speed Control Of BLDC Motor Using PID-BAT Algorithm In Electric Vehicle

    The research on the development of electric vehicles includes such as power electronics, energy storage capability that the higher the battery, reducing fuel emissions, and the motor efficiency.  The electric motor efficiency requires the automatic control on the main parameters such as speed, position, and acceleration.  The performance setting of speed Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor can be improved by using the controller Proportional Integral Derivative (PID), a combination of PID using nature inspired optimization algorithms such as Bat Algorithm (BA). BA is one of the optimization algorithm that mimics the behavior of bats on the move using a vibration or sound pulses emitted a very loud (echolocation) and listen to the echoes that bounce back from the object to determine the circumstances surrounding vicinity   In this paper, simulate of Bat Algorithm to find the best value PID controller parameter to speed control BLDC motor  and analyze performance such as the value of overshoot, steady state. The result  simulation shows that values for the PID parameters without using algorithm bat is Kp = 208.1177, Ki = 1767, and Kd = -8.6025. While using the algorithm bat got value Kp = 5.4303e+04, Ki = -1.3059e+06, and Kd = 3.0193e+04. The performance of the motor obtained through value rise time of  0. 282,  settling time of 1.5, overshoot  value  of 20.5%  and the peak value of  1.21.

    Micro-Switch Design and Its Optimization Using Pattern Search Algorithm for Application in Reconfigurable Antenna

    This chapter reports the design and optimization algorithm of metal-contact RF microswitch. Various important evolutionary optimization techniques that can be used to optimize non-linear and even non-differentiable types of radio frequency (RF) circuit’s problems are also reviewed. The transient response of the proposed switch shows displacement time (i.e., squeezed-film damping effect) of 5.0 μs and pull-in voltage varying from 9.0 to 9.25 V. Primarily, the switch exhibits insertion loss of 0.15 to 0.51 dB in on-position and isolation of 75.96 to 35.83 dB in off-position at 0.1–10 GHz. Also, the proposed RF switch equivalent circuit and layout are validated in ADS software which was earlier simulated in HFSS. A pattern search (PS) algorithm is used to optimize RF characteristics of the proposed switch after a brief review of the different optimization techniques. After optimization, the switch shows decrement in insertion loss and increment in isolation at 0.1–10 GHz. Further, two such optimized switches are introduced on the defected ground structure (DGS) antenna to make it reconfigurable in terms of frequency. Reconfigurable antenna (RA) is simulated using HFSS software and simulation results are verified by showing the mark of agreement with the fabrication results. The novelty in the proposed design is due to dual-band behavior and better resonance performance than antennas available in the literature. Attractions of proposed RA are its miniaturization and its utility in IEEE US S-(2.0–4.0 GHz) and C-(4.0–8.0 GHz) band
