Entrepreneurship tendencies of university students are nearly ubiquitous, while there has been little analysis of the effects of social media using on entrepreneurship tendencies in the literature. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between thehabit of social media usingand entrepreneurship tendencies of university students. The research problem involves two variables. The first one is social media which are an important determinant of social and business life. The second one is the tendency of candidates who wish to become entrepreneurs. The sample group consisted of students, who take lesson of entrepreneurship, from Mersin and Ahi Evran Universities and took place during the academic year of 2014-2015. The data was collected through an online questionnaire that is reformed by authors with reference to Chye-Koh (1996), Quan-Haase and Young (2010), as 60 items, and then 567 students take part in the sample with convenience sampling method. There are two suitable methods that could have been used for this research; the correlation and regression analyses. The data gathered has been analyzed using statistical packaged software and the results will be introduced with suggestions and comments. The validity and reliability of the data collection tool has been confirmed after analyzing the collected data with statistical methods (p<0,05 and p<0,01). The results are interpreted within the framework of the research problem. As a result of the conducted analysis, statistical significant relationships were found between the two variables (r:0,474; p<0,01). Finally, the regression analysis results are seen important for researchers, professionals, and those interested in these fields

Content Analysis of Vitiligo Portrayal on Social Media

    Get PDF
Given that vitiligo affects a small percentage of the world population, and its affects are not widely known, there is an increasing need to learn of its effects on those with vitiligo, both physical and psychological. Social media has become an influential platform to spread awareness and build confidence in those with vitiligo. This study aims to find how vitiligo is portrayed through social media using content analysis procedures. This is a cross-sectional content analysis that utilized a codebook to analyze Instagram posts. The results were analyzed by interrater reliability and frequency for each coder. The findings of this content analysis show a wide range for interrater reliability based on objective and subjective categories. The variable frequencies showed that most of the posts were of younger white females with moderate amounts of clothing and varying degrees of strength of contrast over a small area and varying amount of body shown in the posts. Future research should employ alternative data collection methods, such as in-depth interviews, to understand study variables at a deeper level. Additionally, pharmacists should be aware and educated about mental illness and other comorbid conditions associated with vitiligo diagnoses

Social Media and Perceptions of Sexual Consent: Development and Psychometric Assessment of Two Consent Measures

    Get PDF
Background. Preliminary qualitative research suggests some college students believe sexual consent can be communicated and interpreted in Social settings, such as parties or bars, and in contexts lacking face-to-face interaction like text messages and Social media content. Previous sexual consent researchers have described perceptions of consent that occur in Social settings as “outside the bedroom” consent. The belief that sexual consent can be interpreted from Social media content or that accepting an alcoholic beverage from someone at a bar is indicative of sexual consent is problematic and warrants further study. Current validated consent scales are limited and do not assess perceptions or beliefs regarding “outside the bedroom” consent as they primarily focus on consent that occurs in the moments right before sexual behavior occurs. Purpose. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to develop and psychometrically assess two sexual consent scales that measure consent beliefs and consent perceptions respectively. The Social Media Consent Myths Scale (SMCMS) and the External Consent Scale – Revised (ECSR) were rigorously developed utilizing a multi-phase research design consisting of a mixed methods approach with three phases of data collection. Methods. In Phase 1, college students (N=104) pilot-tested both measures, with a subset of students (n=10) recruited to provide qualitative feedback via focus groups. Phase 2 (N=75) comprised additional item refinement for both measures. Phase 3 (N=695) constituted psychometric assessment of the measures via reliability and validity analyses. Results. Results provide support for the validity and reliability of both newly developed scales. The SMCMS measures endorsement of the belief that consent can be derived based on a person’s Social media content. The ECSR measures how a person communicated their consent during their most recent consensual sexual experience. Conclusions. Both the SMCMS and ECSR are valid tools that can be used to assess college students’ beliefs and perceptions regarding consent in an effort to create sexual assault prevention education (SAPE) programs that are culturally relevant to students and address common false beliefs regarding consent. Additionally, these measures could be utilized as evaluative mechanisms to assess whether SAPE programs successfully change students’ consent beliefs and behaviors

Opportunities and challenges of geospatial analysis for promoting urban livability in the era of big data and machine learning

    Get PDF
Urban systems involve a multitude of closely intertwined components, which are more measurable than before due to new sensors, data collection, and spatio-temporal analysis methods. Turning these data into knowledge to facilitate planning efforts in addressing current challenges of urban complex systems requires advanced interdisciplinary analysis methods, such as urban informatics or urban data science. Yet, by applying a purely data-driven approach, it is too easy to get lost in the ‘forest’ of data, and to miss the ‘trees’ of successful, livable cities that are the ultimate aim of urban planning. This paper assesses how geospatial data, and urban analysis, using a mixed methods approach, can help to better understand urban dynamics and human behavior, and how it can assist planning efforts to improve livability. Based on reviewing state-of-the-art research the paper goes one step further and also addresses the potential as well as limitations of new data sources in urban analytics to get a better overview of the whole ‘forest’ of these new data sources and analysis methods. The main discussion revolves around the reliability of using big data from social media platforms or sensors, and how information can be extracted from massive amounts of data through novel analysis methods, such as machine learning, for better-informed decision making aiming at urban livability improvement
