    3D Reconstruction of Building Rooftop and Power Line Models in Right-of-Ways Using Airborne LiDAR Data

    The research objectives aimed to achieve thorough the thesis are to develop methods for reconstructing models of building and PL objects of interest in the power line (PL) corridor area from airborne LiDAR data. For this, it is mainly concerned with the model selection problem for which model is more optimal in representing the given data set. This means that the parametric relations and geometry of object shapes are unknowns and optimally determined by the verification of hypothetical models. Therefore, the proposed method achieves high adaptability to the complex geometric forms of building and PL objects. For the building modeling, the method of implicit geometric regularization is proposed to rectify noisy building outline vectors which are due to noisy data. A cost function for the regularization process is designed based on Minimum Description Length (MDL) theory, which favours smaller deviation between a model and observation as well as orthogonal and parallel properties between polylines. Next, a new approach, called Piecewise Model Growing (PMG), is proposed for 3D PL model reconstruction using a catenary curve model. It piece-wisely grows to capture all PL points of interest and thus produces a full PL 3D model. However, the proposed method is limited to the PL scene complexity, which causes PL modeling errors such as partial, under- and over-modeling errors. To correct the incompletion of PL models, the inner and across span analysis are carried out, which leads to replace erroneous PL segments by precise PL models. The inner span analysis is performed based on the MDL theory to correct under- and over-modeling errors. The across span analysis is subsequently carried out to correct partial-modeling errors by finding start and end positions of PLs which denotes Point Of Attachment (POA). As a result, this thesis addresses not only geometrically describing building and PL objects but also dealing with noisy data which causes the incompletion of models. In the practical aspects, the results of building and PL modeling should be essential to effectively analyze a PL scene and quickly alleviate the potentially hazardous scenarios jeopardizing the PL system

    Location prediction and trajectory optimization in multi-UAV application missions

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (a.k.a. drones) have a wide range of applications in e.g., aerial surveillance, mapping, imaging, monitoring, maritime operations, parcel delivery, and disaster response management. Their operations require reliable networking environments and location-based services in air-to-air links with cooperative drones, or air-to-ground links in concert with ground control stations. When equipped with high-resolution video cameras or sensors to gain environmental situation awareness through object detection/tracking, precise location predictions of individual or groups of drones at any instant possible is critical for continuous guidance. The location predictions then can be used in trajectory optimization for achieving efficient operations (i.e., through effective resource utilization in terms of energy or network bandwidth consumption) and safe operations (i.e., through avoidance of obstacles or sudden landing) within application missions. In this thesis, we explain a diverse set of techniques involved in drone location prediction, position and velocity estimation and trajectory optimization involving: (i) Kalman Filtering techniques, and (ii) Machine Learning models such as reinforcement learning and deep-reinforcement learning. These techniques facilitate the drones to follow intelligent paths and establish optimal trajectories while carrying out successful application missions under given resource and network constraints. We detail the techniques using two scenarios. The first scenario involves location prediction based intelligent packet transfer between drones in a disaster response scenario using the various Kalman Filtering techniques. The second scenario involves a learning-based trajectory optimization that uses various reinforcement learning models for maintaining high video resolution and effective network performance in a civil application scenario such as aerial monitoring of persons/objects. We conclude with a list of open challenges and future works for intelligent path planning of drones using location prediction and trajectory optimization techniques.Includes bibliographical references

    A system for improving the quality of real-time services on the internet

    Real-time Internet services are becoming more popular every day, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is arguably the most popular of these, despite the quality and reliability problems that are so characteristic of VOIP. This thesis proposes to apply a routing technique called Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing to VOIP and shows how this mitigates these problems to deliver a premium service that is more equal to traditional telephony than VOIP is currently.Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing uses the path diversity readily available in the Internet to route complete copies of the data to be communicated over multiple paths. This allows the effect of a failure on a path to be reduced, and possibly even masked completely, by the other paths. Significantly, rather than expecting changes of the Internet that will improve real-time service quality, this approach simply changes the manner in which real-time services use the Internet, leaving the Internet itself to stay the way it is.First, real VOIP traffic in a commercial call centre is measured (1) to establish a baseline of current quality characteristics against which the effects of Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing may be measured, and (2) as a source of realistic path characteristics. Simulations of various Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing systems that adopt the measured VOIP traffic characteristics then (1) show how this routing technique mitigates quality and reliability problems, and (2) quantify the quality deliverable with the VOIP traffic characteristics measured. For example, quantifying quality as a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) estimated from the measurements with the International Telecommunication Union’s E-model, slightly more than 1 in every 23 of the VOIP telephone calls measured in the call centre is likely to be perceived to be of a quality with which humans would be less than very satisfied. Simulations carried out for this thesis show that using just two paths adopting the same measurements, Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing may increase quality to reduce that proportion to slightly less than 1 in every 10 000 VOIP telephone calls

    Design and Evaluation of a Propulsion System for Small, Compact, Low-Speed Maneuvering Underwater Vehicles

    Underwater vehicles used to perform precision inspection and non-destructive evaluation in tightly constrained or delicate underwater environments must be small, have low-speed maneuverability and a smooth streamlined outer shape with no appendages. In this thesis, the design and analysis of a new propulsion system for such underwater vehicles is presented. It consists primarily of a syringe and a plunger driven by a linear actuator and uses different inflow and outflow nozzles to provide continuous propulsive force. A prototype of the proposed propulsion mechanism is built and tested. The practical utility and potential efficacy of the system is demonstrated and assessed via direct thrust measurement experiments and by use of an initial proof-of-concept test vehicle. Experiments are performed to enable the evaluation and modelling of the thrust output of the mechanism as well as the speed capability of a vehicle employing the propulsion system

    Investigation of end-stop motion constraint for a wave energy converter

    This work develops a design protocol for wave energy converter motion constraint, endstop systems. It applies the protocol by first using a numerical hydrodynamic wave energy converter (WEC) model to obtain preliminary design loads. Following a definitive set of selection criteria, comprehensive design of a system of load-bearing, helical springs is produced. A preliminary design is modeled with finite element analysis, and compared to analytical results. New dynamical collision models are conceived for impact damping systems based on spring-mass and anisotropic surface friction phenomena, by applying the concept observed on the snake ventral skin. Friction and compressive forces are correlated by classical mechanics. Finally, dimensional analysis is applied to yield design parameterization to directly compare the micro and macro influences within these distinct models, resulting in new knowledge on the physical relationships within contact interfaces and a dimensionless mechanical impedance formulationEsta dissertação desenvolve um protocolo para projetos de sistemas de restrição de movimentos associado a um limitador de fim de curso em conversores de energia das ondas. Inicialmente, é aplicado um modelo numérico hidrodinâmico para análise de cargas em um conversor de energia das ondas (WEC). Em seguida, é apresentado um conjunto definitivo de critérios de seleção, para análise de um sistema de molas helicoidais compressivas, para atenuar as forças provocadas pelos movimentos extremos da boia. Um projeto preliminar é modelado com análises de elementos finitos e comparado com os resultados analíticos. Novos tipos de modelos dinâmicos são idealizados para amortecimento do impacto, baseados em molas e no fenômeno de atrito superficial anisotrópico, aplicando o conceito observado na pele ventral de cobras. As forças de atrito e compressivas foram correlacionadas por meio de princípios de mecânica clássica. Finalmente, uma análise adimensional é utilizada para gerar a parametrização do projeto, para comparar diretamente as micro e macro influências entre esses modelos distintos, resultando em novos conhecimentos sobre as relações físicas nas interfaces de contato e uma formulação adimensional de impedância mecânica

    On-line health monitoring of passive electronic components using digitally controlled power converter

    This thesis presents System Identification based On-Line Health Monitoring to analyse the dynamic behaviour of the Switch-Mode Power Converter (SMPC), detect, and diagnose anomalies in passive electronic components. The anomaly detection in this research is determined by examining the change in passive component values due to degradation. Degradation, which is a long-term process, however, is characterised by inserting different component values in the power converter. The novel health-monitoring capability enables accurate detection of passive electronic components despite component variations and uncertainties and is valid for different topologies of the switch-mode power converter. The need for a novel on-line health-monitoring capability is driven by the need to improve unscheduled in-service, logistics, and engineering costs, including the requirement of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) for electronic systems and components. The detection and diagnosis of degradations and failures within power converters is of great importance for aircraft electronic manufacturers, such as Thales, where component failures result in equipment downtime and large maintenance costs. The fact that existing techniques, including built-in-self test, use of dedicated sensors, physics-of-failure, and data-driven based health-monitoring, have yet to deliver extensive application in IVHM, provides the motivation for this research ...     Integrated multiple sequence alignment

Bielefeld (Germany): Bielefeld University; 2005.The thesis presents enhancements for automated and manual multiple sequence alignment: existing alignment algorithms are made more easily accessible and new algorithms are designed for difficult cases. Firstly, we introduce the QAlign framework, a graphical user interface for multiple sequence alignment. It comprises several state-of-the-art algorithms and supports their parameters by convenient dialogs. An alignment viewer with guided editing functionality can also highlight or print regions of the alignment. Also phylogenetic features are provided, e.g., distance-based tree reconstruction methods, corrections for multiple substitutions and a tree viewer. The modular concept and the platform-independent implementation guarantee an easy extensibility. Further, we develop a constrained version of the divide-and-conquer alignment such that it can be restricted by anchors found earlier with local alignments. It can be shown that this method shares attributes of both, local and global aligners, in the quality of results as well as in the computation time. We further modify the local alignment step to work on bipartite (or even multipartite) sets for sequences where repeats overshadow valuable sequence information. In the end a technique is established that can accurately align sequences containing eventually repeated motifs. Finally, another algorithm is presented that allows to compare tandem repeat sequences by aligning them with respect to their possible repeat histories. We describe an evolutionary model including tandem duplications and excisions, and give an exact algorithm to compare two sequences under this model

    Energy aware optimization for low power radio technologies

    The explosive growth of IoT is pushing the market towards cheap, very low power devices with a strong focus on miniaturization, for applications such as in-body sensors, personal health monitoring and microrobots. Proposing procedures for energy efficiency in IoT is a difficult task, as it is a rapidly growing market comprised of many and very diverse product categories using technologies that are not stable, evolving at a high pace. The research in this field proposes solutions that go from physical layer optimization up to the network layer, and the sensor network designer has to select the techniques that are best for its application specific architecture and radio technology used. This work is focused on exploring new techniques for enhancing the energy efficiency and user experience of IoT networks. We divide the proposed techniques in frame and chip level optimization techniques, respectively. While the frame level techniques are meant to improve the performance of existing radio technologies, the chip level techniques aim at replacing them with crystal-free architectures. The identified frame level techniques are the use of preamble authentication and packet fragmentation, advisable for Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs), a technology that offers the lowest energy consumption per provided service, but is vulnerable in front of energy exhaustion attacks and does not perform well in dense networks. The use of authenticated preambles between the sensors and gateways becomes a defence mechanism against the battery draining intended by attackers. We show experimentally that this approach is able to reduce with 91% the effect of an exhaustion attack, increasing the device's lifetime from less than 0.24 years to 2.6 years. The experiments were conducted using Loadsensing sensor nodes, commercially used for critical infrastructure control and monitoring. Even if exemplified on LoRaWAN, the use of preamble authentication is extensible to any wireless protocol. The use of packet fragmentation despite the packet fits the frame, is shown to reduce the probability of collisions while the number of users in the duty-cycle restricted network increases. Using custom-made Matlab simulations, important goodput improvement was obtained with fragmentation, with higher impact in slower and denser networks. Using NS3 simulations, we showed that combining packet fragmentation with group NACK can increase the network reliability, while reducing the energy consumed for retransmissions, at the cost of adding small headers to each fragment. It is a strategy that proves to be effective in dense duty-cycle restricted networks only, where the headers overhead is negligible compared to the network traffic. As a chip level technique, we consider using radios for communication that do not use external frequency references such as crystal oscillators. This would enable having all sensor's elements on a single piece of silicon, rendering it even ten times more energy efficient due to the compactness of the chip. The immediate consequence is the loss of communication accuracy and ability to easily switch communication channels. In this sense, we propose a sequence of frequency synchronization algorithms and phases that have to be respected by a crystal-free device so that it can be able to join a network by finding the beacon channel, synthesize all communication channels and then maintain their accuracy against temperature change. The proposed algorithms need no additional network overhead, as they are using the existing network signaling. The evaluation is made in simulations and experimentally on a prototype implementation of an IEEE802.15.4 crystal-free radio. While in simulations we are able to change to another communication channel with very good frequency accuracy, the results obtained experimentally show an initial accuracy slightly above 40ppm, which will be later corrected by the chip to be below 40 ppm.El crecimiento significativo de la IoT está empujando al mercado hacia el desarrollo de dispositivos de bajo coste, de muy bajo consumo energético y con un fuerte enfoque en la miniaturización, para aplicaciones que requieran sensores corporales, monitoreo de salud personal y micro-robots. La investigación en el campo de la eficiencia energética en la IoT propone soluciones que van desde la optimización de la capa física hasta la capa de red. Este trabajo se centra en explorar nuevas técnicas para mejorar la eficiencia energética y la experiencia del usuario de las redes IoT. Dividimos las técnicas propuestas en técnicas de optimización de nivel de trama de red y chip, respectivamente. Si bien las técnicas de nivel de trama están destinadas a mejorar el rendimiento de las tecnologías de radio existentes, las técnicas de nivel de chip tienen como objetivo reemplazarlas por arquitecturas que no requieren de cristales. Las técnicas de nivel de trama desarrolladas en este trabajo son el uso de autenticación de preámbulos y fragmentación de paquetes, aconsejables para redes LPWAN, una tecnología que ofrece un menor consumo de energía por servicio prestado, pero es vulnerable frente a los ataques de agotamiento de energía y no escalan frente la densificación. El uso de preámbulos autenticados entre los sensores y las pasarelas de enlace se convierte en un mecanismo de defensa contra el agotamiento del batería previsto por los atacantes. Demostramos experimentalmente que este enfoque puede reducir con un 91% el efecto de un ataque de agotamiento, aumentando la vida útil del dispositivo de menos de 0.24 años a 2.6 años. Los experimentos se llevaron a cabo utilizando nodos sensores de detección de carga, utilizados comercialmente para el control y monitoreo de infrastructura crítica. Aunque la técnica se ejemplifica en el estándar LoRaWAN, el uso de autenticación de preámbulo es extensible a cualquier protocolo inalámbrico. En esta tesis se muestra también que el uso de la fragmentación de paquetes a pesar de que el paquete se ajuste a la trama, reduce la probabilidad de colisiones mientras aumenta el número de usuarios en una red con restricciones de ciclos de transmisión. Mediante el uso de simulaciones en Matlab, se obtiene una mejora importante en el rendimiento de la red con la fragmentación, con un mayor impacto en redes más lentas y densas. Usando simulaciones NS3, demostramos que combinar la fragmentación de paquetes con el NACK en grupo se puede aumentar la confiabilidad de la red, al tiempo que se reduce la energía consumida para las retransmisiones, a costa de agregar pequeños encabezados a cada fragmento. Como técnica de nivel de chip, consideramos el uso de radios para la comunicación que no usan referencias de frecuencia externas como los osciladores basados en un cristal. Esto permitiría tener todos los elementos del sensor en una sola pieza de silicio, lo que lo hace incluso diez veces más eficiente energéticamente debido a la integración del chip. La consecuencia inmediata, en el uso de osciladores digitales en vez de cristales, es la pérdida de precisión de la comunicación y la capacidad de cambiar fácilmente los canales de comunicación. En este sentido, proponemos una secuencia de algoritmos y fases de sincronización de frecuencia que deben ser respetados por un dispositivo sin cristales para que pueda unirse a una red al encontrar el canal de baliza, sintetizar todos los canales de comunicación y luego mantener su precisión contra el cambio de temperatura. Los algoritmos propuestos no necesitan una sobrecarga de red adicional, ya que están utilizando la señalización de red existente. La evaluación se realiza en simulaciones y experimentalmente en una implementación prototipo de una radio sin cristal IEEE802.15.4. Los resultados obtenidos experimentalmente muestran una precisión inicial ligeramente superior a 40 ppm, que luego será corregida por el chip para que sea inferior a 40 ppm.Postprint (published version

    A study of topologies and protocols for fiber optic local area network

    The emergence of new applications requiring high data traffic necessitates the development of high speed local area networks. Optical fiber is selected as the transmission medium due to its inherent advantages over other possible media and the dual optical bus architecture is shown to be the most suitable topology. Asynchronous access protocols, including token, random, hybrid random/token, and virtual token schemes, are developed and analyzed. Exact expressions for insertion delay and utilization at light and heavy load are derived, and intermediate load behavior is investigated by simulation. A new tokenless adaptive scheme whose control depends only on the detection of activity on the channel is shown to outperform round-robin schemes under uneven loads and multipacket traffic and to perform optimally at light load. An approximate solution to the queueing delay for an oscillating polling scheme under chaining is obtained and results are compared with simulation. Solutions to the problem of building systems with a large number of stations are presented, including maximization of the number of optical couplers, and the use of passive star/bus topologies, bridges and gateways
