Automated reliability assessment for spectroscopic redshift measurements
We present a new approach to automate the spectroscopic redshift reliability
assessment based on machine learning (ML) and characteristics of the redshift
probability density function (PDF).
We propose to rephrase the spectroscopic redshift estimation into a Bayesian
framework, in order to incorporate all sources of information and uncertainties
related to the redshift estimation process, and produce a redshift posterior
PDF that will be the starting-point for ML algorithms to provide an automated
assessment of a redshift reliability.
As a use case, public data from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey is exploited to
present and test this new methodology. We first tried to reproduce the existing
reliability flags using supervised classification to describe different types
of redshift PDFs, but due to the subjective definition of these flags, soon
opted for a new homogeneous partitioning of the data into distinct clusters via
unsupervised classification. After assessing the accuracy of the new clusters
via resubstitution and test predictions, unlabelled data from preliminary mock
simulations for the Euclid space mission are projected into this mapping to

Global analysis of coherence and population dynamics in 2D electronic spectroscopy
2D electronic spectroscopy is a widely exploited tool to study excited state dynamics. A high density of information is enclosed in 2D spectra. A crucial challenge is to objectively disentangle all the features of the third order optical signal. We propose a global analysis method based on the variable projection algorithm, which is able to reproduce simultaneously coherence and population dynamics of rephasing and non-rephasing contributions. Test measures at room temperature on a standard dye are used to validate the procedure and to discuss the advantages of the proposed methodology with respect to the currently employed analysis procedures
Visual 3-D SLAM from UAVs
The aim of the paper is to present, test and discuss the implementation of Visual SLAM techniques to images taken from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) outdoors, in partially structured environments. Every issue of the whole process is discussed in order to obtain more accurate localization and mapping from UAVs flights. Firstly, the issues related to the visual features of objects in the scene, their distance to the UAV, and the related image acquisition system and their calibration are evaluated for improving the whole process. Other important, considered issues are related to the image processing techniques, such as interest point detection, the matching procedure and the scaling factor. The whole system has been tested using the COLIBRI mini UAV in partially structured environments. The results that have been obtained for localization, tested against the GPS information of the flights, show that Visual SLAM delivers reliable localization and mapping that makes it suitable for some outdoors applications when flying UAVs
Massive MIMO for Next Generation Wireless Systems
Multi-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) offers big advantages over
conventional point-to-point MIMO: it works with cheap single-antenna terminals,
a rich scattering environment is not required, and resource allocation is
simplified because every active terminal utilizes all of the time-frequency
bins. However, multi-user MIMO, as originally envisioned with roughly equal
numbers of service-antennas and terminals and frequency division duplex
operation, is not a scalable technology. Massive MIMO (also known as
"Large-Scale Antenna Systems", "Very Large MIMO", "Hyper MIMO", "Full-Dimension
MIMO" & "ARGOS") makes a clean break with current practice through the use of a
large excess of service-antennas over active terminals and time division duplex
operation. Extra antennas help by focusing energy into ever-smaller regions of
space to bring huge improvements in throughput and radiated energy efficiency.
Other benefits of massive MIMO include the extensive use of inexpensive
low-power components, reduced latency, simplification of the media access
control (MAC) layer, and robustness to intentional jamming. The anticipated
throughput depend on the propagation environment providing asymptotically
orthogonal channels to the terminals, but so far experiments have not disclosed
any limitations in this regard. While massive MIMO renders many traditional
research problems irrelevant, it uncovers entirely new problems that urgently
need attention: the challenge of making many low-cost low-precision components
that work effectively together, acquisition and synchronization for
newly-joined terminals, the exploitation of extra degrees of freedom provided
by the excess of service-antennas, reducing internal power consumption to
achieve total energy efficiency reductions, and finding new deployment
scenarios. This paper presents an overview of the massive MIMO concept and

ALADDIN [1] is a multi-disciplinary project that is developing novel techniques, architectures, and mechanisms for multi-agent systems in uncertain and dynamic environments. The application focus of the project is disaster management. Research within a number of themes is being pursued and this is considering different aspects of the interaction between autonomous agents and the decentralised system architectures that support those interactions. The aim of the research is to contribute to building more robust multi-agent systems for future applications in disaster management and other similar domains
Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) system concept and technology definition study. Volume 2: Technology assessment and technology development plan
A study was conducted to define reasonable and representative LDR system concepts for the purpose of defining a technology development program aimed at providing the requisite technological capability necessary to start LDR development by the end of 1991. This volume presents thirteen technology assessments and technology development plans, as well as an overview and summary of the LDR concepts. Twenty-two proposed augmentation projects are described (selected from more than 30 candidates). The five LDR technology areas most in need of supplementary support are: cryogenic cooling; astronaut assembly of the optically precise LDR in space; active segmented primary mirror; dynamic structural control; and primary mirror contamination control.
