    Evaluation of Two Terminal Reliability of Fault-tolerant Multistage Interconnection Networks

    This paper iOntroduces a new method based on multi-decomposition for predicting the two terminal reliability of fault-tolerant multistage interconnection networks. The method is well supported by an efficient algorithm which runs polynomially. The method is well illustrated by taking a network consists of eight nodes and twelve links as an example. The proposed method is found to be simple, general and efficient and thus is as such applicable to all types of fault-tolerant multistage interconnection networks. The results show this method provides a greater accurate probability when applied on fault-tolerant multistage interconnection networks. Reliability of two important MINs are evaluated by using the proposed method

    Regularized Decomposition of High-Dimensional Multistage Stochastic Programs with Markov Uncertainty

    We develop a quadratic regularization approach for the solution of high-dimensional multistage stochastic optimization problems characterized by a potentially large number of time periods/stages (e.g. hundreds), a high-dimensional resource state variable, and a Markov information process. The resulting algorithms are shown to converge to an optimal policy after a finite number of iterations under mild technical assumptions. Computational experiments are conducted using the setting of optimizing energy storage over a large transmission grid, which motivates both the spatial and temporal dimensions of our problem. Our numerical results indicate that the proposed methods exhibit significantly faster convergence than their classical counterparts, with greater gains observed for higher-dimensional problems

    Testing Layered Interconnection Networks

    We present an approach for fault detection in layered interconnection networks (LINs). An LIN is a generalized multistage interconnection network commonly used in reconfigurable systems; the nets (links) are arranged in sets (referred to as layers) of different size. Switching elements (made of simple switches such as transmission-gate-like devices) are arranged in a cascade to connect pairs of layers. The switching elements of an LIN have the same number of switches, but the switching patterns may not be uniform. A comprehensive fault model for the nets and switches is assumed at physical and behavioral levels. Testing requires configuring the LIN multiple times. Using a graph approach, it is proven that the minimal set of configurations corresponds to the node disjoint path sets. The proposed approach is based on two novel results in the execution of the network flow algorithm to find node disjoint path sets, while retaining optimality in the number of configurations. These objectives are accomplished by finding a feasible flow such that the maximal degree can be iteratively decreased, while guaranteeing the existence of an appropriate circulation. Net adjacencies are also tested for possible bridge faults (shorts). To account for 100 percent fault coverage of bridge faults a postprocessing algorithm may be required; bounds on its complexity are provided. The execution complexity of the proposed approach (inclusive of test vector generation and post-processing) is O(N4WL), where N is the total number of nets, W is the number of switches per switching element, and L is the number of layers.     Probabilistic structural mechanics research for parallel processing computers

    Aerospace structures and spacecraft are a complex assemblage of structural components that are subjected to a variety of complex, cyclic, and transient loading conditions. Significant modeling uncertainties are present in these structures, in addition to the inherent randomness of material properties and loads. To properly account for these uncertainties in evaluating and assessing the reliability of these components and structures, probabilistic structural mechanics (PSM) procedures must be used. Much research has focused on basic theory development and the development of approximate analytic solution methods in random vibrations and structural reliability. Practical application of PSM methods was hampered by their computationally intense nature. Solution of PSM problems requires repeated analyses of structures that are often large, and exhibit nonlinear and/or dynamic response behavior. These methods are all inherently parallel and ideally suited to implementation on parallel processing computers. New hardware architectures and innovative control software and solution methodologies are needed to make solution of large scale PSM problems practical

    Analyzing Traffic and Multicast Switch Issues in an ATM Network.

    This dissertation attempts to solve two problems related to an ATM network. First, we consider packetized voice and video sources as the incoming traffic to an ATM multiplexer and propose modeling methods for both individual and aggregated traffic sources. These methods are, then, used to analyze performance parameters such as buffer occupancy, cell loss probability, and cell delay. Results, thus obtained, for different buffer sizes and number of voice and video sources are analyzed and compared with those generated from existing techniques. Second, we study the priority handling feature for time critical services in an ATM multicast switch. For this, we propose a non-blocking copy network and priority handling algorithms. We, then, analyze the copy network using an analytical method and simulation. The analysis utilizes both priority and non-priority cells for two different output reservation schemes. The performance parameters, based on cell delay, delay jitter, and cell loss probability, are studied for different buffer sizes and fan-outs under various input traffic loads. Our results show that the proposed copy network provides a better performance for the priority cells while the performance for the non-priority cells is slightly inferior in comparison with the scenario when the network does not consider priority handling. We also study the fault-tolerant behavior of the copy network, specially for the broadcast banyan network subsection, and present a routing scheme considering the non-blocking property under a specific pattern of connection assignments. A fault tolerant characteristic can be quantified using the full access probability. The computation of the full access probability for a general network is known to be NP-hard. We, therefore, provide a new bounding technique utilizing the concept of minimal cuts to compute full access probability of the copy network. Our study for the fault-tolerant multi-stage interconnection network having either an extra stage or chaining shows that the proposed technique provides tighter bounds as compared to those given by existing approaches. We also apply our bounding method to compute full access probability of the fault-tolerant copy network
