    Waveform Design for 5G and beyond Systems

    5G traffic has very diverse requirements with respect to data rate, delay, and reliability. The concept of using multiple OFDM numerologies adopted in the 5G NR standard will likely meet these multiple requirements to some extent. However, the traffic is radically accruing different characteristics and requirements when compared with the initial stage of 5G, which focused mainly on high-speed multimedia data applications. For instance, applications such as vehicular communications and robotics control require a highly reliable and ultra-low delay. In addition, various emerging M2M applications have sparse traffic with a small amount of data to be delivered. The state-of-the-art OFDM technique has some limitations when addressing the aforementioned requirements at the same time. Meanwhile, numerous waveform alternatives, such as FBMC, GFDM, and UFMC, have been explored. They also have their own pros and cons due to their intrinsic waveform properties. Hence, it is the opportune moment to come up with modification/variations/combinations to the aforementioned techniques or a new waveform design for 5G systems and beyond. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide the latest research and advances in the field of waveform design for 5G systems and beyond

    Semantic Segmentation for Real-World Applications

    En visión por computador, la comprensión de escenas tiene como objetivo extraer información útil de una escena a partir de datos de sensores. Por ejemplo, puede clasificar toda la imagen en una categoría particular o identificar elementos importantes dentro de ella. En este contexto general, la segmentación semántica proporciona una etiqueta semántica a cada elemento de los datos sin procesar, por ejemplo, a todos los píxeles de la imagen o, a todos los puntos de la nube de puntos. Esta información es esencial para muchas aplicaciones de visión por computador, como conducción, aplicaciones médicas o robóticas. Proporciona a los ordenadores una comprensión sobre el entorno que es necesaria para tomar decisiones autónomas.El estado del arte actual de la segmentación semántica está liderado por métodos de aprendizaje profundo supervisados. Sin embargo, las condiciones del mundo real presentan varias restricciones para la aplicación de estos modelos de segmentación semántica. Esta tesis aborda varios de estos desafíos: 1) la cantidad limitada de datos etiquetados disponibles para entrenar modelos de aprendizaje profundo, 2) las restricciones de tiempo y computación presentes en aplicaciones en tiempo real y/o en sistemas con poder computacional limitado, y 3) la capacidad de realizar una segmentación semántica cuando se trata de sensores distintos de la cámara RGB estándar.Las aportaciones principales en esta tesis son las siguientes:1. Un método nuevo para abordar el problema de los datos anotados limitados para entrenar modelos de segmentación semántica a partir de anotaciones dispersas. Los modelos de aprendizaje profundo totalmente supervisados lideran el estado del arte, pero mostramos cómo entrenarlos usando solo unos pocos píxeles etiquetados. Nuestro enfoque obtiene un rendimiento similar al de los modelos entrenados con imágenescompletamente etiquetadas. Demostramos la relevancia de esta técnica en escenarios de monitorización ambiental y en dominios más generales.2. También tratando con datos de entrenamiento limitados, proponemos un método nuevo para segmentación semántica semi-supervisada, es decir, cuando solo hay una pequeña cantidad de imágenes completamente etiquetadas y un gran conjunto de datos sin etiquetar. La principal novedad de nuestro método se basa en el aprendizaje por contraste. Demostramos cómo el aprendizaje por contraste se puede aplicar a la tarea de segmentación semántica y mostramos sus ventajas, especialmente cuando la disponibilidad de datos etiquetados es limitada logrando un nuevo estado del arte.3. Nuevos modelos de segmentación semántica de imágenes eficientes. Desarrollamos modelos de segmentación semántica que son eficientes tanto en tiempo de ejecución, requisitos de memoria y requisitos de cálculo. Algunos de nuestros modelos pueden ejecutarse en CPU a altas velocidades con alta precisión. Esto es muy importante para configuraciones y aplicaciones reales, ya que las GPU de gama alta nosiempre están disponibles.4. Nuevos métodos de segmentación semántica con sensores no RGB. Proponemos un método para la segmentación de nubes de puntos LiDAR que combina operaciones de aprendizaje eficientes tanto en 2D como en 3D. Logra un rendimiento de segmentación excepcional a velocidades realmente rápidas. También mostramos cómo mejorar la robustez de estos modelos al abordar el problema de sobreajuste y adaptaciónde dominio. Además, mostramos el primer trabajo de segmentación semántica con cámaras de eventos, haciendo frente a la falta de datos etiquetados.Estas contribuciones aportan avances significativos en el campo de la segmentación semántica para aplicaciones del mundo real. Para una mayor contribución a la comunidad cientfíica, hemos liberado la implementación de todas las soluciones propuestas.----------------------------------------In computer vision, scene understanding aims at extracting useful information of a scene from raw sensor data. For instance, it can classify the whole image into a particular category (i.e. kitchen or living room) or identify important elements within it (i.e., bottles, cups on a table or surfaces). In this general context, semantic segmentation provides a semantic label to every single element of the raw data, e.g., to all image pixels or to all point cloud points.This information is essential for many applications relying on computer vision, such as AR, driving, medical or robotic applications. It provides computers with understanding about the environment needed to make autonomous decisions, or detailed information to people interacting with the intelligent systems. The current state of the art for semantic segmentation is led by supervised deep learning methods.However, real-world scenarios and conditions introduce several challenges and restrictions for the application of these semantic segmentation models. This thesis tackles several of these challenges, namely, 1) the limited amount of labeled data available for training deep learning models, 2) the time and computation restrictions present in real time applications and/or in systems with limited computational power, such as a mobile phone or an IoT node, and 3) the ability to perform semantic segmentation when dealing with sensors other than the standard RGB camera.The general contributions presented in this thesis are following:A novel approach to address the problem of limited annotated data to train semantic segmentation models from sparse annotations. Fully supervised deep learning models are leading the state-of-the-art, but we show how to train them by only using a few sparsely labeled pixels in the training images. Our approach obtains similar performance than models trained with fully-labeled images. We demonstrate the relevance of this technique in environmental monitoring scenarios, where it is very common to have sparse image labels provided by human experts, as well as in more general domains. Also dealing with limited training data, we propose a novel method for semi-supervised semantic segmentation, i.e., when there is only a small number of fully labeled images and a large set of unlabeled data. We demonstrate how contrastive learning can be applied to the semantic segmentation task and show its advantages, especially when the availability of labeled data is limited. Our approach improves state-of-the-art results, showing the potential of contrastive learning in this task. Learning from unlabeled data opens great opportunities for real-world scenarios since it is an economical solution. Novel efficient image semantic segmentation models. We develop semantic segmentation models that are efficient both in execution time, memory requirements, and computation requirements. Some of our models able to run in CPU at high speed rates with high accuracy. This is very important for real set-ups and applications since high-end GPUs are not always available. Building models that consume fewer resources, memory and time, would increase the range of applications that can benefit from them. Novel methods for semantic segmentation with non-RGB sensors.We propose a novel method for LiDAR point cloud segmentation that combines efficient learning operations both in 2D and 3D. It surpasses state-of-the-art segmentation performance at really fast rates. We also show how to improve the robustness of these models tackling the overfitting and domain adaptation problem. Besides, we show the first work for semantic segmentation with event-based cameras, coping with the lack of labeled data. To increase the impact of this contributions and ease their application in real-world settings, we have made available an open-source implementation of all proposed solutions to the scientific community.<br /

    Innovation in manufacturing through digital technologies and applications: Thoughts and Reflections on Industry 4.0

    The rapid pace of developments in digital technologies offers many opportunities to increase the efficiency, flexibility and sophistication of manufacturing processes; including the potential for easier customisation, lower volumes and rapid changeover of products within the same manufacturing cell or line. A number of initiatives on this theme have been proposed around the world to support national industries under names such as Industry 4.0 (Industrie 4.0 in Germany, Made-in-China in China and Made Smarter in the UK). This book presents an overview of the state of art and upcoming developments in digital technologies pertaining to manufacturing. The starting point is an introduction on Industry 4.0 and its potential for enhancing the manufacturing process. Later on moving to the design of smart (that is digitally driven) business processes which are going to rely on sensing of all relevant parameters, gathering, storing and processing the data from these sensors, using computing power and intelligence at the most appropriate points in the digital workflow including application of edge computing and parallel processing. A key component of this workflow is the application of Artificial Intelligence and particularly techniques in Machine Learning to derive actionable information from this data; be it real-time automated responses such as actuating transducers or informing human operators to follow specified standard operating procedures or providing management data for operational and strategic planning. Further consideration also needs to be given to the properties and behaviours of particular machines that are controlled and materials that are transformed during the manufacturing process and this is sometimes referred to as Operational Technology (OT) as opposed to IT. The digital capture of these properties and behaviours can then be used to define so-called Cyber Physical Systems. Given the power of these digital technologies it is of paramount importance that they operate safely and are not vulnerable to malicious interference. Industry 4.0 brings unprecedented cybersecurity challenges to manufacturing and the overall industrial sector and the case is made here that new codes of practice are needed for the combined Information Technology and Operational Technology worlds, but with a framework that should be native to Industry 4.0. Current computing technologies are also able to go in other directions than supporting the digital ‘sense to action’ process described above. One of these is to use digital technologies to enhance the ability of the human operators who are still essential within the manufacturing process. One such technology, that has recently become accessible for widespread adoption, is Augmented Reality, providing operators with real-time additional information in situ with the machines that they interact with in their workspace in a hands-free mode. Finally, two linked chapters discuss the specific application of digital technologies to High Pressure Die Casting (HDPC) of Magnesium components. Optimizing the HPDC process is a key task for increasing productivity and reducing defective parts and the first chapter provides an overview of the HPDC process with attention to the most common defects and their sources. It does this by first looking at real-time process control mechanisms, understanding the various process variables and assessing their impact on the end product quality. This understanding drives the choice of sensing methods and the associated smart digital workflow to allow real-time control and mitigation of variation in the identified variables. Also, data from this workflow can be captured and used for the design of optimised dies and associated processes

    Smart Sustainable Mobility: Analytics and Algorithms for Next-Generation Mobility Systems

    To this date, mobility ecosystems around the world operate on an uncoordinated, inefficient and unsustainable basis. Yet, many technology-enabled solutions that have the potential to remedy these societal negatives are already at our disposal or just around the corner. Innovations in vehicle technology, IoT devices, mobile connectivity and AI-powered information systems are expected to bring about a mobility system that is connected, autonomous, shared and electric (CASE). In order to fully leverage the sustainability opportunities afforded by CASE, system-level coordination and management approaches are needed. This Thesis sets out an agenda for Information Systems research to shape the future of CASE mobility through data, analytics and algorithms (Chapter 1). Drawing on causal inference, (spatial) machine learning, mathematical programming and reinforcement learning, three concrete contributions toward this agenda are developed. Chapter 2 demonstrates the potential of pervasive and inexpensive sensor technology for policy analysis. Connected sensing devices have significantly reduced the cost and complexity of acquiring high-resolution, high-frequency data in the physical world. This affords researchers the opportunity to track temporal and spatial patterns of offline phenomena. Drawing on a case from the bikesharing sector, we demonstrate how geo-tagged IoT data streams can be used for tracing out highly localized causal effects of large-scale mobility policy interventions while offering actionable insights for policy makers and practitioners. Chapter 3 sets out a solution approach to a novel decision problem faced by operators of shared mobility fleets: allocating vehicle inventory optimally across a network when competition is present. The proposed three-stage model combines real-time data analytics, machine learning and mixed integer non-linear programming into an integrated framework. It provides operational decision support for fleet managers in contested shared mobility markets by generating optimal vehicle re-positioning schedules in real time. Chapter 4 proposes a method for leveraging data-driven digital twin (DT) frameworks for large multi-stage stochastic design problems. Such problem classes are notoriously difficult to solve with traditional stochastic optimization. Drawing on the case of Electric Vehicle Charging Hubs (EVCHs), we show how high-fidelity, data-driven DT simulation environments fused with reinforcement learning (DT-RL) can achieve (close-to) arbitrary scalability and high modeling flexibility. In benchmark experiments we demonstrate that DT-RL-derived designs result in superior cost and service-level performance under real-world operating conditions

    Dynamical systems applied to consciousness and brain rhythms in a neural network

    This thesis applies the great advances of modern dynamical systems theory (DST) to consciousness. Consciousness, or subjective experience, is faced here in two different ways: from the global dynamics of the human brain and from the integrated information theory (IIT), one of the currently most prestigious theories on consciousness. Before that, a study of a numerical simulation of a network of individual neurons justifies the use of the Lotka-Volterra model for neurons assemblies in both applications. All these proposals are developed following this scheme: • First, summarizing the structure, methods and goal of the thesis. • Second, introducing a general background in neuroscience and the global dynamics of the human brain to better understand those applications. • Third, conducting a study of a numerically simulated network of neurons. This network, which displays brain rhythms, can be employed, among other objectives, to justify the use of the Lotka-Volterra model for applications. • Fourth, summarizing concepts from the mathematical DST such as the global attractor and its informational structure, in addition to its particularization to a Lotka-Volterra system. • Fifth, introducing the new mathematical concepts of model transform and instantaneous parameters that allow the application of simple mathematical models such as Lotka-Volterra to complex empirical systems as the human brain. • Sixth, using the model transform, and specifically the Lotka-Volterra transform, to calculate global attractors and informational structures in global dynamics of the human brain. • Seventh, knowing the probably most prestigious theory on consciousness, the IIT developed by G. Tononi. • Eighth, using informational structures to develop a continuous version of IIT. And ninth, establishing some final conclusions and commenting on new open questions from this work. These nine points of this scheme correspond to the nine chapters of this thesis

    Collision Avoidance on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using Deep Neural Networks

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), although hardly a new technology, have recently gained a prominent role in many industries, being widely used not only among enthusiastic consumers but also in high demanding professional situations, and will have a massive societal impact over the coming years. However, the operation of UAVs is full of serious safety risks, such as collisions with dynamic obstacles (birds, other UAVs, or randomly thrown objects). These collision scenarios are complex to analyze in real-time, sometimes being computationally impossible to solve with existing State of the Art (SoA) algorithms, making the use of UAVs an operational hazard and therefore significantly reducing their commercial applicability in urban environments. In this work, a conceptual framework for both stand-alone and swarm (networked) UAVs is introduced, focusing on the architectural requirements of the collision avoidance subsystem to achieve acceptable levels of safety and reliability. First, the SoA principles for collision avoidance against stationary objects are reviewed. Afterward, a novel image processing approach that uses deep learning and optical flow is presented. This approach is capable of detecting and generating escape trajectories against potential collisions with dynamic objects. Finally, novel models and algorithms combinations were tested, providing a new approach for the collision avoidance of UAVs using Deep Neural Networks. The feasibility of the proposed approach was demonstrated through experimental tests using a UAV, created from scratch using the framework developed.Os veículos aéreos não tripulados (VANTs), embora dificilmente considerados uma nova tecnologia, ganharam recentemente um papel de destaque em muitas indústrias, sendo amplamente utilizados não apenas por amadores, mas também em situações profissionais de alta exigência, sendo expectável um impacto social massivo nos próximos anos. No entanto, a operação de VANTs está repleta de sérios riscos de segurança, como colisões com obstáculos dinâmicos (pássaros, outros VANTs ou objetos arremessados). Estes cenários de colisão são complexos para analisar em tempo real, às vezes sendo computacionalmente impossível de resolver com os algoritmos existentes, tornando o uso de VANTs um risco operacional e, portanto, reduzindo significativamente a sua aplicabilidade comercial em ambientes citadinos. Neste trabalho, uma arquitectura conceptual para VANTs autônomos e em rede é apresentada, com foco nos requisitos arquitetônicos do subsistema de prevenção de colisão para atingir níveis aceitáveis de segurança e confiabilidade. Os estudos presentes na literatura para prevenção de colisão contra objectos estacionários são revistos e uma nova abordagem é descrita. Esta tecnica usa técnicas de aprendizagem profunda e processamento de imagem, para realizar a prevenção de colisões em tempo real com objetos móveis. Por fim, novos modelos e combinações de algoritmos são propostos, fornecendo uma nova abordagem para evitar colisões de VANTs usando Redes Neurais Profundas.
