    Textual Query Based Image Retrieval

    As digital cameras becoming popular and mobile phones are increased very fast so that consumers photos are increased. So that retrieving the appropriate image depending on content or text based image retrieval techniques has become very vast. Content-based image retrieval, a technique which uses visual contents to search images from large scale image databases according to users interests, has been an active and fast advancing research area semantic gap between the low-level visual features and the high-level semantic concepts. Real-time textual query-based personal photo retrieval system by leveraging millions of Web images and their associated rich textual descriptions. Then user provides a textual query. Our system generates the inverted file to automatically find the positive Web images that are related to the textual query as well as the negative Web images that are irrelevant to the textual query. For that purpose we use k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), Decision stumps, and linear SVM, to rank personal photos. For improvement of the photo retrieval performance, we have used two relevance feedback methods via cross-domain learning, which effectively utilize both the Web images and personal images.     A relevance-focused search application for personalised ranking model

    The assumption that users’ profiles can be exploited by employing their implicit feedback for query expansion through a conceptual search to index documents has been proven in previous research. Several successful approaches leading to an improvement in the accuracy of personalised search results have been proposed. This paper extends existing approaches and combines the keyword-based and semantic-based features in order to provide further evidence of relevance-focused search application for Personalised Ranking Model (PRM). A description of the hybridisation of these approaches is provided and various issues arising in the context of computing the similarity between users’ profiles are discussed. As compared to any traditional search system, the superiority of our approach lies in pushing significantly relevant documents to the top of the ranked lists. The results were empirically confirmed through human subjects who conducted several real-life Web searches

    Enhanced web log based recommendation by personalized retrieval

Thus the problem of enabling users to quickly and accurately find information has become an urgent issue. As one of the basic ways to solve this problem, personalized information services have been focusing on fulfilling the personalized information requirements of different users based on their actual demands, preference characteristics, behaviour patterns, etc. This thesis focuses on enhancing web log based recommendation by personalized retrieval, and its main works and innovations include: • For personalized retrieval, the thesis proposes two models to improve user experience and optimize search performance. The first is a query suggestion model based on query semantics and click-through data. This model calculates the subject relevance between queries, and then combines the semantic information and the relevance of the query-click matrix model as this can effectively eliminate the ambiguity and input errors of reminder queries. The second is a collaborative filtering retrieval model based on local and global features. By the integration of the local and global characteristics of the accessed information, this model overcomes the limitations of a single feature, and increases the degree of application of the retrieval model. • For recommendation by personalized retrieval, we propose two recommendation models based on the web log. The first is based on the user’s atomic retrieval transaction sequence and the browse characteristics. This model decomposes search transactions, and calculates the user’s degree of interest on the search term, which allows users to query information more clearly. Further, it incorporates the user feedback on the search results evaluation value, which overcomes the shortcomings of the model based on content filtering. The second model is based on user interests association findings, which can be used to: find the relationship between resources accessed by users, extract the associations of user interests, and address the problem of user interests isolation

    The use of implicit evidence for relevance feedback in web retrieval

    In this paper we report on the application of two contrasting types of relevance feedback for web retrieval. We compare two systems; one using explicit relevance feedback (where searchers explicitly have to mark documents relevant) and one using implicit relevance feedback (where the system endeavours to estimate relevance by mining the searcher's interaction). The feedback is used to update the display according to the user's interaction. Our research focuses on the degree to which implicit evidence of document relevance can be substituted for explicit evidence. We examine the two variations in terms of both user opinion and search effectiveness

    Personalized content retrieval in context using ontological knowledge

    Personalized content retrieval aims at improving the retrieval process by taking into account the particular interests of individual users. However, not all user preferences are relevant in all situations. It is well known that human preferences are complex, multiple, heterogeneous, changing, even contradictory, and should be understood in context with the user goals and tasks at hand. In this paper, we propose a method to build a dynamic representation of the semantic context of ongoing retrieval tasks, which is used to activate different subsets of user interests at runtime, in a way that out-of-context preferences are discarded. Our approach is based on an ontology-driven representation of the domain of discourse, providing enriched descriptions of the semantics involved in retrieval actions and preferences, and enabling the definition of effective means to relate preferences and context

    Semantic user profiling techniques for personalised multimedia recommendation

    Due to the explosion of news materials available through broadcast and other channels, there is an increasing need for personalised news video retrieval. In this work, we introduce a semantic-based user modelling technique to capture users’ evolving information needs. Our approach exploits implicit user interaction to capture long-term user interests in a profile. The organised interests are used to retrieve and recommend news stories to the users. In this paper, we exploit the Linked Open Data Cloud to identify similar news stories that match the users’ interest. We evaluate various recommendation parameters by introducing a simulation-based evaluation scheme

    Unsupervised Visual and Textual Information Fusion in Multimedia Retrieval - A Graph-based Point of View

    Multimedia collections are more than ever growing in size and diversity. Effective multimedia retrieval systems are thus critical to access these datasets from the end-user perspective and in a scalable way. We are interested in repositories of image/text multimedia objects and we study multimodal information fusion techniques in the context of content based multimedia information retrieval. We focus on graph based methods which have proven to provide state-of-the-art performances. We particularly examine two of such methods : cross-media similarities and random walk based scores. From a theoretical viewpoint, we propose a unifying graph based framework which encompasses the two aforementioned approaches. Our proposal allows us to highlight the core features one should consider when using a graph based technique for the combination of visual and textual information. We compare cross-media and random walk based results using three different real-world datasets.     Finding co-solvers on Twitter, with a little help from Linked Data

    In this paper we propose a method for suggesting potential collaborators for solving innovation challenges online, based on their competence, similarity of interests and social proximity with the user. We rely on Linked Data to derive a measure of semantic relatedness that we use to enrich both user profiles and innovation problems with additional relevant topics, thereby improving the performance of co-solver recommendation. We evaluate this approach against state of the art methods for query enrichment based on the distribution of topics in user profiles, and demonstrate its usefulness in recommending collaborators that are both complementary in competence and compatible with the user. Our experiments are grounded using data from the social networking service Twitter.com

    Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

    Studying Interaction Methodologies in Video Retrieval

    So far, several approaches have been studied to bridge the problem of the Semantic Gap, the bottleneck in image and video retrieval. However, no approach is successful enough to increase retrieval performances significantly. One reason is the lack of understanding the user's interest, a major condition towards adapting results to a user. This is partly due to the lack of appropriate interfaces and the missing knowledge of how to interpret user's actions with these interfaces. In this paper, we propose to study the importance of various implicit indicators of relevance. Furthermore, we propose to investigate how this implicit feedback can be combined with static user profiles towards an adaptive video retrieval model
