    The State of the Art of Information Integration in Space Applications

    This paper aims to present a comprehensive survey on information integration (II) in space informatics. With an ever-increasing scale and dynamics of complex space systems, II has become essential in dealing with the complexity, changes, dynamics, and uncertainties of space systems. The applications of space II (SII) require addressing some distinctive functional requirements (FRs) of heterogeneity, networking, communication, security, latency, and resilience; while limited works are available to examine recent advances of SII thoroughly. This survey helps to gain the understanding of the state of the art of SII in sense that (1) technical drivers for SII are discussed and classified; (2) existing works in space system development are analyzed in terms of their contributions to space economy, divisions, activities, and missions; (3) enabling space information technologies are explored at aspects of sensing, communication, networking, data analysis, and system integration; (4) the importance of first-time right (FTR) for implementation of a space system is emphasized, the limitations of digital twin (DT-I) as technological enablers are discussed, and a concept digital-triad (DT-II) is introduced as an information platform to overcome these limitations with a list of fundamental design principles; (5) the research challenges and opportunities are discussed to promote SII and advance space informatics in future

    Design and implementation of resilient attitude estimation algorithms for aerospace applications

    Satellite attitude estimation is a critical component of satellite attitude determination and control systems, relying on highly accurate sensors such as IMUs, star trackers, and sun sensors. However, the complex space environment can cause sensor performance degradation or even failure. To address this issue, FDIR systems are necessary. This thesis presents a novel approach to satellite attitude estimation that utilizes an InertialNavigation System (INS) to achieve high accuracy with the low computational load. The algorithm is based on a two-layer Kalman filter, which incorporates the quaternion estimator(QUEST) algorithm, FQA, Linear interpolation (LERP)algorithms, and KF. Moreover, the thesis proposes an FDIR system for the INS that can detect and isolate faults and recover the system safely. This system includes two-layer fault detection with isolation and two-layered recovery, which utilizes an Adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter (AUKF), QUEST algorithm, residual generators, Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural networks, and an adaptive complementary filter (ACF). These two fault detection layers aim to isolate and identify faults while decreasing the rate of false alarms. An FPGA-based FDIR system is also designed and implemented to reduce latency while maintaining normal resource consumption in this thesis. Finally, a Fault Tolerance Federated Kalman Filter (FTFKF) is proposed to fuse the output from INS and the CNS to achieve high precision and robust attitude estimation.The findings of this study provide a solid foundation for the development of FDIR systems for various applications such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, particularly for satellite attitude estimation. The proposed INS-based approach with the FDIR system has demonstrated high accuracy, fault tolerance, and low computational load, making it a promising solution for satellite attitude estimation in harsh space environment

    A survey on deep learning-based monocular spacecraft pose estimation: Current state, limitations and prospects

    peer reviewedEstimating the pose of an uncooperative spacecraft is an important computer vision problem for enabling the deployment of automatic vision-based systems in orbit, with applications ranging from on-orbit servicing to space debris removal. Following the general trend in computer vision, more and more works have been focusing on leveraging Deep Learning (DL) methods to address this problem. However and despite promising research-stage results, major challenges preventing the use of such methods in real-life missions still stand in the way. In particular, the deployment of such computation-intensive algorithms is still under-investigated, while the performance drop when training on synthetic and testing on real images remains to mitigate. The primary goal of this survey is to describe the current DL-based methods for spacecraft pose estimation in a comprehensive manner. The secondary goal is to help define the limitations towards the effective deployment of DL-based spacecraft pose estimation solutions for reliable autonomous vision-based applications. To this end, the survey first summarises the existing algorithms according to two approaches: hybrid modular pipelines and direct end-to-end regression methods. A comparison of algorithms is presented not only in terms of pose accuracy but also with a focus on network architectures and models' sizes keeping potential deployment in mind. Then, current monocular spacecraft pose estimation datasets used to train and test these methods are discussed. The data generation methods: simulators and testbeds, the domain gap and the performance drop between synthetically generated and lab/space collected images and the potential solutions are also discussed. Finally, the paper presents open research questions and future directions in the field, drawing parallels with other computer vision applications

    Angles-Only Navigation for Autonomous Orbital Rendezvous

    The proposed thesis of this dissertation has both a practical element and theoretical component which aim to answer key questions related to the use of angles-only navigation for autonomous orbital rendezvous. The first and fundamental principle to this work argues that an angles-only navigation filter can determine the relative position and orientation (pose) between two spacecraft to perform the necessary maneuvers and close proximity operations for autonomous orbital rendezvous. Second, the implementation of angles-only navigation for on-orbit applications is looked upon with skeptical eyes because of its perceived limitation of determining the relative range between two vehicles. This assumed, yet little understood subtlety can be formally characterized with a closed-form analytical observability criteria which specifies the necessary and sufficient conditions for determining the relative position and velocity with only angular measurements. With a mathematical expression of the observability criteria, it can be used to 1) identify the orbital rendezvous trajectories and maneuvers that ensure the relative position and velocity are observable for angles-only navigation, 2) quantify the degree or level of observability and 3) compute optimal maneuvers that maximize observability. In summary, the objective of this dissertation is to provide both a practical and theoretical foundation for the advancement of autonomous orbital rendezvous through the use of angles-only navigation
